DESCRIPTION
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
How many times have you had information on a floppy disk that you needed for a
specific job? Have you ever wanted to play that interesting game that you
know you have if you could only find it? If you are like me and have a
collection of floppy disks and have wanted a way to keep track of them all and
a quick method of locating any disk - here is the answer. DISKSCAN will
automatically catalog all entries on a floppy, including sub-directories. The
entire operation takes only a few seconds. Catalog those floppies that you
want to locate and next time you need them simply bring up DISKSCAN and in a
couple of keystrokes you know exactly what disk number you assigned to the
floppy you are searching for. Open the drawer that contains that disk number
and you're on your way. Nothing could be simpler. All entries are maintained
in a database for quick retrieval. Reports can be printed in any of 5 sort
orders. Updating is a breeze. Insert the disk you want to catalog. Provide
the disk number that you want to assign and DISKSCAN will do the rest.

LICENSE AGREEMENT/WARRANTY
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
DISKSCAN was written as shareware and its free distribution is encouraged
except for media and handling costs. If you find DISKSCAN helpful the
registration fee is $15.00. This product is NOT freeware. Those who use
DISKSCAN are expected to pay a registration fee. There are no exceptions!
No license is granted allowing modification in any way. All files must be
distributed. DISKSCAN is not guaranteed to meet your requirements or that the
operation will be uninterrupted or error free. You are solely responsible for
the selection of the program to achieve your intended results and for results
actually obtained. This software is provided AS IS.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
MS-DOS/IBM DOS v2.0 or higher with 640k system memory and color/mono graphics
or hercules graphics. Also required is a hard-disk and printer.

LIMITATIONS
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
Maximum number of floppy disks that may be cataloged................. 9999
Maximum number of files in each sub-directory........................ 300

FILES ON DISK
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
The following files are contained on the original DISKSCAN disk and MUST be
transfer unmodified to any new users.

DSINSTAL EXE >> Hard Disk Installation Program
DS CFG >> Configuration File
MASTER DBF >> Data Base
SCANBASE DBF >> Data Base
SN DBF >> Data Base
DS DOC >> Documentation
DS EXE >> Program (DISKSCAN)
SCANRPT FRM >> Report Format
ATTR NTX >> Attribute Index
DDATE NTX >> Date Index
DSKNAM NTX >> Diskname Index
FILNAM NTX >> Filename Index
FLOPNUM NTX >> Floppy Number Index
SN NTX >> Serial Number Index

INSTALLATION
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
DISKSCAN is NOT designed to operate on a floppy-based system. The program must
have access to its files during operation and in a floppy based system, with
only one (1) drive, when the disk is removed you also remove access to those
files. To use DISKSCANs' full capability you must install to a hard disk!

To install DISKSCAN to your hard disk proceed as follows:
1) Place the original DISKSCAN disk into drive "A".
2) Type A:DSINSTAL - and respond to the following questions.

ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ»

The installation utility will:
1) Create a DISKSCAN subdirectory on the specified drive.
2) Copy the necessary files from drive 'A'.
3) Create a START.BAT file based upon the answer to the questions and
put the file in the DISKSCAN directory.
An example of the START.BAT file is outlined below:

ECHO OFF ** We don't want to view each command.
SET DISKSCAN=C:\DISKSCAN ** DISKSCAN looks here for files.
SET COLOR=COLOR ** Set either Color/Mono {default=Color}.
CD C:\DISKSCAN ** Change default directory.
DS ** Execute program.
SET COLOR= ** Clear Environment String.
SET DISKSCAN= ** Clear Environment String.
CD\ ** Return to Root Directory.
CLS ** Clear Screen.

NOTE: DISKSCAN uses several files at once. Since DOS has a limit on the number
of files that may be opened it is imperative that you have a file in your root
directory named "CONFIG.SYS". The contents of this file should be something
like the following:

Files=20
Buffers=30

An error message similar to the following will be given if no config.sys file
can be found or the existing one does not contain statements similar to those
above:
Proc SETNDX line 5, open error C:\DISKSCAN\DSKNAM.NTX (4) Retry? (Y/N)
{refer to your DOS manual for help with the CONFIG.SYS file.}

When DISKSCAN is delivered the database should be empty with all counters in
the status screen set to "0". If this is not the case then you most likely
have received a copy of another database. Use the ZAP function from the
Utility Menu to clear your database. {Ref Utility Menu}.

MAIN MENU CHOICES
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

QUIT >> Exits DISKSCAN and returns to DOS.

LOAD >> Scans the drive specified and returns all files found to a
temporary database where the user may view them prior to
actually putting them into the master list. If your floppy
contains sub-directories they will be searched for you. Each
time a sub-directory is scanned its contents are displayed
on screen. If you choose not to store the contents of any
given directory simply respond with 'N' when asked to store
the information in the database. If the floppy number you
entered is found you are given a chance to view and/or change it.
See USER PROMPT in the Utility Menu section.

