Introduction Introduction

INTRODUCTION

SUMDOS is a background utility program that remains resident in the
computers' memory even as you run other applications programs. SUMDOS
may be called at any time, while running other programs or while the
system prompt (ie A>) is on the screen. It remains present until you
turn off or reset your computer. When SUMDOS is called or activated it
opens a window on your screen and displays a menu listing the follow-
ing functions:

1 -CALCULATOR
Provides an on screen calculator similar to a pocket calculator
with the added feature of printing a "tape" to the printer.
Also has a 'Quick Calculator' in a smaller window.
2 -NOTE PAD
A mini word processor with full screen editing that uses the
most logical keys for ease of use. Includes day, date and time
stamping to memos. You may load, save and print documents
directly from the Note Pad.
3 -UTILITIES
Utilities for creating, removing, listing and changing
directories and renaming or erasing files. An invaluable
addition for programs that don't have hard disk support.
4 -READ FILE
Reads any text file to the screen. A super utility for reading
a file BEFORE merging/loading it into your word processor or
reading "READ.ME" files that are on so many program diskettes.
5 -TERMINAL COMMUNICATIONS
Provides a simple TTY terminal communications program for
for communicating with other computers such as Compuserve and
The Source. Has access to the phone dialer and allows you to
capture incoming data to a disk log file.

5
Introduction Introduction

6 -PHONE DIALER
Provides single key phone dialing for up to 450 names and
numbers in the Phone List file.
7 -ASCII TABLE
Lists all representable ASCII characters and their decimal
number. Useful for the beginning or professional programmer
that needs immediate access to an ASCII table.
8 -SCREEN SAVER
Turns off the video signal to the monitor to save the screen.

9 -MONTHLY CALENDAR
Displays the current months Calendar based on the DOS date.

0 -WRITE SCREEN TO DISK
Prompts the users for a file name and then writes the saved
screen (your applications' program screen) to disk.

You call the SUMDOS menu by pressing the ALT (alternate) key and while
it is depressed you then press the "=" (equals) key. You then may call
the function desired by pressing the number before the function or the
first letter of the function name.

There is no installation required for SUMDOS. The program recognizes
the the type Crt Adapter your computer has (Monochrome or Color) and
automatically sets itself appropriately. The program also retains the
drive and directory information from where it was loaded and looks to
that directory for the phone list file. Thus, you could be running a
program from and be logged to the A: drive, but when you access the
Phone Dialer it will look to where it was loaded from; For example if
SUMDOS and the Phone List file are on drive C: in a directory named
"UTILITY" the program will add the path name "C:\UTILITY" to the
"PHONE.LST" file name so that it can locate it with out you having
to search for it.

6
Introduction Introduction

Important Note: Try all the features of SUMDOS within you applications
programs to test for compatiblity. Some programs or other resident
programs may not work well with SUMDOS, so test now, and prevent a
possible system crash or loss of data later.

The SUMDOS program diskette contains the following files:
"SUMDOS.COM", and "PHONE.LST" a sample Phone List. file.

If a file named "READ.ME" is present on the diskette you should TYPE
the file to the screen or copy it to your printer. To TYPE the file to
the screen, place the diskette in the A: drive and enter "TYPE
READ.ME" and press . To Copy the file to the printer place the
diskette in drive A: and enter "COPY A:READ.ME PRN:" and press
. The "Read.me" file contains changes or updated information
regarding the use of the program.

Logical keys on the keyboard are used where ever possible for control
of the program. For example to delete a character you merely press the
"Del" key, to move up a line in text you use the "Up Arrow" key, to go
to the end of a line you use the "End" key.

PLEASE - DO NOT MAKE COPIES FOR OTHER USERS

The program diskette IS NOT copy protected so you may make backup
copies using your operating system diskcopy program or COPY command.
The SUMDOS program package is priced far below similar software pro-
ducts and is easily affordable by anyone interested in having a copy.
If you want to be in the software distribution business write us about

loading, you will be prompted whether you want the color turned off.
Press letter 'Y' to turn off the color or press letter 'N' for Color.

The system prompt will return after you load SUMDOS and you may then
proceed to load your applications program on top of SUMDOS.

If you have not been able to get the program up and running you should
review the steps above and try again or try the program on another
computer or contact your dealer.

If you get an error message about not having enough memory to load
your applications program then you will not be able to run SUMDOS
while using that application. To remove SUMDOS press Ctrl-Alt-Del to
restart your system.

The SUMDOS program occupies about 64K bytes of memory at all times so
if you do not have much memory installed in your computer and you can
not run some of your applications programs you should see your dealer
about expanding your computers' random access memory.

