TITLE : Installing Paradox on a LANtastic Network

These notes are general tips on using Borland's Paradox with
Artisoft's Lantastic Network. Borland has not done extensive
testing on Lantastic. However, a number of users are
successfully running Paradox on Lantastic Networks.

Before you install Paradox on a LANtastic network, you must of
course have the LANtastic network properly installed. That
should be covered in your LANtastic manuals. Paradox will be
installed on a server, which should have a C: drive. Finally,
LANtastic should be running and you should be logged in as the
"manager" (a.k.a. the network supervisor).

To get LANtastic ready for Paradox installation, you must create
a directory to house your "PARADOX.NET" file. This directory
will also be the shared data directory, and should be called

\PDOXDATA

Since \PDOXDATA will be your shared directory, all users should
have all rights to this directory.

To create \PDOXDATA, go to your root directory on your C: drive;
then type MD PDOXDATA.

You now have a \PDOXDATA directory.

To get LANtastic to work properly with Paradox, you must do the
following:

1. Assuming that you're logged in as the manager and are at the
DOS prompt, load the NET_MGR.EXE program supplied by LANtastic.
This program will allow you to map a share-name to the
C:\PDOXDATA directory.

2. When the NET_MGR loads, choose the "Network access
information" choice from the menu. You will then get a list of
your current share-names and directories to which they are
linked.

3. Press the [Ins] key on your keyboard to add a new share-name.
You will then be prompted for the "...name of the link directory
of @Device."

4. Type in PDOXDATA and press [Enter]. You will then be returned
to the list of current share-names.

5. Select the PDOXDATA choice and press [Enter]. You will again
get a menu of choices, of which one will be "Link
path."

6. Choose this option and type in C:\PDOXDATA; press [Enter].
Now press [Esc] until you are back at the DOS prompt.

Now you need to make some minor changes to your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Using a text editor (edlin or an equivalent), add the following
line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

NET USE E: \\SERVER1\PDOXDATA

NOTE: You must place the name you gave to your file server when
you installed LANtastic in place of "SERVER1."

Now install Paradox according to the directions in the Paradox
manuals:

1. Log onto the C: drive of the file server as manager. (Make
sure you are in the root directory).

2. Place your "Installation/Sample Tables" disk into A: drive;
type A:INSTALL.

3. When Paradox asks you if you are installing on a network,
answer YES.

4. Choose OTHER (number 7) for network type.

5. Type in E: for location of your network control file.

6. Continue with the installation as instructed by the Paradox
manuals.

Once you have finished installing Paradox, go to the \PDOX35 (or,
if you are installing Paradox 3, to \PARADOX3) directory and use
the DOS ATTRIB command to make all files except PARADOX.SOM (or
PARADOX3.SOM if you are installing Paradox 3) read-only:

1. Type ATTRIB +R *.*

2. If you are installing Paradox 3.5, type ATTRIB -R PARADOX.SOM;
if you are installing Paradox 3.0, type ATTRIB -R PARADOX3.SOM.

Finally, when you run Paradox, load it with the -SHARE option:
type PARADOX -SHARE (if you are using Paradox 3, PARADOX3 -
SHARE). This lets Paradox know that you want it to treat the
local (C:) drive as a network drive. This is necessary, since
this is a non-dedicated network. Be sure to play the CUSTOM
script for each user to specify their username and the location
of their private directory.

Special attention should be given the Paradox Network
Administrator's Guide. The first two chapters of this guide are
critical to Paradox use on any network. Also of importance is
the chapter titled "Configuration", and the "Additional Networks"
subsection of the "Other Networks" chapter.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
