É͹ Batch Operations ÌÍ»º In batch mode, you may COPY, MOVE, DELETE or DESTROY files. The desired ºº command is specified on the command line, as a "numeric" option. The numbersºº used correspond to function keys used interactively... ºº /5 - COPY files ([^F5]) /6 - MOVE files ([^F6]) ºº /7 - DELETE files ([^F7]) /8 - DESTROY files ([Sh+^F7]) ºº Other numeric options useful with batch mode... ºº /1x - "x" defines sort sequence (E,D,N,S,T,U). Lowercase means inverted orderºº
/2xxxxxx - "x"s define COPY/MOVE/DELETE Control settings. ºº Mºº Files will be processed in the sequence specified, and according to the ºº settings of the COPY/MOVE/DELETE Controls - [PgDn] for more info on this. ºº If sequence and Controls are not specified, the default values will be used. ºº Mºº Attribute and/or timestamp filters may be used to select files in batch mode.ºº Files with read-only, hidden or system attributes will not be processed in ºº batch mode unless they are explicitly selected by an attribute filter. ºº Mºº If a file to be copied or moved is "read-only" in the target, the command ºº will proceed only if the file is also read-only in the working directory. ºº Mºº Any error encountered will terminate EDDY, and "ERRORLEVEL" will be non-zero.º ºÉ͹ Using Commands ÌÍ»º For most commands, just move the highlighted cursor line to the file you're ºº interested in, and press the key for the command you want. ºº Mºº Some of the most common command keys are... ºº Mºº [F3] displays the file's contents (LOOK), OR... ºº ...if the cursor is on a directory, displays that directory's files ºº [F4] lets you modify the file's contents (PATCH) ºº Mºº Other commands "tag" a file for later action. When you press [Enter], all ºº tagged files will have the indicated action performed on them. For example: ºº Mºº [F5] tags the file with "Copy" (ºº [F6] tags the file (or directory) with "Move" ºº [F7] tags the file (or directory) with "Delete" ºº Mºº MANY more commands are available. A summary of them is provided on the next ºº four pages. [PgDn] if you want to look at those pages. ºº Mºº When EDDY asks you to enter something, you can always get HELP to decide whatºº to enter by pressing [F1]. 2º G'$. ¾É͹ More Function Key Commands ÌÍ [PgDn] Í»º * * * See LOOK, FIND and PATCH for commands used only in those modes * * * ºº [F9] exits temporarily to DOS (until you type "EXIT") ºº You don't always have to exit to DOS... %ºº [Alt+F9]: Execute COM, EXE or BAT file without leaving EDDY ºº [Sh+F9]: Execute DOS command defined in EDDY.USE (see "Point-n-Shoot") ºº [Sh+^F9]: Execute DOS command on all files that match EDDY.USE ºº [Sh+F8]/[Sh+^F8]: like [Sh+F9]/[Sh+^F9], but uses EDDY's default command ºº Mºº Some variations on the [F3] theme... The decision is based upon a comparison ofºº the target and working directories. Five cases are considered:
ºº 1. File not in target 2. File in target is older 3. File in target newer ºº 4. Target file has same timestamp, different size 5. Same date/time/size ºº Mºº For each of these cases, there is a Control. Each Control may be set to one ºº of the values "Y", "N" or "C". "Y" means tag the file in working directory ºº if this case is encountered; "N" means don't tag in this case. "C" means ºº display the two directory entries, and wait for confirmation from the user. ºº "C" applies to one-file commands - e.g., [F5] - and repeated ones - [^F5]. ºº Mºº Thus, to COPY files updated since the corresponding file in the target, and ºº alert you if any files in the target are newer, or a different size... ºº Press [Alt+c], set the Controls to N,Y,C,C,N (default values are Y,Y,C,C,N) ºº and press [^F5] to tag the files. Then [Enter] to do the actual copying. ºº Mºº There is a 6th Control, which determines whether files in the target are con-ºº sidered when tagging files for DELETE or DESTROY. This may be "Y" or "N". ºº Mº É͹ COPY/MOVE/DELETE Controls (Batch) ÌÍ»º These Controls determine which files will be tagged for COPY/MOVE/DELETE whenºº you use options /5, /6, /7 or /8.