Remember, it is important to test your programs with SUMDOS to insure
compatibility. Especially test large spread sheet and word processing
files to see that you still have enough remaining memory to use your
programs.

If it is necessary to remove SUMDOS from memory, then you must restart
or reset your computer by pressing "CTRL-ALT-DEL"

IMPORTANT: SUMDOS may not be compatible with other memory resident
programs so you should test it by trying it! Always load

The current 'DOS' day, date and time is displayed on the first line.
If you don't want it simply press 'Ctrl Y' (with the cursor at the
beginning of the first line) and the date and time will disappear.
Press 'Ctrl P' and it will appear at the cursor location.

Entering Text

You are ready to start entering text as soon as the Note Pad window
appears. To quit the Note Pad, you must press the 'ESC' key. Doing so
will return you to the SUMDOS menu.

Moving About the Screen

Moving the cursor is most important in editing because it would be
impossible to edit anything without this capability. You may move the
cursor up, left, right, down, a page up, a page down, a word right, a
word left, to end of a line and to the beginning of a line, to the top
of the file or to the last page of the file. That's a lot of different
moves! The logical keys to use are the dual purpose keys on the
numeric key pad. There are also control key combinations that may be
used for moving the cursor and they are listed with logical keys.

Remember, if you press a cursor control key (using the numeric key
pad) and a number shows upon the screen, it means you are in the Num
Lock mode and you should press the Num Lock key once to change modes.

20
Note Pad Note Pad

The cursor control keys are:

Cursor Control Logical or Control Key
Desired Key Combination

Move one line Up Up arrow Ctrl E
Move one line Down Down arrow Ctrl X
Move one character left Left arrow Ctrl S
Move one character right Right arrow Ctrl D
Move to end of line End key Ctrl F
Move to start of line Home key Ctrl A
Move Up page/screen Pg Up key Ctrl R
Move Down page/screen Pg Dn key Ctrl C

To insert a blank line in text, press return while at the end or
beginning of a line. Enter several lines of sample text. Try each of
the cursor control keys. Try both the logical keys and the control key
combinations, just to test them. Remember, if you get a number when
pressing a logical key press the Num Lock key to change from numbers
to the logical cursor control commands.

Deleting Characters and Lines

The ability to delete and move text is also important. You may delete
single characters or a line of text. You may backspace and delete the
left character by pressing the backspace key (a left arrow key located
on the top row of the keyboard next to the "+=" key or by pressing
"Ctrl H". To delete the character at the cursor location press the
"Del" key or "Ctrl G". Another combination is "Ctrl Y" which deletes
all the characters from the current position in a line to the end of
the line.

21
Note Pad Note Pad

With several lines typed on the screen, use the cursor controls and
move the cursor to the beginning of line 2. Press "Ctrl Y" and the
line disappears! Think of letter "Y" as the "Yank it out" function.
The line not only disappears but so does the space that the line used.

Next, press to insert a blank line. Place the cursor on the
blank line and Press "Ctrl P". The previously deleted line will re-
appear. Think of letter "P" as the "Put it back" function. Pressing
"Ctrl P" will recall ONLY the last line deleted.

Remember, pressing Ctrl Y will delete (Yank out) all characters in a
line from the position of the cursor to the end of the line and Ctrl P
Puts them back!. The last deleted line is saved in a line buffer so
you may recall it at the same or any other location.

Move the cursor to the start of the second line and press return
again. Then press "Ctrl E or the key to move the cursor up
one line to the new blank line. The cursor should be at the beginning
of the second line and the line should be blank.

Type Ctrl P and the previously deleted line will reappear again.
Without moving the cursor press Ctrl P again. If there is enough room
the buffered line will be added to the current line.

READ TEXT FILE

The Read File function provides a utility for reading and writing to
the screen any disk text file. This utility is called by pressing
letter 'R' or number '4' at the SUMDOS Main Menu. The Read File
utility is similar to the TYPE command of DOS. This utility does not
have any provision for editing text. However, it can be used to read
files that were previously edited and saved to disk using the Note Pad
or any ASCII (text) files created by other applications programs.

The Read File screen resembles the following:

This utility is useful for reading 'READ.ME' files or for previewing a
file before merging or loading it into a word processor. It could also
be used for reading help files created by you for your own applica-
tions programs.

When accessed the Read File window opens and you are prompted for a
text file name. If the file is on the logged directory then simply
type in the full file name and press return. Otherwise enter the
drive, path name (if any) and file name (ie C:\LETTERS\MYLTR.TXT). Wild
card type characters such as '?'and '*' are NOT allowed.

