TITLE : What is Paradox SE?

Paradox SE is a special edition of the Paradox database designed
and priced expressly for student, home, and small business users.
The SE version is an introductory version of Paradox, simplified
for new users of databases who want the capabilities of the top-
rated database in the industry. Paradox SE is a relational
database that includes Query-by Example (QBE) for easy data
access, as well as integrated forms, reports and graphics, making
it ideal for first time database owners. With Paradox SE, users
can easily track customers and clients, print mailing labels and
produce form letters.

The new Paradox SE documentation is the best selling book, "The
ABC's of Paradox". This documentation is designed to quickly
make users productive with Paradox SE.

System requirements needed to run Paradox SE are 512K base RAM
Free and a hard disk. Like all Borland products, Paradox SE
comes with free technical support. It is designed as a Single
User program. The following is a list of major features:

Query-By-Example
Query-by-Example is a powerful tool that lets you ask a wide
range of questions about your databases without having to learn a
programming language. You can use QBE to:

* Find or select information from a table.

* Combine information from more than one table.

* Perform calculations on the data in a table.

* Insert new data in a table or delete old data.

* Define groups and sets of information on which to perform
calculations and comparisons.

Integrated Forms
Paradox SE allows you to easily design custom relational forms to
display your data. With Paradox SE's forms you can:

* Display multiple records per form.

* Display information from multiple tables per form.

* Display your data in a wide variety of colors
(requires a color monitor).

* Automatically maintain relational integrity between
tables.

* Perform complex calculations.

* Create a standard form for any table with a single key
press.

Integrated Reports
With Paradox SE, you can easily design custom relational reports.
With reports you can:

* Sort and group data.

* Calculate fields and totals.

* Enter titles and headings.

* Arrange your data in an almost infinite variety of
formats including mailing labels, and form letters.

* Print information from multiple tables.

* Print a standard report for any table with a single
key press.

Graphics
Paradox SE allows you to effectively analyze and display your
information in graphs. With Paradox SE's graphics you can:

* Produce Pie, Line, Bar, Stack Bar, X-Y and other
graphs.

* Easily modify the graph type, layout, and colors to
produce exactly the graph you want.

* If you have a graphics printer or plotter, you can
print your graphs.

* Display graphs for any table with a single key press.

Cross Tabulation
Cross Tabulation allows you to transform any table into a
'crosstab' table suitable for graphing and analysis. With a
single key press, a table can be cross tabulated.

Validity Checks
Without programming, validity checks let you set requirements and
default values for entries in a field. It also lets you look up
and fill in values from another table.

Storage Capacities
Up to the limits of space on a disk, a single table can contain
up to:

* 262 million characters (bytes)

* 255 fields with up to 255 characters each.

Paradox SE differs from Paradox 3.5 in some ways. The following
are available in Paradox 3.5 but not available in Paradox SE:
VROOMM (tm) Memory Management, connectivity to Networks and SQL
databases, full documentation for the Paradox Application
Language (PAL), and the use of PAL functions within the form and
report generators. The Paradox 3.5 applications generator,
Personal Programmer, are also not available in SE. Paradox SE is
not able to directly Import/Export Quattro Pro files, however it
will Import/Export Quattro files (Quattro Pro on the other hand
can read and write Paradox SE files.)

Paradox 3.5 incorporates the application of VROOMM (tm) (Virtual
Runtime Object Oriented Memory Management) technology allowing it
to run faster while requiring less memory (depending on equipment

and configuration), thereby leaving more memory for your network
drivers, your applications, and/or your data. It also can be
configured to run in protected mode on a 80286, 80386, or 80486
computer if the system has more than 1MB of RAM.

Paradox 3.5 also has full support for the Paradox Application
Language, including the Data Entry Toolkit procedure library and
sample applications. Paradox 3.5 allows up to 9 tables to be
embedded in a single master form (up from 5 embedded tables in
version SE).

Paradox 3.5 uses "incremental menus". If any menu has more than
one choice with the same starting letter, typing the second,
third and successive letters of the choice you want will select
the item with the minimum number of keystrokes.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
