PMPHONE is FREEWARE!
PMPHONE is a simple dedicated telephone dialer/database. This version is
a 32 bit app compiled with C++ for OS/2 by Borland. This freeware version is
limited to 50 records. It was written mostly as part of my on going self ed-
ucation of the OS/2 system and the C language.
PMPHONE is installed by simply copying the pmphone.exe file to any diret-
ory and using a template to put it on the desktop. Alternately, you could
use the migration utility to put it on the desktop or run it from the command
line.
When PMPHONE is ran for the first time it creates 2 extra files in the
directory it was copied to. It creates pmphone.dat which is a data file that
will hold all the phone numbers, names, and addresses you enter. It also
creates pmphone.ini which will hold any set-up data and the screen position
of the program when it is terminated.
When you activate PMPHONE for the first time, the list box on the main
window is empty. You should first click on Set Up on the menu bar and con-
figure it for your desktop. Only two things to choose from. Set your com
port and check the check box if you have a rotary dial phone. Pulse dial is
the default setting. If you are not sure what com port your modem is on
just keep trying until you get it. It will just shut down with a warning
message if the wrong com port is chosen. After completing the set up then
press the SAVE button to save it to pmphone.ini.
Phone numbers ( records ) can be added by pressing the ADD button at the
bottom of the programs main window. Type in a name and a phone number. You
also can type in an address or additional information in the third field.
When you are done press the OK button to save or the CANCEL button to cancel.
You must put something in the name and phone number fields to save a record
but you don't have to put anything in the address field.
There are also DELETE and DIAL buttons on the bottom. If I really have
to tell you what these are for then you need to go back to DOS or Nintendo.
Just highlight the selection you want with the mouse and do what comes al-
most naturally. Selections can also be dialed by double clicking directly on
the selection you want.
If you use Pulse dial you could pick the phone before you dial but ( at
least on my phone ) with Rotary dial you must let it finish dialing before
you pick up the phone. With Pulse dial you can click the OK pushbutton as
soon as it finishes dialing ( if you have the phone off the hook ) or wait
until the party answers. With Rotary dial you MAY have to wait until the
party answers. Experiment and find out. It seems to vary on some systems.
On the Utils menu selection you'll find selections to View, Edit, or Save
all your records in an ascii file. These seem self explanatory so I won't
elaborate.
The Find selection on the menu bar is a search utility. Activate it,
choose what field you want to search ( default is Name ), check case sen-
sitive if you want it, then enter what you want to search for. You can enter
one letter ( or numbers ) or a whole phrase. Then press the OK button to
start a search. It will ( one at a time ) show you every record that it
finds that has a match to the entry you made. You can press the CONTINUE
button after it locates a match to continue the search or the QUIT button
when you find the record you are looking for.
The ABOUT selection on the menu bar is simply a small list of the features
in PMPHONE and a little begging for money ( for the commercial version which
can save up to 200 records ) to make me rich.