Each Control may be set to "Y" ºº or "N". "Y" means tag the file in working directory if the corresponding ºº case is encountered; "N" means don't tag in this case. The "C" setting is ºº not used for batch operations; "C" in batch is treated the same as "N". ºº Mºº There is a 6th Control, which determines whether files in the target are con-ºº sidered when tagging files for DELETE or DESTROY. This may be "Y" or "N". ºº Mºº The Controls may be set by using option /2. If the default settings are ºº correct, /2 is not needed. Normal defaults are N,Y,C,C,N,N. Thus, to COPY ºº files newer than corresponding files in the target, enter a command like... ºº "EDDY/5 C:\WORK A:" ºº To DELETE files that are duplicates of those in the target, enter... ºº "EDDY/7/2NNNNYY C:\WORK A:" ºº Mº ÌÉ͹ COPY & MOVE ÌÍ»º ,More info on COPY & MOVE: [PgDn] ºº Press [F5] to tag a file for COPYing to the target directory. Copying occurs ºº when you UPDATE, by pressing [Enter]. To MOVE a file, press [F6]. MOVE works ºº just like COPY, except the file is deleted from the working directory. You ºº can also move a directory (and all its files and subdirectories) to a target ºº on the same disk - sometimes known as "prune and graft". ºº Mºº Copied files normally keep their original timestamp. If you want to put the ºº current date/time on files copied, use [^Enter] to start the UPDATE process. ºº Mºº The Archive attribute is normally turned OFF in the working directory and ON ºº in the target for files copied, if the working directory is a fixed disk and ºº the target is a diskette. To leave the attribute unchanged, use option /A. ºº Mºº Files may be tagged for copying with TAB expansion and/or BIT-stripping by ºº pressing [Alt+0] thru [Alt+8], or [Alt+b], respectively. ºº Mºº [^F5] reviews all files in the working directory to decide whether to COPY ºº or not. The decision is based on a comparison of timestamps on the files in ºº the working and target directories, and the settings of the COPY/MOVE con- ºº trols (described on the next HELP screen). [^F6] does the same for MOVE. º ß-É͹ Customizing ÌÍ»º To create a customized version of EDDY, type "EDDY/0 [work]". ºº "EDDY.COM" must be in [work]. ºº No directory editing, copying, etc. can be done when /0 is used. ºº The following features may be customized: #ºº - Screen colors - [Alt+r] (note: [Alt+r] valid only during customizing) ºº - Options - select via [Alt+o] or from the command line ºº - COPY/MOVE/DELETE Controls - select via [Alt+c] ºº - Sort sequence - use [Alt+d],+e],+h],+n],+s],+u] and/or [Alt+i] ºº - Default point-n-shoot command - select via [Sh+F8] ºº - Directory tree display - select via [Alt+w]/[Alt+t] ºº - Attribute filter - select via [Alt+a] !ºº - Mouse action/sensitivity - use [Alt+m]/[Alt+Sh+m] ºº - LOOK mode bit-stripping, line-wrapping and TAB default settings ºº in LOOK mode, use [Alt+b], [Alt+l] and [Alt+number], respectively ºº - Hex/ASCII toggle key - in LOOK mode, [Sh+Tab] lets you select the key ºº (normally [Tab]) used to toggle between hex and ASCII formats ºº - Auto-scrolling speed - in LOOK mode, use [^PgUp]/[^PgDn] ºº - Sector patching - [PgDn] for more info on this ºº When everything is set the way you want it, press [Enter]. The customized ºº copy, named EDDY.COM, will be written in your working directory with the ºº settings you selected as defaults. The original EDDY will be renamed EDDY.OLDº É͹ DELETE or DESTROY Files ÌÍ»º Mºº With the cursor placed on the line of the display for the file you want to ºº delete, press [F7] (or [Sh+F7] for "destroy"). The display will show that theºº file has been marked for deletion (or destruction) later. Subdirectories may ºº be deleted also, even if not empty. )ºº Mºº "Destroy" means that the file will not only be deleted from the directory, ºº but will be completely overwritten, so that the data in the file cannot be ºº read or recovered. This is useful to protect sensitive or classified data. ºº Mºº When a file is selected for deletion, any other changes you may have made to ºº the file previously are undone. The actual deletion will be done at the time ºº you enter UPDATE mode. At any time prior to entering UPDATE mode, you may ºº change your mind and deselect the file by pressing [F2] - the UNDO command. ºº Mºº Mºº [Alt+F7] "logically deletes" a file. This means that the file will be ºº ignored during any of the repeated operations - [^F3] thru [^F7]. ºº Mºº Mºº Mº É͹ Disabling Disk PATCHing ÌÍ»º Mºº This very powerful feature can be extremely dangerous in the hands of an ºº inexperienced user, or worse, someone who is intent on doing damage. ºº Mºº For this reason, some users prefer not to have the capability readily avail- ºº able, especially on machines that are used by more than one person. ºº Mºº By creating a customized version of EDDY, you can PERMANENTLY disable the ºº absolute sector patching feature. Just answer "n" when the question: ºº
"Allow disk PATCHing by sector in new EDDY (y/n)?"
