Introduction
Tired of trying to find a disk because you were to rushed (in my
case, lazy) to do a proper job of labeling it? Can't fit all those
filenames on it anyway? Need to distribute a large number of
disks, or just one and make sure it gets back to you? Then LABELER
is just the thing for you.
LABELER is a menu driven utility that will produce high quality
disk labels with a minimum of effort.
Registration Information
LABELER is distributed as shareware, which means if you've
downloaded it from a bulletin board or obtained it from a friend,
you can try it out before you decide whether you'd like to keep it.
Like all shareware, if you decide to keep LABELER, you must pay a
registration fee.
LABELER is copyrighted program protected by both U.S. and
international copyright law. You are authorized to use it without
charge for a limited period of time (not to exceed 30 days). After
this time you must register and pay for LABELER to continue using
it.
License Agreement
(1) The LABELER program and all other programs and documentation
distributed or shipped with it are copyrighted works protected by
U.S and international copyright law.
(2) LABELER is a commercial software package. It is not free nor
in the public domain.
(3) If you wish to use LABELER after the 30 day period, you must
register and pay for LABELER. If you decide not to use LABELER you
must remove it from your computer, although you are allowed to keep
copies to pass along to others.
(4) You may use your registered copy of LABELER on a single
computer. You may use LABELER on more than one computer provided
there is no possibility of LABELER running on more than one machine
at a time.
(5) You may copy LABELER for archival purposes and to distribute
to others. If you give copies to others, please ensure that they
get all of the distributed files.
(6) You may not distribute LABELER other than through individual
copies passed to friends and associates. Specifically, you may not
place LABELER in any commercial library without express written
consent by Guardian Software.
(7) If you do not agree with the terms and conditions of this
License you do not have permission from Guardian Software to use
LABELER and must remove it from your computer.
LABELER Features
- Produces labels on several standard size one-up tractor fed
labels. (And with version 5.30 on sheets)
- Add or redefine your own labels (up to 15 total sizes).
- Uses any one of your printer ports.
- Print a batch of labels for one disk with a single command.
- Modify the printer drivers to use your needs.
Installing LABELER
Your LABELER disk (LABELER.ZIP file if downloaded from a BBS) that
you received should contain the following files.
LABELER.EXE - Program Executable File
LABELER.DOC - Program Documentation
LABELER.HST - History of Revisions
LBL530.ZIP - Authorized BBS upload file
(other).DRV - Printer driver files (varies)
To install on a hard drive copy the above file(s) to the
hard drive in a subdirectory that is referenced by the path.
Using LABELER
LABELER now sports a sopisticated (easy with Turbo Vision) user
interface. To activate a menu item, all you need do is click on
it with the left mouse button, or press the Alt key and the high-
lighted letter of the menu item. All dialog boxes can be canceled
just by pressing the ESCape key or clicking on the small box in the
upper left hand corner of the box. Navigating around inside the
dialog box can be a bit trickier. To move from item to item
you must use the TAB (shift-TAB to go backwards), hold the Alt key
press the highlighted Letter key or click on the place you want to go.
Be careful, pressing the ENTER key will always press a pushbutton.
This can be handy at times (ie: enter a Title on the Title line in the
PRINT dialog box then pressing ENTER will press the print button.
This allows you to generate lots of different labels very quickly,
just insert the disk, type the name, press ENTER and repeat.
The place you'll spend most all of your time is in the Print
Dialog Box. The Title line contains the text that will show as the
Title on your diskette label. Copies tells how many copies of the
label to print. The two lines above and below the 'Dividers' have
the text that can replace the dashes separating the three sections
of the diskette label. If you desire to just have the dashed lines,
just leave them blank and LABELER will do that for you. Drive is the
drive that is selected for reading, size is the label definition you
desire to use, port is your printer port number, margin is the number
of spaces to print before each line, this moves the whole label over.
Margin allows to print on labels that are more than one column
wide. The SAVE button will write all the information on this form
back into the LABELER.EXE file, so that they will become the new
startup defaults. The PRINT button prints the label. The SKIP button
will skip past a label that has already been written on. The EJECT button
will make the printer spit out the sheet of labels. LOAD will do one line
feed. The most important use of skip, eject and load is in Laser or
DeskJet printers. The LINES entry will tell how many 1/12" line feeds
pushing the LOAD button will perform. Usually this will be 6-7 or 19-20
depending on which end of the sheet is inserted first. If you print just
one label and eject the page, the next time you will have to do a skip
then print a label to skip over the already printed area. Easy, but to
get to the next column of labels you must feed the page back in and set
the margin to about 80 then print the labels. The third column over
uses a margin setting of about 160. But, because the printers usually
have a larger right margin, the last few letters can be lost. To get
better results on the third column, feed the sheet in upside/down and
treat it as the first column. Don't forget to reset LINES before LOADing
the sheet of labels.
Setup Printer
Allows you to enter printer setup codes into LABELER. The LOAD
button will open another box that will show you a list of
predefined printer driver files that can be loaded into LABELER.
The SAVE button will write the information into the LABELER.EXE
file, to become the new defaults. If you press OK then the printer
changes take effect, but when you restart the program, the printer
will be reset back to its previous settings. CANCEL causes no
changes to take place.
Configure Labels
With this screen, you can change sizes and layout of the labels.
WRAP directs the program to generate a wrap-around label title (for
3 disk labels). INVert causes the Title to appear on the bottom
a a label vice the top. DouBLe causes the Title to printed
double-width. ROWS and COLumnS is a count of the rows and columns
of filenames that can fit on a label. FILL is the number of spaces
between columns. FEED is the number of line-feeds (1/12th inch)
needed to get to the top of the next label. If you are going to
experiment, use paper to test your changes. It's cheaper.
Reg Form
This prints out the mail in registration form, after ensuring
your printer is ready.
Register
After you send in your registration form, you will receive a card
stating the serial number and name to type into the REGISTER box.
The name must be typed exactly as it appears on the card. This
doesn't activate any additional or secret options, but will provide
you with that warm feeling associated with doing right. This
serial number and name combination will be good for any further
releases of LABELER.
Printer Driver Format
The printer driver files are simple text files. The only
difficult thing would be trying to duplicate the 1st line. The
simplest way would be to copy from another file into the one you
are making. After that, the information is entered in the same
order as requested by the dialog box. I.E. Printer, Initializtion
string, Line Spacing set to 1/12th inch, title on, title off, ....
Each decimal code is separated by a semicolon and each item ends
with two semicolons.
The title on and off allows you to get fancy with bold, italic,
or different printer fonts on the title line. The graphics is to
setup to send 8 bytes of 8 bit graphics data to the printer.