Errors will cause an error message to appear. Generally most these
errors will be caused by and error in input format, such as forgetting
a back slash '\' or by misspelled file or path names.

The utility will read and display 20 lines at a time and then pause
and wait for you to press the space bar before continuing.

You may quit reading at anytime by pressing the 'ESC' key. Pressing
'ESC' returns you to the Main Menu.

You may page through the file using the PgUp and PgDn keys. You may
also jump to the end or start of a file using the End and Home keys.

The file may searched for a phrase, word or partial word by pressing
letter 'S' and then entering the item you want to search for. Upper
and lower case are ignored. A forward search is performed starting at
the current location in the file and moving toward the end. The search
locates only the first occurrence of the search item on a page. Others
may be present on the page or screen but are ignored.

Your current position in a file is indicated by a percentage of the
file that has been read.

TERMINAL COMMUNICATIONS

The Terminal Communications utility is a simple ASCII Terminal
Emulator that allows you to communicate with services such as
Compuserve, Easy-Net, or The Source.

The Terminal function is accessed by pressing either letter 'T' or
number '5' at the SUMDOS Menu. The modem must be on prior to selection
or you will get a message 'Modem Disconnected' and then be returned to
the SUMDOS Menu. When displayed the the terminal screen will show a
function key menu at the bottom of the screen.

The Terminal screen resembles the following:

ÕÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͸

The function key commands are as follows:

F1 = Displays the Phone Dialer Menu. See the instructions in the
next chapter for use of the Phone Dialer. The Phone Dialer
uses the dial command of 'ATDT' therefore if your modem uses
another command then you may not use the dialer.

F2 = Clears the screen.

F3 = Prompts you for a file name and opens a disk log or capture
file. All incoming and out going data is captured to a disk
text file. The file is closed by pressing F4. After opening
a file the file name is displayed at the bottom of the
screen above the function key prompts.

F4 = Closes an open file created by function F3. The captured
file may then be read by the Read File utility or by a word
processor that reads ASCII (text) files.

F5 = Sends the command 'ATH0' to hang up phone. Effective only
when line carrier is not present. This is NOT a disconnect
command.

F7 = Displays communications parameters menu. See below.

F10 = Quits the Terminal function and returns you to the Main Menu.

The default communication parameters for the Terminal program are 1200
baud, 7 bit word size, 1 stop bit, Even parity and using comm port
one. You may change the parameters upon entry to the function by
pressing letter 'Y' to the "Any Changes Y/N" prompt. Then press the
number of the item you want to change and enter the new parameter.

32
Terminal Terminal

The terminal is set for full duplex operation. In other words the
characters typed by you are not echoed to the screen until they are
returned by the computer (or the modem) you are commnunicating with.
Therefore, you may not effectively communicate with a half duplex
system.

The Terminal function should be compatible with Hayes or Hayes com-
patible modems and fully IBM-PC compatible computers.

When the screen comes up, and you have responded to the baud rate, you
are ready to start using the program. You may enter the dial command
'ATDT' followed by the phone number of the service you want to call.
Or use the phone dialer to connect you to your service.

Refer to your modems' instruction manual and the instructions for the
service you want to connect, with for more information about using
terminal communications.

Important Note: You quit this utility by pressing function key 'F10'
instead of pressing 'ESC' as you would in all other utilities in
SUMDOS. Pressing 'F10' returns you to the SUMDOS Main Menu.

PHONE DIALER

The Phone Dialer creates files on disk containing the name, a commemnt
and phone numbers of persons or businesses you regularly call. It
allows you to dial those numbers by pressing a single key. You must
have a Hayes compatible modem for this function to operate. The
communication parameters used are those of the Terminal function. (see
prior chapter) The Phone Dialer function is accessed by pressing
either letter 'P' or number '6' at the SUMDOS Menu.

The Phone Dialer screen resembles the following:

The Phone List or Directory is kept in a file named 'Phone1.Lst'. The
file contains 50 records and each record contains space for 9 entries.
You may have up to 450 names and numbers in a phone list file. If the
first list becomes full you may create an additional list by pressing
letter 'G'to 'Get next phone list'. The next file is named Phone2.lst.

Creating and Updating Phone Lists

Pressing letter 'A' or 'C' will cause a prompt to appear asking you to
enter the number of the item you want to change. If you are just
starting enter number '1'. You will then be prompted for the name and
phone number. You may cancel the change or add request by just press-
ing return while at the 'Change Which Item' prompt. If your phone uses
the older style rotary dialer then preceed the phone number with the
letter 'P' (ie "P555 1234"). The letter 'P' tells the modem to use
Pulse dialing. The default is set to 'T' for Touch Tone dialing.

