COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
1.0 INTRODUCTION
COMPUTER DARKROOM is a versatile program that has been
created to be of use to amateur and professional
photographers. If you are involved in the photographic
printing process you will find this program very useful. The
use of this program will provide to the operator the ability
to make modifications to many parameters and obtain a print
of the same quality in less time using less materials. We
believe that the cost savings in materials and time is of
great benefit to the hobbiest or professional.
The primary purpose of this program is to provide
exposure times for black and white, color negative and color
slide printing based on changes in several printing
parameters. The exposure times are calculated for several of
the normal enlarger aperture settings and are displayed
continually for the convenience of the operator. These
exposure times are calculated based on each of the printing
types. Characteristics such as reciprocity failure are
included as part of the calculations.
The general procedure for the use of the COMPUTER
DARKROOM program is to create a print in the usual manner.
You will still use a test print to obtain the correct
exposure time based on printing filters, magnification, paper
grade and exposure factor, when using color negative
materials. When an acceptable print is obtained the
information to create this print is entered into the program
in the specific fields provided. This information can then be
printed and stored for future reference. When changes are
required such as magnification, exposure factor, printing
filters, paper type or contrast grade the parameters that
change can then be entered and the program will calculate the
exposure times for each aperture to obtain the same exposure
that produced the test print.
2.0 INSTALLATION
This section is provided to help the user of COMPUTER
DARKROOM install the programs and related files on their
computer in the least amount of time with the least amount of
problems. You should follow the procedures outlined below
unless you have a good understanding of the Disk Operating
System installed in your computer.
1
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
COMPUTER DARKROOM programs and files require more
storage space then are provided on a single low density
floppy diskette. Therefore your distribution may have been in
the form of two low density disketts or one high density
diskette.
If you would like the program to install automatically
you may run the installation program provided. This automatic
installation will install COMPUTER DARKROOM on your hard
drive and create the appropriate directories. Refer to
section 2.2.2 for further instructions.
We believe that it would be best to install all the
COMPUTER DARKROOM programs and files in a single subdirectory
on your hard drive. We call this main subdirectory CDR2. The
data files produced by the program should be stored in three
separate subdirectories under this CDR2 subdirectory. If this
information is confusing to you please refer to the directory
structure explanation in your DOS Manual. As you gain
familiarity with the program and how it saves photographic
printing records you may want to create separate
subdirectories for separate categories of negatives or
slides.
The procedure below will describe how to set up your
system to obtain the directory structure shown here.
C:\

2.2 Procedure
Three procedures are described in this section. The
first section contains the procedure for creating a diskette
for running COMPUTER DARKROOM on a floppy disk only system.
The second section describes the procedure for setting up
your hard disk for running the program from a hard disk.
2.2.1 Floppy Diskette
COMPUTER DARKROOM is to large to fit on a low density
diskette. Therefor if you only have a 360K drive the program
must be installed on your hard drive. To install COMPUTER
DARKROOM on a high density floppy disk system simply copy all
the files that reside on the distribution diskette(s) to a
formatted high density diskette. Save the original
diskette(s) as a back-up and run the program from the new
diskette. You may create the subdirectories BWPRINT, CNPRINT
and CSPRINT on the floppy diskette using the DOS Make
Directory command. The creation of the data subdirectories is
not required since the programs will save the data to any
subdirectory that you specify.
The program can now be started by placing the floppy
diskette that you just made into your floppy drive and typing
"CDR2". The main menu program will appear and you may select
the additional modules from this menu.
2.2.2 Hard Disk
The best way to install COMPUTER DARKROOM is to use the
installation program provided on your distribution
diskette(s). Just insert the first or only diskette and type
"INSTALL". Follow the instruction given by the installation
program. The installation program will create the proper
directories and copy all the programs and files to these
directories. If you prefer to install the program yourself
you may follow the procedures provided below.
3
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
* To prepare your hard disk for COMPUTER DARKROOM create
a subdirectory under the root directory called CDR2 using the
DOS Make Directory command "MD CDR2".
* Enter into this subdirectory by using the DOS Change
Directory command "CD CDR2".
