VOREE
Voree was a town on the White River at the border of Racine
County and Walworth County in Wisconsin. This is now the area
directly west of Burlington, Wisconsin where Highway 11 crosses
the White River. It is classified by some as a ghost town and has
become a typical rural region, with a scattering of homes along
the roads much as in other parts of the state.
Voree was founded after the murder of Joseph Smith, Jr. in
1844 as a place of refuge for members of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints. These people, being believers in the
Book of Mormon, were subject to being scoffed at by others and
sometimes to persecution.
When Joseph Smith was killed, the church split. The largest
group followed Brigham Young and some of the other leading men
out west to Utah. A smaller but significant number accepted the
claims of James J. Strang that he had been appointed by Joseph
Smith as Smith's successor in the presidency of the church, and
that Voree had been appointed as a gathering place for the
church. According to the belief of this church, Joseph Smith
received a revelation from God nine days before his death in
which "Voree" was said to have the interpretation, "Garden of
Peace."
In later years many of those in the church relocated to
Beaver Island on Lake Michigan, where land was less expensive.
James Strang was also murdered in 1856. Since that time
those who accept him as a prophet have been dwindling in number.
There are now only one or two hundred, scattered at various
locations around the country.
"Voree Software" is the business name for a private firm
established by James D. Hajicek. He lives about four miles away
from the center of the town which might have become a city, but
did not.
If anyone has an interest in either Joseph Smith or James
Strang, please write for information, stating your particular
interest.

Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