ºº is asked, and the customized version will have this feature disabled. ºº Mºº If you answer "y", you can change ANYTHING on a disk, including format data. ºº Mºº Even if you customize again, using the disabled EDDY.COM as the master copy, ºº sector patching cannot be re-enabled. 'ºº Mºº Your original copy of EDDY.COM (or EDDY.OLD, after customizing), will still ºº have the sector patching capability, so it should be kept safely on a floppy ºº disk, tucked away where only you can get to it. ºº Mº H <É͹ Disk Image Copy/Restore ÌÍ»º More info on disk-oriented operations: [PgDn] ºº DISK-IMAGE COPY... :ºº To copy an entire disk to a file, move the cursor to the "Drive" line (third ºº line of the first screen) and press [Sh+F5]. The target must be on a separateºº drive. The disk image will be written to a file called "DRIVE.x" (where "x" ºº is the source drive letter). 0ºº Mºº The file will be 4 bytes longer than the source disk (6 bytes for hard disk),ºº as the sector size and # of sectors are written at the beginning of the file,ºº for checking format compatibility when restoring the file to a disk. To get aºº file that is an exact image your disk, use PATCH to delete these first bytes.ºº Mºº DISK-IMAGE RESTORE... 7ºº A file built as described above may be restored to full disk format by copy- ºº ing it (in EDIT mode), using [Sh+F5]. The target disk must be same format ºº as the original disk used to create the disk-image file. ºº Mºº When this command is used, the display will show "Copy(!)" next to the file. ºº The copying will be done when you enter UPDATE (press [Enter] from EDIT). ºº [Sh+F5] cannot be used if any other COPY or MOVE operations are pending. ºº Mº É͹ EDIT a File's Directory Entry ÌÍ»º Move the cursor to the file whose directory entry is to be changed, and type ºº the new data directly over the old. Subdirectories can be edited, too. ºº Mºº You can change filename, extension, date, time and attributes. Entries which ºº you change are flagged by an "*" at the end of the line. An "*" also appears ºº next to the field, except attributes (changes indicated by capital letters). ºº Mºº If you enter a character that's not valid for the field, EDDY "beeps" and ºº ignores it. If you try to leave a line where you have entered bad data (e.g.,ºº a blank filename), EDDY "beeps" and puts the cursor on the field in error. ºº Mºº In addition to "type-over" editing, these editing commands are also provided:ºº 1. [=] sets date & time fields equal to EDDY's internal timestamp values.ºº 2. [Alt+equal] freezes EDDY's timestamp at date/time of current file ºº or directory. [Alt+minus] restores use of the DOS date/time. ºº 3. [+] toggles attribute byte values, and doesn't move the cursor. ºº 4. [^y] & [^n] set the attribute byte for all files. ºº Mºº Changes are made on disk only in UPDATE mode (press [Enter] from EDIT). Any ºº time prior to entering UPDATE mode, to reset all fields to their original ºº values, press [F2] for UNDO. [^F2] undoes all changes to all files. º É͹ Error Recovery for COPY/MOVE ÌÍ»º If a read error is encountered during a COPY or MOVE operation, EDDY offers ºº three alternatives: 9ºº 1 - Write a block (sector) of "#" bytes in the new copy of the file in ºº place of the block that cannot be read. The new copy will be the ºº same length as the original. (ºº 2 - Skip the bad block entirely, and write the next good block right ºº after the previous block in the new copy. This obviously results in ºº a new copy that is shorter than the original. ºº 3 - Abort the copy/move process. In this case the DOS error code will be ºº displayed, and no new copy will be produced. EDDY will continue with ºº any other updates that may have been requested for other files. ºº Mºº After an update where choice 1 or 2 has been selected, the message displayed ºº for the file(s) involved will be "copied(?)" or "moved(?)", to indicate that ºº the new copy is not exactly the same as the original. Also, the date and timeºº on the new copy will always be the current date and time in this case. ºº Mºº If more than one error is found on a file, all will be treated in the same ºº way, according to the alternative you select when the first is encountered. ºº Mºº Mº ÌÉ͹ FIND String ÌÍ»º 3More info on FIND: [PgDn] ºº Press [Alt+f] to enter a string to be found, or to reuse a previous string. ºº An initial string is shown in hex and ASCII; new strings may be entered by ºº "PATCH"ing the string that's displayed (initially, "_"). ºº In LOOK mode, [f] repeats the previous find. ºº [Tab] toggles hex/ASCII formats; [Sh+Tab] lets you change the toggle key. ºº Mºº The end of the string to be used for the search is shown by "". ºº To set the end at the current cursor position, press [End]. ºº Mºº To begin the search for the string, press [Enter] or [^Enter]. ºº [Enter] finds strings on a "close match" basis; i.e., either upper or ºº lower case will be considered a match. Blanks in the string will match ºº any number of consecutive blanks, TABs, carriage returns and line feeds.