* Place the distribution diskette(s) into the floppy
drive and copy all the programs and files contained on the
distribution diskette(s) into this subdirectory using the DOS
COPY Command "COPY A:\*.*". If you are using the B: drive to
transfer the programs and files onto the hard disk the
command to copy would be "COPY b:\*.*". If you received two
diskettes you must perform this procedure twice, once for
each diskette.
* Once all the files contained on the distribution
diskette(s) are located in the CDR2 subdirectory, create
three more subdirectories under the CDR2 subdirectory called
BWPRINT, CNPRINT and CSPRINT using the DOS Make Directory
command "MD BWPRINT", "MD CNPRINT" and "MD CSPRINT" each of
these command are separate.
Your hard disk is now ready. You may run the program by
going into the CDR2 subdirectory and entering the command
CDR2. The main menu will be displayed and from there you may
proceed to the additional modules.
2.3 Purpose of Files
Listed below are the programs and files that are
contained on the distribution diskette(s) and their purpose.

COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
3.0 QUICK START
Once COMPUTER DARKROOM is installed you may want to get
familiar with the program before continuing on to the
detailed sections of this manual. This section will help you
get started quickly. The programs have been written so that
no experience should be necessary to utilize most of the
features.
3.1 Starting and Selecting a Module
To start COMPUTER DARKROOM, go to the subdirectory that
contains the programs and files. If you followed the
instructions in the installation section this will be
subdirectory CDR2. Once you are there just type in the
command "CDR2" and the Main Module Selection Menu will be
displayed as will as the status of the mouse. A module is
selected by moving the highlighted bar with the cursor keys
or mouse to the module that you want to run and pressing
[ENTER] or the left mouse button.
Once you are in one of the print modules try
experimenting with the entries. You will become familiar with
the operation of the program very quickly. Try entering
values by selecting the fields. This is done by watching the
left bar as you press the cursor keys or move the mouse up
and down. Select a field entry by pressing the [ENTER] key or
left mouse button. You will be asked to enter a value or
select from a group of options.
Remember that help is only a [F1] press away. Help can
also be requested by pressing the left and right mouse
buttons at the same time.
3.2 Entering Information
Values for your print may be entered by selecting an
entry with the moving bar located to the left of the screen.
When the selection symbol is located next to the item
pressing the [ENTER] key or left mouse button will notify the
program to display a data entry window. All entries are
accomplished this way. All values are set by the data entry
method or item selection method.
6
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
If a data entry is called for, the value may be entered
by moving the cursor with the cursor keys or mouse andtyping
in the value. When the value is correct, pressing the [ENTER]
key or the left mouse button will notify the program that the
entry is completed.
If an item selection is called for, a highlighted bar is
moved by the cursor keys or mouse until the it is over the
desired item. Pressing the [ENTER] key will notify the
program that the highlighted value is requested.
In either case the entry window will be removed and the
new value will be displayed in the module main screen at the
location defined for that item.
At the completion of each entry, if the calculation of
the exposure time is required, it will be accomplished and
the new results will be displayed at the location for the
exposure time in the module main screen and in the multiple
lens opening window for each f-stop.
3.3 Function Keys
Processes within the program can be started by using the
function keys at any time they are displayed. Each function
key is assigned a task. Up to six keys may be displayed at
one time. The task for each function key is started by
pressing the function key for that task. Only function keys
that are displayed at each place in the program are available
at that time.
REMEMBER: [F1] FOR HELP
4.0 GENERAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This section contains the information that will be
required through out all modules. The information contained
here is universal to the entire program and will apply
regardless of the module selected.
4.1 Theory of Operation
The operation and use of COMPUTER DARKROOM is contained
in this section and is described as follows.
7
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
Once a module is selected from the Main Module Selection
Menu information is entered about the test print that has
been completed. Once enough information is entered the
program will calculate and display the exposure times for
each of the lens openings. The only information that is
required for this calculation is the exposure time and lens
opening that was used to make the test print. At this time
the photographer may use any of the lens opening exposure
time combinations to achieve the same quality as the test
print.
Although this is useful, the true abilities of the
program are available when the additional information is
entered such as negative size, projection size, paper type
for black and white or filter pack for color printing. No
calculated exposure times are changed on the initial entries
but later changes to any of these parameters will force the
program to calculate the exposure times to obtain the exact
exposure as the original test print.