ERASE >> Removes the specified floppy number and its files.

REPORT >> Allows the user to specify the sort order for viewing.
You also perform searches of your database from this area.

VIEW >> Allows the user to browse the database beginning with
any specific floppy number. See View Screens.

DRIVE >> Designates to DISKSCAN what drive to load from.
Enter either 'A','B','C' or whatever drive you have.

OS >> Allows the user, if you have enough memory, to exit to
the operating system and return. Do NOT execute any memory
resident programs since memory will be changed when you leave
DISKSCAN. This function is handy for a quick check of any
specified floppy etc, using the 'DIR' command of DOS.
A large amount of memory is required for this function!

STATUS SCREEN
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
The Status Screen displays information such as:
1) What is the last number that was entered for a floppy number.
2) What is the highest floppy number in the database.
3) How many floppies in the database.
4) How many filenames in the database.
5) How many sub-directories in the database.
Also displayed is the drive that will be searched and the directory that you
have installed DISKSCAN to.

The final statement relates to whether DISKSCAN should ask the user for
confirmation each time a directory is scanned. The default is "Yes". If you
change the default to "No" then each time you scan a directory DISKSCAN will
store all files without asking for permission or displaying them first. This
can be useful if you want to load several floppies and don't want to be
bothered to verify each of them.
See USER PROMPT in the Utility Menu section.

SETUP >> Allows the user to change the printer setup string.

ZAP >> Completely erases the database and resets counters.
The system password is required to use this function.

INDEX >> Although most likely not necessary, this function will
re-create all indexes in the event something has caused
them to become corrupt. If you are having trouble in
locating entries that you are certain are in the master
database then use this function and re-create the indexes
and try again.

PASSWORD >> This option allows the user to change DISKSCAN's password.
When DISKSCAN is first delivered the password is set to
the program name (DISKSCAN). The password is required when
the user wishes to either ZAP the entire database or alter
the printer setup strings. To change the password you must
know the previous password and also must enter the new one
twice as a verification process.

USER >> This option changes whether or not the user is asked to verify
a 'LOAD'. If you specify 'Yes' then DISKSCAN will display the
contents of each directory scan and ask for your confirmation
prior to putting them into the database. If you change this to
'No' then DISKSCAN will not display or ask for confirmation.
The default is 'Yes'.

COMPRESS >> When entries are ERASED they are not completely remove.
This function will completely remove all previously ERASED
files thus reducing the size of the database. If no files
have been erased then this function will not have any effect.
After the COMPRESS is completed all indexes are reworked
in order to assure the user that everything is current.
This function may take a couple of minutes to complete depending
upon system speed and database size.
PRINTER SETUP
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

Please read this section completely before attempting to change your printer
setup. Refer to your printer manual for the proper codes to use.
The setup of your printer is usually done once, unless you change printers.
However, before changing the printer setup strings it is recommended that you
attempt to print a report first using the default settings.

In order to setup the printer you must provide DISKSCANs password which is
defaulted to DISKSCAN when you receive your diskette. If you have changed this
password then enter the new password. You will not be able to alter printer
setup codes without the password so do not forget what you have set.

From the MAIN Menu enter a 'U' (no quotes) for UTILITY Menu. Within the
Utility Menu are several options. Enter 'S' (no quotes) to view/change your
printer setup strings. When asked for a password enter DISKSCANs password. The
default printer codes are that of an IBM graphics printer (IBM PROPRINTER).

In order for your printer to perform properly, DISKSCAN needs to know what
characters to send, expressed in their DECIMAL ASCII values, prior to printing
the reports on the REPORT menu.

1) 16 Characters Per Inch (Compressed Print)
2) 12 Characters Per Inch (May be smaller but no larger)
3) 10 Characters Per Inch (Normal Print)

Item #1 above is currently the only print size that is used in this version of
DISKSCAN.

When DISKSCAN is distributed its default settings are already installed and
it's recommended that you try the defaults first before you change things. If
they don't function for your printer then refer to your printer manual and
make the changes as required. Don't panic if you have problems. The fields
may be changed as many times as you wish until you have the correct printer
response. DISKSCAN will not allow you to completely remove these character
strings, however, if necessary characters such as Ascii (0) may be used
in place of complete erasure. An example of an DECIMAL ASCII value is:
68,73,83,75,83,67,65,78 which is DISKSCAN spelled in ASCII (Decimal).

Be sure you use the DECIMAL ASCII values, SEPARATED BY COMMAS, and not the
Hex-Decimal or Binary values, or DISKSCAN will not function properly. The
codes necessary to control your printer are usually found in your printer
manual. No graphics are used in the reports, therefore if your printer does
not support graphics it should still function with DISKSCAN.
Note: By adding the correct codes after the print size codes you could set
your printer up for (italics/bold/emphasized) etc. (Just a hint).