ºº [^Enter] finds only exact matches. (ºº Mºº To terminate a search, press [^c]. ºº Mºº If the string is found, the 1st character of the matching string is displayedºº on the first line, highlighted and blinking. ºº Mº D OÉ͹ FIND String ÌÍ»º Mºº If LOOK mode bit-stripping is turned on, bits will be stripped from the file ºº data before the comparison with the search string. ºº Mºº Two features are provided to make the search more flexible: ºº Mºº 1. A "global match" character, which will match any byte in the file, may ºº be specified by pressing [Alt+g]. This can be any character you like, ºº except space. Default is "?". )ºº Mºº 2. A "don't match" attribute may be given to any byte in the search stringºº string by pressing [Alt+k] and then typing the byte. ºº Mºº A "don't match" byte is highlighted in reverse video, and will match ºº any byte in the file NOT equal to it. Bytes are reset to normal match- ºº ing if you type any character over them. ºº Mºº If you want to search through all files, one after another, press [^f]. ºº Mºº [Alt+r] initiates "FIND and REPLACE". For more info on this, [PgDn]. ºº Mº $)1 uSÉ͹ EDDY (EDit DirectorY) ÌÍ»º If you just type "EDDY" and press [Enter], you'll see this screen. To the right ofºº each command a "hot key" is shown. This key may be used to execute the com- ºº mand directly from EDDY, without using the menu. To select a command from ºº the menu, you may: 1) press the highlighted letter for that command; or ºº 2) move the cursor to the command and press [Enter] (or left click mouse); orºº 3) press the indicated "hot key" for the command (unless the hot key is shownºº enclosed by "< >", in which case the hot key cannot be used from the menu). ºº Mºº Some lines on some panels show "(sub-menu)" instead of a hot key. If you ºº choose one of these, another panel will be displayed, with commands relating ºº to the subject you chose. These commands may be selected in the same 3 ways ºº described above. <ºº Mºº If you don't want to choose a command, press [Esc] (or right click mouse). ºº Mºº A list of other topics available is displayed across the top of the screen. ºº To view the other panels, press [Left] or [Right]. º ÌÉ͹ Mouse Meanderings ÌÍ»º 3More info on mice: [PgDn] ºº If EDDY detects a mouse (driver), the bottom line of the display has arrows ºº pointing up to the normally-unused right side of the screen. ºº Mºº EDDY reacts to mouse movement just as though you had used the arrow keys in ºº a corresponding way - UNLESS you have moved all the way right, to the scroll ºº bar. Up or down movement, or clicking, there scrolls the display. ºº Mºº A left mouse button "click" on a directory line makes that the new working ºº directory. A left click on a file line LOOKs at that file. ºº Mºº When EDDY asks for confirmation that you want to proceed with some action, a ºº left click means "yes, proceed". A right click means "no, forget it". ºº Mºº If EDDY asks for either [Enter] or [^Enter], a left click is the same as ºº [Enter], and a double left click is the same as [^Enter]. ºº Mºº Click either button in the indicated area at the right hand side of the ºº screen to display the menu. A simultaneous left and right click gets HELP. ºº Mºº To adjust the mouse sensitivity, press [Alt+Sh+m]. º É͹ More on Mice ÌÍ»º Mºº In LOOK mode, ASCII (text) display format, a left click calls up the menu. ºº In hex format, the otherwise unused area between the two parts of the displayºº is indicated from the bottom line; left click here to call the menu. ºº Mºº When PATCHing, a left click anywhere except the indicated "click area" means ºº "update" (same as [Enter]); a double left click means "update, don't change ºº timestamp" (same as [^Enter]) /ºº Mºº A right click returns to EDIT from LOOK, or to LOOK from PATCH.