4.2 Making Selections
All selections are made by using the cursor keys or
mouse to move a highlighted bar or a selection marker and
pressing [ENTER] or the left mouse button.
All menu selections are chosen by moving a highlighted
bar and all value entry selections are made by moving the
selection marker. When a highlighted bar is used a selection
window is displayed in the center of the screen with the
selections that are available displayed in this window. Each
of the three main modules has a main screen where value
entries are selected with the selection marker.
4.3 Entering Information
All entries are made in the same manner regardless of
the module or field that you have selected. When a value
entry is required and selected with the selection marker as
described in the preceding paragraphs an entry window is
displayed in the center of the screen with the previous value
for that entry displayed. To change the value you will enter
the new value and conclude that entry.
8
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
Some entry windows display only one value to modify
while others display more. All value entries such as exposure
time and negative size will display only one value. The entry
procedure for these cases will be terminated by entering the
new value then pressing [ENTER] or the left mouse button.
Entry windows that require multiple entries such as record
save and read operations will terminate when the [ENTER] key
or left mouse button is pressed after the last entry. Fields
within the multiple entry windows are highlighted to show
which field is being modified. You may move between fields by
using the cursor keys or the mouse. The program will warn you
if you try to conclude an entry process without completing
all the required entries.
In either the single entry or multiple entry windows if
you decide that you do not want to change the values that
were previously entered you may cancel the entry without
changing the value by pressing the [F2] key or the right
mouse button.
4.4 Function Keys
To help you select additional operations within the
program functions key selections are provided. Up to six
additional functions are available. The availability of each
of these operations will change during program operation.
When an operation is available it's function key will be
displayed at that time. Any time a function key is displayed
that operation can be performed.
4.4.1 [F1] HELP
The help function is available at any time during
program operation. This context sensitive help system will
provide you with information about where you are and where
you can go from that point. This is a very useful feature and
should be used until you become familiar with the operation
of the program.
Once the HELP function is started by pressing the [F1]
key or both mouse buttons a help window will appear in the
upper left portion of the screen. The only way to continue
the program is to press the [F1] key or both mouse buttons
again to eliminate the help window. The program will return
to the same place it was when the help was first requested.
9
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
Figure 2 of Appendix A shows an example of a help
screen.
4.4.2 [F2] RETURN
The RETURN operation is started by pressing the [F2]
key or right mouse button. This function allows the ability
to return to the previous operation with out entering any
changes during a value entry operation. Any changes made in a
value entry window will be ignored when this key is pressed.
The RETURN operation also allows the operator to return
to the Main Module Menu from one of the print modules. When
the [F2] key or the right mouse button is pressed for this
purpose the program will assume that all operations within
the active module are complete and all entered values will be
lost. If you wish to keep the information that was entered
during a print module operation the SAVE operation must be
requested before going back to the Main Module Menu.
4.4.3 [F3] PRINT
The PRINT operation is started by pressing the [F3]
function key. This operation will format the information that
is displayed on the screen and send it to the printer for
hard copy. This function allows you to keep a record in a
hard copy form for any print specifications that you may
enter.
If the printer is not ready to receive the information
when you select this function the program will display an
error message and you will be given an opportunity to correct
the problem and try again.
4.4.4 [F4] BLANK
This function is used when your computer is located in
your darkroom. By pressing the [F4] key the program will
totally blank the screen so that there will not be a
possibility of the glow from the screen effecting the
printing paper.
The screen can be returned to it's original display by
pressing any key.
10
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
4.4.5 [F5] READ
The READ operation allows you to retrieve a print
specification that was previously stored to the disk drive.
The READ operations is started by pressing the [F5] key.
When this function is started the program will ask you
for three items via an entry window. The first entry is
optional and is the path to the file that contains the
record. If no entry is made in the field the active directory
will be chosen.
If you have followed the installation instructions in
this manual then you should save the black and white print
records in subdirectory "C:\BWPRINT", color negative print
records in "C:\CNPRINT" and color slide print records in
"C:\CSPRINT". if you chose not to use these subdirectories
and do not enter a path the active directory will be
"C:\CDR2".
The second entry will be the File Name were the record
was stored. This entry is required and can be up to eight
characters long. An extension will be appended to the end of
the file name that you enter. The extension for black and
white print records is .BWN, for color negative print records
is .CON and for color slide print records is .COS.