The above screen shows the available choice of SORT and the following page
outlines each choice in more detail.
NUMERIC >> Data is sorted by floppy number with the lowest number first.

FILENAME >> Data is sorted by filename in alphabetical order.

ATTR >> Data is sorted by file attributes in alphabetical order.

CREATE >> Data is sorted by file creation date.

DISKNAME >> Data is sorted by diskname in alphabetical order.

Note: In each of the above sort orders you are given the option of specifying
a starting point. In the case of the NUMERIC sort order the starting point
would be any given floppy number. If that number is located then DISKSCAN
would allow viewing of the database beginning with that number. If the number
is not found, viewing would start at the beginning of the list.

In the case of FILENAME the starting point is entered as follows. Say for
example you were searching for all the AUTOEXEC.BAT files, you could enter the
entire name of "AUTOEXEC.BAT" as the starting point or you could just enter
"AUTO" and DISKSCAN would stop at the first file that started with the word
"AUTO". If the starting point is not found then DISKSCAN will start at the
beginning of the file.

The ATTR (attribute) and DISKNAME functions work exactly like the FILENAME
function.

The DATE function is similar to FILENAME and ATTR except that when you specify
a starting date, if the date is not found then DISKSCAN will stop at the
nearest date to it.

The various sort orders are all maintained by indexes and as a result are very
fast in performing the sort.

Note that once you leave the REPORTS menu the sort order reverts back to the
original of NUMERIC.

If output is directed to the printer, the report will begin at the top of the
list and will ignore any specified starting point. The sort order will be as
specified.
VIEW SCREENS
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
The screens below are a sample of the standard VIEW screen that is used
throughout DISKSCAN when viewing of the database is requested.

The top screen shows the view immediately upon entering the screen and the
bottom view shows what is available when you use a CTRL-(right cursor) to view
1 column to the right. The column that is off screen (to the right) displays
the path that was used to acquire the file shown. If you do not scan any
floppy disks that have sub-directories on them then all files displayed will
be from "A:\".

MISC Helps
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
When you are doing a "LOAD" from the main menu and DISKSCAN reports that the
specified floppy already exists you are given the chance to view it and
replace existing files with new ones. If you respond 'Y' to the prompt to
update then any existing files on the specified floppy number are erased from
the database and the disk(ette) in the scan drive is scanned and its contents
are stored in the database. This makes updating floppies that had been
previously entered a simple task of inserting the disk in the drive and
entering the disk number and name.

Whenever DISKSCAN asks if the printer is ready, the user should verify that
the printer is turned ON and ON-LINE. DISKSCAN will perform its own check and
if the test fails a warning message will be given and DISKSCAN will stop and
wait for the user to press any key. At this point you should repair the
printer problem if possible or press {ESC} and the program will abort the
printout. Note that once a printout starts the only way to cancel it is with
the ALT-C key combination.

The ALT-C key combination will abort DISKSCAN and if you respond 'N' to the
Continue ? prompt at the top of the screen you will be returned immediately to
the operating system. This is NOT the recommended way to exit the program. In
order to eliminate the destruction or damage of the database you are required
to leave gracefully via the main menu. There are several areas where [ALT-C]
has been turned off to help prevent damage to critical files during updates.
DO NOT REBOOT DURING EXECUTION AS A NORMAL MEANS OF EXITING or you may
permanently damage DISKSCAN critical files.

DISKSCAN will search the specified drive returning ALL files in the root
directory and all files in ALL SUB-DIRECTORIES on the disk including
hidden/system/read-only and archive files. If its out there DISKSCAN will find
it.

DISKSCAN will prompt the user for permission before it begins a lengthy search
of a hard disk. DISKSCAN always searches the root directory first. If any
subdirectories are found and you are scanning any drive beyond 'B' then you
will be asked before a lengthy search is started through all subdirectories.
If you respond 'N' then the search is cancelled and you are returned to the
main menu keeping only what was found in the root directory. If you respond
'Y' the program will search all subs found. Be cautioned that once a search of
a hard disk is started it should not be stopped. DO NOT ABORT or you may
corrupt your data base.

ONE FINAL NOTE
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
DISKSCAN is written in dBASEIII Plus and compiled with CLIPPER, products of
ASHTON TATE and NANTUCKET respectively. However, DISKSCAN is stand-a-lone
software that does not require the use of either dBASE or Clipper software.
The program 'DS.EXE' is compiled and is safe from modifications. The database
files *.DBF and report format file of *.FMT are accessible from dBASE itself
and many other dBASE clones. Hackers are urged to avoid the temptation to
modify any of the files that are on the DISKSCAN disk. The author assumes no
liability for modifications made and will not under any circumstances replace
altered files if changes are intentionally made. PLEASE DO NOT EXPERIMENT !!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