ºº Mºº The normal action for a left-button click, as described on the preceding ºº screen, is the same as pressing [F3]. If you prefer some other command for ºº use with the left button, press [Alt+m], and then the key for the command ºº you want to use. The function for a left click will be changed accordingly. ºº Mºº You may also want to use [Alt+m] if you are left-handed. To reverse the ºº use of the right and left buttons, press [Alt+m] and then right-click the ºº mouse. After that, the functions are reversed, and all references to "left" ºº should be read as "right" (except, if you want to swap back to a right- ºº handed mouse, the sequence is still [Alt+m], right click). º zÉÍ ¹ Options ÌÍ!»º Options are used on the command line (e.g., "EDDY/A/K") or press [Alt+o]. ºº /A - Do not change setting of "archive" attribute on files copied.
ºº /B - Silence the "beeper". 2ºº /C - EDDY sets the cursor size as it sees fit. /C leaves it unchanged. ºº /D - Include directory sizes in display. $ºº /E - Set EGA monitor to 43-line (or VGA to 50-line) text display mode. ºº /F - Set filename editing. ºº /H - Include files with "hidden" or "system" attributes in the display. ºº /K - Some error and status messages are displayed briefly and then disappear.ºº /K tells EDDY to wait for a key press before clearing the message. ºº /L - List for repeated commands - [^F2] thru [^F7] - starts at current file. ºº /M - Monochrome monitor. Useful with mono monitor + Color Graphics Adapter. ºº /R - RAM editing. LOOK, PATCH, FIND and/or COPY your PC's memory. ºº /U - Use minimum memory required for EDDY. (Only on command line) ºº /W - "Where's That File?". Display directories containing matching file namesºº Mºº /0 puts EDDY in "customizing" mode ºº /9 defines screen size on monitors that EDDY doesn't automatically adjust to.ºº The other "numeric" options are used to control batch mode operations. ºº [PgDn] for information on Batch Operations º É͹ PATCH Data in File, Disk or RAM ÌÍ»º Press [F4] to PATCH. Changes may be entered at the blinking cursor. A 2nd ºº cursor highlights the corresponding byte in the other half of the display. ºº The cursors move in unison, and are controlled by the "arrow" keys. ºº [Tab] toggles hex/ASCII formats; [Sh+Tab] lets you change the toggle key. ºº Mºº Press [Alt+y] if you want to delete all bytes before or after the cursor. If ºº the display is at the end of file, and there is space for more data on the ºº screen, [Alt+z] adds a ^Z (end-of-file) byte to the file, making it longer. ºº Mºº No changes are actually written to disk until you press [Enter] or [^Enter] ºº twice. If you use [^Enter], you will be asked whether you want to update the ºº file's timestamp; [Enter] always updates the timestamp to DOS's date/time. ºº Any time before entering UPDATE mode, you may press [F2] to UNDO the changes.ºº Mºº PATCH works on one display page at a time. To work on data in a different ºº part of the file, press [F3] to move to LOOK mode and position the display asºº required. Then press [F4] to return to PATCH mode and make your changes. ºº [^F4] puts you in PATCH for ALL files (one at a time). ºº Mºº If you PATCH a read-only file, it will still be read-only after the PATCH. ºº Mº É͹ Point-n-Shoot ÌÍ»º You may define commands to be used with certain files. For instance, you ºº might want to use PKZIP to look at the contents of ".ZIP" files, without ºº leaving EDDY. The files and commands are defined in the "EDDY.USE" file. ºº You may also define a default command, to be used when EDDY.USE has no ºº appropriate command. The default may be used anytime, by pressing [F8]. ºº Mºº For example, if EDDY.USE contains the line: !ºº *.ZIP C:\UTIL\PKZIP.EXE -V %1 ºº pressing [Sh+F9] TWICE when the cursor is on a file with the extension ".ZIP"ºº will display the contents of that file (assuming, of course, that you have ºº PKZIP in the UTIL directory). /ºº Mºº Files are defined as usual for DOS, and the commands are similar to .BAT fileºº commands. The full path and extension (i.e., ".EXE" in the example) must be ºº given in the command. There must be at least one space after the extension, ºº and also after the file definition. The replaceable parameter ("%1" in the ºº example) tells EDDY where to put the filename before executing the command. ºº Mºº EDDY.USE must be in a directory defined in your current PATH, the current ºº directory, or (if you have DOS 3.0 or higher) in the same directory that you ºº executed EDDY from. 9º É͹ Data Recovery ÌÍ»º If you have a problem that can't be handled by "quick undelete" methods of ºº other disk utilities, EDDY offers some capabilities to make the job easier...