The last field is labeled Negative or Slide I.D. and is
required. This information is needed for the program to find
the specific record that you are requesting since the number
of records can be stored in a single disk file is limited to
the size of the disk space.
If you do not have the two required fields completed the
program will display an error condition and you will have the
option to enter the additional information or return to the
module main screen.
Figure 8 of Appendix A shows an example of the READ
record entry window.
4.4.6 [F6] SAVE
The SAVE operation allows you to store a print

is .CON and for color slide print records is .COS.
The program will use the I.D. field that you entered in
the module main screen for the name of the record. If there
was no entry made in this field before the SAVE function was
selected an error condition will be displayed and you will be
required to go back to the module main screen to enter this
information before you will be allowed to save the record.
If you do not have the required file name completed the
program will display an error condition and you will have the
option to enter the additional information or return to the
module main screen.
Once the required information is available the program
will check if this record is already saved in the selected
file. If no duplicate record is located the record will be
stored. If a duplicate record is located you will be given
the option to overwrite the existing record or return to the
module main screen without storing the record.
You should devise an I.D. and file naming system for
your records before you use this function. Section 6 of this
manual will help you devise a system so that you will always
know where all your records are located. This is very
important since it is quite easy to lose track of where you
have stored a specific record.
Figure 9 of Appendix A shows an example of the SAVE
record entry window.

4.5 Using the Mouse
Mouse . is provided by COMPUTER DARKROOM. The
program does not require that a mouse be present.
When the program is first entered and each time the Main
Module Selection Menu is displayed the status of the mouse
will be displayed as well. The program checks to see if a
mouse driver is installed before displaying the mouse status.
The operation of the mouse simply takes the place of the
cursor keys, [ENTER] key, [F1] key and [F2] key. Moving the
mouse on the table top will move the highlighted bar, entry
selection marker or cursor as if you were using the cursor
keys UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT. The left mouse button provides
the same function as pressing the [ENTER] key. The right
mouse button provides the same function as pressing the [F2]
key. Pressing the left and right mouse buttons at the same
time provides the same functions as the [F1] key.
4.6 Description of the CDR2.TXT Parameter File
The parameter file CDR2.TXT is very important for the
operation of COMPUTER DARKROOM. The main purpose of this file
is to keep the parameters for the Black and White printing
papers.
Since new papers are being developed or the paper that
you use may not be included in the parameter file the program
gives you the option to add papers and their characteristics.
A complete description of how to use the Parameter File
Editor Module is given in this manual in section 5.5.
Great care should be taken when modifying this file so
that the proper values for the printing paper are entered in
such a way that the program can find and use them.
13
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
WARNING
You should never edit the CDR2.TXT file that is included
in your distribution diskette(s). Always use the copy of this
file that you created when you installed COMPUTER DARKROOM.
If you make a mistake and corrupt the CDR2.TXT file you can
recover by copying the original parameter file into the
subdirectory C:\CDR2.

5.0 MODULE DESCRIPTION
This section will cover each of the three print modules
and the Parameter File Editor Module in detail as well as the
Main Module Menu. The modules are covered in the order they
appear in the Main Module Menu.
5.1 Main Module Menu
The Main Module Selection Menu is what appears when you
run COMPUTER DARKROOM from the DOS prompt. All modules are
selected from this menu and return to this menu when they are
terminated.
5.1.1 Purpose
The purpose of the Main Module Menu is to allow the
selection of each of the print modules and Parameter File
Editor Module from a single menu. This menu is a separate
program that will start the print modules and provide a place
to return when they are completed. This provides a convenient
and consistent method for the operator to move between
program modules.
The Main Module Menu program is started from the DOS
command line with the command "CDR2". This is the only
command that the operator is required to remember since all
other program modules are selected from this menu.
14
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
5.1.2 Selections
When the Main Module Menu program is run from the DOS
prompt the screen will clear and a menu with four items will
be displayed. The first three are the Print Modules and the
last is the Parameter File Editor.
WARNING
You should read section 5.5 of this manual before
selecting the Parameter File Editor or editing the parameter
file.