Pressing letter 'D' causes you to be prompted for the number of the
item you want to delete. Pressing '1' would delete item number one and
update the diskette file. Pressing return while at the 'Delete Which
Item' prompt cancels the delete request.

Selecting Names

You move through the phone list file, displaying 9 names and numbers
at a time by pressing either 'N' for the Next List or 'P' the Previous
List. You may also Jump thru the list records by pressing letter 'J'
followed by the number of pages you want to jump past. Remember each
page has space for 9 names and numbers.

You may also find a number for a specific name by pressing letter 'S'
for Search. The Search Function scans the entire file looking for a
matching word or name. If found, the page with the name is shown on

36

the screen otherwise the screen will show the first page of names. Any
portion of a wordor name may be searched for. For example you may want
to search for a name and not know the correct spelling. You may enter
a portion of the name. For example you may enter "Jo" and it will find
Joe, John, Johnathan or any other name that starts with "Jo". The
difference between lower and upcase is ignored so searching for "jo"
will also search for "JO", "jO" or "Jo".

Auto Dialing

Be sure your modem is on and ready to operate.

With a Phone List on the screen simply press the number (1 to 9)
preceeding the name and phone number you want dialed.

The number will be dialed by the modem and you will be prompted to
'Pick up the Phone', Press 'ESC' and Turn off Modem. Turning off the
modem eliminates line noise and pressing 'ESC' exits the dialer.
Pressing the return key returns you to the phone list.

Important Note: The Phone Dialer looks for Phone List file on the
drive and directory from where it was loaded from. If you are using a
hard disk drive, then it is suggested that you place SUMDOS and its'
associated files in a separate directory and load it using an autoexec
batch file and have your batch file return you to the drive or direc-
tory of your choice. If files are not found then a new empty file is
created.

The default communication parameters for the Phone Dialer will be the
same as the Terminal Comunications function. To change the parameters
you must first access the Terminal function and make your changes. The
changes remain in effect until the computer is reset of switched off.

37
Phone Dialer Phone Dialer

A printed list may be obtained by pressing letter 'H' for 'Hard copy'.
You will be prompted for the starting and ending number of the pages
you want to have printed.

Pressing 'ESC' returns you to the SUMDOS Main Menu.

ASCII TABLE

The ASCII Table shows the ASCII characters and their ASCII decimal
number for characters '0' through '255'. The screen will show thirty
two characters at a time in individual boxes. Pressing return after
the screen is displayed will cause the next 32 characters to be dis-
played. Certain Control Characters that can not be displayed on the
screen will not be represented and a blank is displayed on the screen.

Pressing the 'Esc' key will take you back to the SUMDOS Main Menu.

Screen Saver Screen Saver

SCREEN SAVER

The Screen Saver allows you to turn off the screen output by pressing
letter 'S'. Press any other key and the screen output returns. Press
the 'Esc' key and you will return to your program.

The purpose of the Screen Saver is to allow you to leave your computer
and monitor, for a period of time, without having to worry about
having the image on the screen become permanently 'burned' on (or
burned in?).

If you leave a monitor on with the same image, for extended periods,
then that image will become permanent! You'll even be able to see it
after you turn off the power to your monitor!

Which brings up another point. Some users actually do turn off their
monitors and leave the computer on while they are absent for anywhere
from a few minutes to a few hours. It is easier on your monitor to
use the Screen Saver than it is to power up and down so often.

It takes quite some time before you will ruin your monitor. However,

you'll add to the useful life of your monitor by using the Screen
Saver.

When ever you leave your computer, for any reason, call up SUMDOS by
pressing 'ALT =' and then press letter 'S'.

When you return to the computer simply press the return key or any
other key and the screen will come back on. Or press the 'ESC' key to
exit SUMDOS and you will be back in your program right where you left
it.

WRITE SCREEN TO DISK

The Write Screen function reads the saved screen of the applications
program that is running on top of SUMDOS and writes that screen to the
disk after prompting the user for a file name. File names with full
pathnames up to 64 characters in length are allowed.

Only screens of the text type mode may be saved since SUMDOS will not
activate while a program is in the graphics mode.

Select the Write Screen function by pressing either letter 'W' or the
number '0' (zero) while at the SUMDOS Main Menu. You will then be
prompted for a file name. Enter the file name and press the return
key. The screen will then be written to disk.

You may write the screen to a new file or append the screen to an
existing file. Appending allows you to save several screens to the
same file. After selecting the option by pressing either 'A' or 'W'
you are prompted for a file name. If append is selected and the file
name entered does not already exist then the write operation will be
aborted.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