ºº Mºº 1. Set the working directory to the directory which used to contain the fileºº you want to recover, and LOOK at the disk. Press [Alt+w] to display the ºº working directory area on the disk. 'ºº 2. Move the deleted filename (starts with "E5" or "05" hex) to the top, and ºº press [Alt+d] to verify. If you don't find it, press [Alt+n] to move to theºº next cluster of the directory. If there are no more clusters, go to Step 4ºº 3. With the filename at the top of the screen, press [Alt+s], to display ºº the starting cluster of the deleted file. If the data looks as you ºº expected, proceed to Step 5. Otherwise, the cluster has probably been re- ºº used by DOS to store another file. In this case, continue with Step 4. ºº 4. If you need this step, use FIND to locate your data, or press [Alt+u] ºº to search the unallocated clusters for likely-looking data. When you find ºº data you want to recover proceed to the next step. ºº 5. Mark the selected cluster, using [m]. Look at the next cluster. If it ºº looks right, mark it, too. If not, press [Enter] to write the data. ºº 6. Find the next logical cluster, and repeat Step 5. Repeat 5 & 6 as needed.ºº Mºº Your data will be in the "DRIVE.x" file (where "x" is the drive letter). º É͹ RENAME File or Directory ÌÍ»º Mºº To rename a file, just type the new name over the old (when option /F is ON).ºº Mºº Option /F may be turned ON for all files by pressing [Alt+o] and then [f]. ºº Or, option /F may be turned on for just the current file by pressing [Ins]. ºº When option /F is ON, a "." appears between the filename and extension fieldsºº Mºº Note that the filename field and extension fields are separate in the displayºº and must be typed separately. Any character which is valid for a filename, ºº including blanks, may be used. If you type a "." while in the filename field,ºº the cursor will move to the extension field. The filename may not be set to ºº all blanks (although the extension may). $ºº Mºº When a change has been made to the filename or extension, an "*" will appear ºº just to the right of the extension in the display. ºº Mºº If option /F is OFF, renaming is inhibited, and the "Speed Search" feature isºº made available. In this case, typing in the name field tells EDDY to search ºº for the first file which has a name which matches the current file's name, upºº to and including the character you just typed. ºº Mº É͹ FIND and REPLACE ÌÍ»º Mºº To replace occurrences of the FIND string with a new string (the "REPLACE ºº string"), press [Alt+r]. The FIND window will be expanded to allow entry of ºº a REPLACE string in the lower portion of the window. REPLACE strings are ºº entered exactly the same as FIND strings, and may be ASCII and/or hex. ºº Mºº To switch between the two parts of the window, use [Up] and [Down]. ºº Mºº To shrink the window back to its normal FIND-only size, press [Alt+r] again. ºº Mºº If you begin the search with the expanded window on the screen, the REPLACE ºº string will be written over any match found for the FIND string. When you ºº begin the search, you will be asked whether you want EDDY to pause for you ºº to confirm before replacing, or just to go ahead and make the replacement ºº automatically. ºº Mºº If the REPLACE string is shorter than the FIND string (e.g., with a "close" ºº match that includes white space), the REPLACE string will be padded with ºº trailing blanks as required to make the two strings the same length. A ºº REPLACE string may not be longer than its corresponding FIND string. ºº Mº H ³É͹ Sorting Directories ÌÍ»º (More information on commands: [PgDn] ºº You may sort the directory in a variety of sequences for display... ºº [Alt+d]: Sort files by DATE/time [Alt+n]: Sort files by NAME ºº [Alt+e]: Sort files by EXTENSION [Alt+s]: Sort files by SIZE ºº [Alt+h]: Sort files by time (HOUR/min) ºº Mºº The sorted display will show any subdirectories first, followed by the files.