You will select the module that you wish to work with by
using the cursor keys or mouse to move the highlighted bar
over the module you want to select and pressing the [ENTER]
key or the left mouse button. The screen will then be cleared
and the selected module will be retrieved and executed.
Figure 1 of appendix A shown an example of the Main
Module Menu screen.

5.2 Black and White Printing Module
After entering the Black and White Printing Module from
the Main Module Menu the main module screen will be displayed
as well as the available function keys. You may retrieve a
stored print specification from the disk or start entering
the data from a test print that you have completed.
You will notice a vertical bar in the left portion of
the screen. This bar contains the Entry Selection Marker and
it should be aligned with the Negative I.D. field. You are
now ready to enter the values that give the printing quality
that you require. Moving the Entry Selection Marker with the
cursor keys or mouse will allow you to align the marker with
the field you wish to change.
There is no exact order that these entries must be made
but the order that they appear in the screen I have found to
be useful.
15
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
You will notice that the field Date is not selectable.
The program will obtain the date from the system clock. The
field Contrast Grade is also not selectable directly from the
main module screen but will be modified when the Paper Type
field is selected.
You will also notice the exposure time window in the
upper right of the main screen with each of the lens openings
listed. Once enough information is entered for the program to
calculate the exposure times for each of these lens openings
the window will contain all these exposure times.
Figure 3 of Appendix A shows an example of the Black and
White Printing Module main screen.
5.2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to allow you to enter the
values that you have determined will provide with the print
quality you desire. Any modifications to these values after
their initial entries will notify the program to calculate
the exposure time to achieve the same print quality.
The fields that will force the program to calculate the
exposure time are Exposure Time, Lens Opening, Negative Size,
Projection Size, Magnification and Paper Type.
5.2.2 Necessary Entries
For the program to calculate the set of exposure times
that will be displayed in the exposure time window only the
Exposure Time and Lens Opening fields must be completed. In
cases where you do not wish to save a print specification and
you only want the exposure times for other lens openings,
this may be sufficient.
If you wish to save this print specification the program
will require you to have entered a Negative I.D., Exposure
Time and Lens Opening.
16
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
5.2.3 Optional Entries
The optional entries are Negative Size, Projection Size,
Magnification and Paper Type. These are called optional
entries because they are not required for the program to
calculate the exposure time set or to save the record to the
disk.
If any of these entries are not included the program
will not be able to calculate the exposure times for changes
to these values at a later date. This will limit the
usefulness of the program.
It is recommended that all the entries be made before
this record is saved to the disk. For instance, if the
program was not told originally what the paper type was it
can not calculate for changes to this parameter. If you
forget what paper type you used to make the first print you
will need to go through the test print process again to enter
the complete characteristics for that print.
5.2.4 Magnification Entry
The Magnification Entry is a special case and will be
covered here. There exists a strong relationship between the
Negative Size, Projection Size and Magnification Entries.
This relationship is mathematical and shown below.
Magnification = Projection Size / Negative Size
We can see that the magnification can be entered in two
ways either directly from the Magnification Entry or from the
Negative Size Entry and the Projection Size Entry. The
preferable method would be from the Negative Size Entry and
Projection Size Entry because the program will calculate the
magnification for you. Once the Negative Size Entry and the
Projection Size Entry are made and changes to these values
will force the program to calculate the magnification so that
it fits the relationship stated above. If an exposure time is
available the exposure time set will also be calculated for
the new magnification.
This is a very useful feature because it will allow you
to change the size of your print and the new exposure times
for the same print quality will be given to you by the
program with out the need for an additional test print.
17
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
You must be aware that the entry for the negative size
must be the short side of the negative holder measured in
inches. This will be approximately 1 inch for 35mm film and
2.25 inches for medium format film. You should check your
negative holders for these film formats and others that you
intend to use.
You must also be aware that the entry for the projection
size must be the short side of the projected image of the
enlarger and not the size of the printing paper. Because you
can magnify the image to print any portion of the negative
that you wish the paper size has no relationship to the
magnification.
5.2.5 Paper Selection
The Black and White Printing Module differs from the
other printing modules in that you have the ability to select
the printing paper that you are using.
