NEW FEATURES IN QFILER VERSION 3.2

===============================================================
(February 1, 1993 -- version 3.2B)
===============================================================

QFILER 3.2B incorporates a number of small changes implemented
in versions 3.2A1 through 3.2A5 and QF beta version 3.2BXB in
response to user suggestions. The primary reason for this
version is the following feature:

PKZIP v2.04E supported:
-----------------------
PKZIP v2.x introduced additional compression algorithms and
changed the format of its listing of internal files. QFILER
recognizes these changes and correctly works with PKZIP in
QFILER's Zoom window.

===============================================================
(August 10, 1991 -- version 3.2A)
===============================================================

QFILER 3.2 is a major revision to QFILER versions 3.0-3.0E and
3.1-3.1Le which had previously replaced QFILER 2.x versions. The
following features are new to version 3.2:

MANUAL (documentation) COMPLETELY REWRITTEN:
--------------------------------------------
After nearly 3-1/2 years we have completely rewritten the QFILER
manual and documentation. Changes made in the 3.1x series of 20
revisions have been integrated into both the printed manual and
on-disk documentation.

LIST menu option changed to LINK:
---------------------------------
The bottom menu option "List" has been renamed to "Link" to more
clearly indicate the function of this menu choice -- which is
that of providing links with external programs. LITLBOOK and
FILECAT links have been removed from QFILER and are no longer
supported in the "Link" submenu.

UNDELETE added to Link Submenu:
-------------------------------
QFILER now supports UNDELETE.EXE supplied with DOS 5.0 or with
Central Point PC-Tools. If UNDELETE is in a pathed directory, you
may undelete files in the "current" QFILER subdirectory by
pressing "L" (Link), "U" (Undelete).

DOS 5.0 EDIT automatically used as file editor:
-----------------------------------------------
If you are using DOS 5.0 and wish to use EDIT, simply omit the
QFED.BAT file and QFILER will link to EDIT automatically.

XCOPY support added:
--------------------
If you wish to use DOS XCOPY to copy an entire directory, display
the target directory on one side of the QFILER screen and the
source directory on the other side. With the source directory
the "current" directory, press CTRL-X and QFILER will call DOS
XCOPY.

Delete directory function added (QFDELDIR.EXE):
-----------------------------------------------
To compliment the new XCOPY support, you may now delete an entire
directory -- including subdirectories, hidden and system files.
If QFDELDIR.EXE is in a pathed subdirectory, you may press "D"
(Delete) when a subdirectory is the "current" file. QFILER will
call QFDELDIR, which reports complete statistics about the
directory, then confirms you REALLY want to delete the directory.

ARJ compressed file support added:
----------------------------------
QFILER now supports Jung's ARJ compressed file format in addition
to LZH, ZIP, PAK and ARC compressed file formats. Ctrl-A
continues to work for all formats, while Ctrl-J supports ARJ
explicitly. You must have a copy of ARJ.EXE in a pathed
subdirectory.

Additional networking changes implemented:
------------------------------------------
In response to suggestions from both Novell and Banyan Vines
system managers, a number of changes have been made to QFILER,
including the addition of recognizing an QFPATH environment
variable. You may now SET QFPATH= a subdirectory that QFILER may use for temporary files. QFLIST
will also recognize the QFPATH environment variable.

Other changes:
--------------
1. A change was made in the way QFILER handles file attributes
when copying to and from floppy disks, which results in
faster copies.
2. Files with the archive bit set are now shown with a small
dot next to the file time instead of the letter "a". Folks
were often interpreting the "a" as AM. 'Course it's kinda
hard to have a 20:30AM, but... oh, well, we DO listen to
user suggestions.
3. You may now delete tagged read-only, hidden and system files
-- with confirmation.
4. Pull-down menus now "wrap". In other words, if you are at
the bottom of a pull-down menu and press the down-arrow, the
first menu item is highlighted. If you are the top, and
press the up-arrow, the last item is highlighted.
5. If QFILER is set to default to QFLIST (instead of Buerg's
LIST) and QFLIST.EXE is not in a pathed subdirectory, QFILER
will revert to Buerg's LIST. If LIST is not available, then
you may not browse or view files.
6. When starting QFILER, you may include the command-line
option /m= so that QFILER will display only
certain files when it runs. You may change the file mask
when QFILER is running by pressing Shift-F10.
7. A registered version of QFILER shows a "registered" sign-on
screen rather than the "shareware" sign-on screen.
8. QFILER stays at its affordable price: Just $20 for QFILER,
or $30 for QFILER bundled with QFLIST. Supplied on a 3.5"
disk for an additional $3. Both options include QFIND,
QFDELDIR, and QFCFG. Quantity pricing and site licenses are
available.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