ºº Mºº Press [Alt+u] to display the directory UNSORTED, as it is stored on disk. ºº Press [Alt+i] to INVERT the current sort order ºº Mºº You may also sort directories permanently, on disk. To tell EDDY you want ºº this, press [Alt+Sh+d], [Alt+Sh+e], [Alt+Sh+h], [Alt+Sh+n] or [Alt+Sh+s]. Theºº sequence indicator at the bottom of the screen will blink, and the directory ºº will be rewritten to disk when you UPDATE, after any other changes requested.ºº Mºº You can also order the directory in any sequence you like. Press [Alt+F6] toºº mark a file to "Shuffle", move the cursor to the spot you want to put it, andºº press [Alt+F6] again. The sequence indicator will change to a blinking "?". ºº Shuffle as often as you like, then UPDATE to rewrite the directory to disk. ºº Mº CCC

Otherwise... +ºº Mºº If you start the name with a "\", EDDY interprets this as a directory start- ºº ing from the root of the target directory's drive. If there's no starting ºº "\", EDDY adds the name at the end of the target directory path string, and ºº uses that as the new target directory. &ºº Mºº For example: suppose your current target directory is C:\UTIL and the DOS ºº default on D: is D:\WORK. Then, after pressing [Alt+Sh+t], if you enter... ºº ... "\" or ".."the new target will be C:\ ºº ... "\FOO" the new target will be C:\FOO ºº ... "FOO" (or "C:FOO) the new target will be C:\UTIL\FOO ºº ... "D: the new target will be D:\WORK !ºº ... "D:FOO" the new target will be D:\WORK\FOO ºº Mºº If you'd rather select from a graphical tree diagram, [PgUp] for more info. º çÉ͹ TARGET Directory Tree ÌÍ»º Mºº Press [Alt+t] to get a graphical display of the directory tree on the target ºº drive (the one containing the target directory). The target directory will ºº be highlighted and enclosed in " ". The default DOS directory for that ºº drive is shown enclosed in "{ }". If the working directory is on the same ºº drive as the target, it will be enclosed in "® ¯". ºº Mºº Move to directories with the cursor keys, or by pressing the first letter of ºº the name. If more than one directory has the same name, press that letter ºº again to move on. When the directory you want is highlighted, press [Enter].ºº Mºº To select another drive, press [^letter], where [letter] is the drive ID. Theºº first time you select a drive, there'll be a delay while the tree is analyzedºº If you use the DOS Gateway, or update the tree, the delay will recur. ºº Mºº To CREATE a new directory as the target, use the dialog box. Press [Alt+Sh+t]ºº to display the dialog box. [PgDn] for more information on dialog box usage. ºº Mºº If you want to use only the dialog box, press [Alt+t] while the tree is ºº displayed. [Alt+t] will then be treated the same as [Alt+Sh+t]. To reset ºº [Alt+t] to access the tree, press [Alt+t] while the dialog box is displayed. º É͹ Timestamp Filtering ÌÍ»º Press [Alt+q] to specify the date and/or time that a file must have to be ºº included in EDDY's display. When a timestamp filter is used, it is displayedºº in the heading line at the top of the screen. If the filter includes a date ºº value, the sort sequence will be by date; otherwise, sorting is by time only.ºº Mºº When you press [Alt+q], any timestamp already in effect will be reset to all ºº 0's, meaning "no timestamp filtering". You may then enter the timestamp you ºº want to use for selecting files to be displayed. The timestamp begins with a ºº ">", "<" or "=", which means select files with dates/times greater than, lessºº than or equal to the specified timestamp. #ºº Mºº A date of 00/00/00 means that the date will not be used for selecting the ºº files. A time of 00:00 means the time will not be used. If both are zeros, ºº no timestamp filtering is done. -ºº Mºº After setting the timestamp, press [Enter]. If there is an error, the cursor ºº will move to the field which has the error; otherwise, the new timestamp willºº immediately be used to reprocess the working directory, giving a new display.