The paper selection option is slightly different then
the other entry fields in that you first chose the paper that
you will use then you chose the contrast grade. For
multicontrast printing papers you will chose the contrast
filter instead of the contrast grade. This entry should be
made for each pint that you intend to save since at a later
date you may decide to change. the type of printing paper
that you are using or the contrast grade or contrast filter
from that used for the test print.
Figure 4 of Appendix A shows an example of the Paper
Type Selection screen.

5.3.5 Filter Pack Entries
The Filter Pack entry procedure consists of six entry
fields although you should use only two for any single print
specification. The standard subtractive filters Magenta, Cyan
and Yellow are used the most but the other filters are
provided if you use these. Each color printing filter has
it's own effect on the amount of light that passes through.
Because of this it is important to enter the color printing
filters that were used to give the color balance for the test
print.
Once the color printing filters are entered any change
to these filters will force the program to calculate the
exposure time set for the exact print quality that you first
obtained.
Figure 6 of Appendix A show an example of the Filter
Pack Entry screen.
5.3.6 Exposure Factor
The Exposure Factor Entry is used only for color
negative printing and is specified on the package of Kodak
Color Negative Printing Paper.
21
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
This value is very important and should be entered when
the test print is completed with the other values. At a later
time you will have a different pack of paper with a different
exposure factor. You can then simply change the exposure
factor for the new paper and the program will calculate the
exposure time set to compensate for this change.

5.5 Parameter File Editor
The COMPUTER DARKROOM Parameter File contains the
characteristics for all the black and white printing papers
that are .ed. The Parameter File Editor provides to the
user of this program the ability to modify this file to add,
modify or delete these characteristics. This file is simply a
special data base used by the Black and White Printing
Module.
WARNING
This parameter must only be edited with the Parameter
File Editor provided with COMPUTER DARKROOM, no other text
editor is acceptable. If you try to use another editor the
results will be unpredictable. Any lines within the parameter
that are not explicitly described in the following paragraphs
must not be modified in any way or the program may not
operate correctly.
Figure 10 of Appendix shows an example of the Parameter
File Editor screen.
5.5.1 File Description
Shown below is an example of some of the lines that
appear in this file. Please refer to this example during the
explanation which follows.

+Filter Number 4, 50
*
The first line of the example "
and should not be modified in any way. This line notifies the
Black and White Printing Module that the entries following
are paper characteristics.
The next line is a number, in this case "18", that
notifies the Black and White Printing Module of how many
papers are available for selection by the program user. This
number must match the number of papers that are contained in
the file exactly. If this number is less than the number of
papers the program will fail to read all the papers and the
ones that it does not read will not appear in the Paper Type
Selection Menu. If this number is larger then the number of
papers in the file the program will try to find the missing
papers and the program will fail to operate normally.
WARNING
When you add a paper you must increase this number by
one and when you delete a paper you must decrease this number
by one.
As you can see from the example each paper name and it's
characteristics are separated from any other information in
the file with a "*" character. Therefor the first paper name
in the file is following a "*" character line.
26
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
For each printing paper the paper name line is first
followed by the lines that specify each contrast grade and
the paper speed for that contrast grade. Each contrast grade
line is started with a "+" symbol then the contrast grade
name a ',' symbol followed by the ANSI (ASAP) paper speed
number.
The last line of each paper type is a simple "*"
character line.
5.5.2 Adding a Paper
To add a paper to the parameter file you must use the
Parameter File Editor Module that is provided with COMPUTER
DARKROOM.
Once you have selected the editor from the Main Module
Menu use the cursor keys or mouse to move the cursor to the
location in the file that you want the new paper to appear.
The order the papers appear in the file is the order they
will appear in the Paper Type Selection Menu of the Black and
White Printing Module. Enter the insert mode by pressing the
[INSERT] key and the cursor will change to the insert cursor
type. You may now press the [ENTER] key to create a new line
and start inserting the information for the paper you are
adding. Remember that each paper type must have a "*"
character line before it and a "*" character line after it.
Enter the paper name line as you want it to appear in the
Paper Type Selection Menu and the contrast grade lines with
all the information as described in the preceeding section.
WARNING
Remember to increase the paper count line by one for
each paper that you are adding.
After adjusting the paper count line to match the number
of papers that are specified in the parameter file you will
exit the Parameter File Editor by pressing the [F2] key. This
action will automatically save the modified parameter file
and return you to the Main Module Menu.
