Disk Library

BACKGROUND

This program will track the files that are on your floppy
disks or on your hard drive. The program will read every
normal file on the disk, regardless of which directory it is
in and add it to the library list. When you enter a disk
that is already in the library, the program will delete all
the old entries and enter new ones.

OPERATION

Start Up - The "lib.exe" program should be copied to its own
floppy or to its own directory on a hard disk. The program
must be started with that disk, or directory as the current
directory. The program will look for a file called
"file.dat" which contains the library. If none found, will
create one.

The program operates with the entire library in core. (Have
about 1200 entries in my library and takes up about 25,000
bytes.) Will immediately read it in. Notice how it gives you
status.

To use the library, you must give each disk a unique
identifier of not more than 3 characters. The program will
prompt you to enter the disk identifier and to choose the
entry drive. You may use the same drive you used to start
the program. When you are finished the program will prompt
you to enter the start up disk again.

DISPLAYS

The Library program will display your data in either file
sequence or disk sequence. In either case, it will prompt
you for the entry point.

KNOWN DEFICIENCIES

If you try to enter the displays at a non existent point, the
pointer will go to end of file and give you a blank window.
Cursor down or up will take you to the beginning or end of
file.

Some windows need to be lined up better.

Should have a sort of file names by extension.

Supports only a CGA or EGA.

Was developed on an AT clone. Sort times are not
significant. When I ran it on an 8088, decided that I should
have only sorted at the end of a disk entry session. Not
*real* slow, but noticable when large number of files in
library.

Gives user no choice of screen colors.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