ºº Mºº Some users report that [Alt+q] isn't recognized by EDDY. This appears to be aºº problem with some DOS versions. If you have this problem, turn option /I ON. º É͹ UPDATE - [^Enter] or [Enter]? ÌÍ»º Mºº The choice of [Enter] or [^Enter] affects only the way timestamps are set on ºº files copied or patched. [Enter] tells EDDY to use the normal defaults for ºº timestamps, which are: 6ºº Mºº Files copied - timestamp left unchanged ºº Files patched - timestamp set to current DOS date/time ºº New EDDY.COM when customizing - current DOS date/time ºº Mºº If you press [^Enter], EDDY will normally ask how you want to set timestamps,ºº and will then treat them as you have indicated. ºº Mºº However, if you are using a customized copy of EDDY, the assumption is that ºº you are familiar with the program, and the question will not be asked. In ºº this case, EDDY uses the opposite logic after [^Enter]; i.e., files copied ºº get the current date/time, and files patched keep their old timestamp. ºº Mºº After the UPDATE is complete, or after the current file is patched, timestampºº setting logic reverts to the normal defaults. ºº Mºº Mº ÉÍ ¹ WARNING! ÌÍ »º Mºº Some of the things EDDY can do to your disks are things you shouldn't do if ºº using disk capacity expanders such as Stacker, DoubleDisk, SuperStor, or ºº similar products. Specifically, patching disk sectors (files are OK) and ºº moving or rewriting directories are features likely to cause problems (i.e., ºº your data may disappear!) if used with "drives" of this type. ºº Mºº Therefore, EDDY tries to identify such drives before proceeding with any of ºº these functions. If a drive is identified as being one of these, you will ºº see the message... :ºº "Not supported for this disk" ºº ...and EDDY won't proceed. 2ºº Mºº The first time one of these functions is requested on a drive, if EDDY can't ºº decide automatically whether it's a real drive (some vendors provide details ºº on how to detect their products, and some don't) you will be asked... ºº Is
ºº Mºº Changing directory by pressing [F3], [Alt+w] or [Alt+x] turns option /W OFF.ºº Mº 8 ^ÀÉ͹ WORKING Directory Dialog Box ÌÍ»º [Alt+Sh+w] lets you enter a new working directory path, with or without a ºº filename (which may include wildcards). If a filename is used, only files ºº with matching names will appear in the new working directory display. ºº Mºº If you enter only a drive (e.g., "C:"), the default directory for that drive ºº will become the new working directory. &ºº Mºº If you start the path with a "\", EDDY interprets this as a directory path ºº starting from the root of the current working directory's drive. If there's ºº no initial "\", EDDY adds the path at the end of the current directory path ºº string, and uses that as the new working directory. ºº Mºº For example: suppose your current working directory is C:\UTIL and the DOS ºº default on D: is D:\WORK. Then, after pressing [Alt+Sh+w], if you enter... ºº ... "\" or ".."the new working directory will be C:\ ºº ... "\FOO" the new working directory will be C:\FOO ºº ... "FOO" (or "C:FOO) the new working directory will be C:\UTIL\FOO ºº ... "D: the new working directory will be D:\WORK ºº ... "D:FOO" the new working directory will be D:\WORK\FOO ºº Mºº If you'd rather select from a graphical tree diagram, [PgUp] for more info. º nÅÉ͹ WORKING Directory Tree ÌÍ»º Press [Alt+w] to get a graphical display of the directory tree on the workingºº drive, or press [^\] to select a new working drive. The working directory ºº will be highlighted and enclosed in "® ¯". If the target directory is on ºº the same drive, it will be enclosed in " ". ºº Mºº Move to directories with the cursor keys, or by pressing the first letter of ºº the name. If more than one directory has the same name, press that letter ºº again to move on. When the directory you want is highlighted, press [Enter].ºº Mºº To select a different drive, press [^letter], where [letter] is the drive ID.ºº When drives other than the working drive are displayed, the current DOS ºº default directory for that drive is shown enclosed in "{ }". The first ºº time you select a drive, there'll be a delay while the tree is analyzed. If ºº you use the DOS Gateway, or update the tree structure, the delay will recur. ºº Mºº To change the file specification, use the dialog box. Press [Alt+Sh+w] to ºº display the dialog box. [PgDn] for more information on dialog box usage. ºº Mºº If you want to use only the dialog box, press [Alt+w] while the tree is ºº displayed. [Alt+w] will then be treated the same as [Alt+Sh+w].