5.5.3 Deleting a Paper
To remove a paper to the parameter file you must use the
Parameter File Editor Module that is provided with COMPUTER
DARKROOM.
27
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
Once you have selected the editor from the Main Module
Menu use the cursor keys or mouse to move the cursor to the
first line that specifies the paper that you no longer want.
This will be the paper name line. Delete the lines for that
paper starting with the paper name line and continue through
the contrast grade lines until you reach the "*" character
line. Delete this line also. Now you should have the proper
number of "*" character lines, one between each paper type
specification.
WARNING
Remember to decrease the paper count line by one for
each paper that you are removing.
After adjusting the paper count line to match the number
of papers that are specified in the parameter file you will
exit the Parameter File Editor by pressing the [F2] key. This
action will automatically save the modified parameter file
and return you to the Main Module Menu.

6.0 DEVELOPING AN I.D. SYSTEM
Developing a system by which you can store and retrieve
your negatives and slides is very important. This concept
goes far beyond the needs of this program and should be
considered one of your highest priorities if you have not
developed a system by now. The Negative I.D. or Slide I.D. is
the key to locating your negatives and slides physically and
also their printing characteristics electronically through
the use of this COMPUTER DARKROOM program. Keeping the
printing information for each negative or slide you print
does you no good if you can not remember where the
information is on the disk files or you can not find the
negative or slide when you want to reprint it.
Contained in this section is an example of how an I.D.
System might be created. This I.D. System is what I use for
both negatives and slides. You must develop a system based on
your needs not mine. If this system works for you also please
use it or modify the system in any manner to fit your
specific needs. If the system that you create fits your needs
now and in the future then it is the right system. The
important point is that you have a system before you start
saving print records with this program.
28
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
I have found for my purpose that it is best to keep my
negatives and slides in archive type plastic pages that fit
onto three ring binders. Each of the pockets in these pages
are numbered and each of the pages are numbered. For the
pages that contain my slides there are twenty pockets and the
pages that contain my negatives vary depending on the film
format. Each of the binders that contain these pages are
numbered as well. Therefore a specific slide or negative is
assigned an I.D. Book Number / Page Number / Pocket Number.
This I.D. is written on the slide holder or negative border
with a fine point indelible pen so that I can return the
slide or negative to the proper place in the books.
In my system a slide or negative would be identified by
a number such as 2/10/15. This would mean book two, page ten
and pocket fifteen. This I.D. is what I use for the I.D. when
I run COMPUTER DARKROOM and store the print records.
This allows me at any time to retrieve a print
specification from the COMPUTER DARKROOM data base and know
it is the exact print parameters that were used for the slide
or print when I created the original test print. With the
help of the COMPUTER DARKROOM program I can now recreate that
print exactly or modify the printing parameters such as
magnification or color balance very quickly without the need
to make another test print.
It should be noted that COMPUTER DARKROOM stores the
records for the three print modules with different file name
extensions. .BWN for black and white negatives .CON for color
negatives and .COS for color slides. If you have followed the
installation instructions without modification then there are
three subdirectories for the purpose of storing the print
records, one for each module. C:\CDR2\BWPRINT for black and
white negatives, C:\CDR2\CNPRINT for color negatives and
C:\CDR2\CSPRINT for color slides. You should use these
features to help you organize your print record files so that
you will know where each print record is located.
I would suggest that each of the subdirectories be used
for it's intended print module and that each file within a
subdirectory be kept to a reasonable number of records. As
the files get larger the program will require a greater
period of time to find and store each record. This can be
accomplished by creating a separate record file for each
book. Therefore if I want to store the print parameters for
the slide from book three, page five, pocket eight the
information that I would give to the COMPUTER DARKROOM
program when I requested the record to be stored would be as
29
COMPUTER DARKROOM 2.0
shown below.
* Path: C:\CDR2\CSPRINT
* File Name: BOOK3
NOTE: The Slide I.D. field contained 3-5-8
To retrieve the same slide print record the information
that I would give to the COMPUTER DARKROOM program when I
requested that the record be read would be as shown below.
* Path: C:\CDR2\CSPRINT
* File Name: BOOK3
* I.D.: 3-5-8

Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
