Orchid ProDesigner IIs Series OS/2 2.0 Display Driver
Installation Instructions
6/04/92
Beta Version .9

Enclosed are Orchid's latest ProDesigner IIs series IBM OS/2 2.0 Display
drivers.

I. PREPARATION

STEP #1: Create a DOS boot up disk. Include an editor of some type on the disk.

STEP #2: Make sure you have the latest release of VSVGA.SYS. You can download
this file from Compuserve in LIB 17 of the CIS I Forum.

STEP #3: Verify your system's functionality. You can do this by testing the
standard IBM VGA display driver on your applications before installing
Orchid's display driver.

II. INSTALLATION

Drivers that can handle 70Hz are not available now. When they become
available, they will be placed on Compuserve and in our BBS(510-683-0323).

STEP #1: Select one of the following resolution/refresh rates combination
on your ProDesigner IIs:

800x600, set your vertical refresh rate to 56Hz or 60Hz.
SWITCH 1 OFF & SWITCH 2 OFF = 60Hz (UP, UP) or
SWITCH 1 ON & SWITCH 2 OFF = 56Hz (DOWN, UP)

1024x768, set your vertical refresh rate to 45Hz or 60Hz.
SWITCH 1 OFF & SWITCH 2 OFF = 60Hz (UP, UP) or
SWITCH 1 ON & SWITCH 2 OFF = 45Hz (DOWN, UP)

STEP #2: Boot the system.

If you don't have a picture or your picture is out of sync, reboot
the system using a DOS disk. Change to the \OS2 subdirectory and
run SVGA.EXE using the commandline parameter ON.

Example:
>svga on

This results is the creation, in the current subdirectory (\os2),
of a video parameter file called SVGADATA.PMI. Please be sure this
file exists before continuing.

STEP #3: Create a subdirectory called ORCHID and copy one of our drivers into
the ORCHID subdirectory and rename it to DISPLAY.DLL.

Example for the 800x16 driver:
>md orchid
>cd orchid
>copy /b a:800x16.dll display.dll

STEP #4: Use a text editor and modify the LIBPATH statement in the OS/2 2.0
CONFIG.SYS to place the ORCHID subdirectory in the LIBPATH. It should
be placed before any other LIBPATH entries.

Example:

LIBPATH=.;C:\123G;C:\OS2\DLL;C:\OS2\MDOS;C:\;C:\OS2\APPS\DLL;

should be changed to

LIBPATH=c:\orchid;.;C:\123G;C:\OS2\DLL;C:\OS2\MDOS;C:\;C:\OS2\APPS\DLL;

STEP #5: Reboot the system.

III. CHANGING RESOLUTIONS

1) Reboot your system with a DOS disk.

2) Copy one of our drivers into our ORCHID subdirectory and rename it
to DISPLAY.DLL.

EXAMPLE:
>Copy /b a:1024x256.dll display.dll

3) Reboot in OS/2.

IV. TROUBLESHOOTING

Point #1:
In some cases, after boot up, some or all ICONs on the desktop or in a
window are not visible. You can use one of the following suggestions:

1) Use the scroll bars at the right and bottom edges of the window to bring
the ICONs into view.

2) Or, in a window, press the right mouse button and select ARRANGE with the
left mouse button. This action will set the ICONs into view.

Point #2:
When opening some applications under OS/2, the screen may not be completely
visible. Use the following suggestion:

1) Press CONTROL-ESCAPE and bring up the TASK LIST WINDOW. Using the left
mouse button, highlight the application name, then use the right mouse
button to bring up a menu. From this menu, select tile or cascade and the
full screen of the application will then be visible.

Point #3:
If by chance you have tried everything and still can't get OS/2 to boot up
properly with our drivers, do the following to get back to the default mode:

1) Boot up with your DOS diskette.

2) Go into the ORCHID subdirectory and delete DISPLAY.DLL.

3) Reboot the system.

6) Please send us a problem report of your system.

V. PROBLEM REPORTS

This effort is the first release of the driver. While every effort has been
made to insure it is error free, no guarantee is made that this is the
case. As problems are found and fixed, the new drivers will be uploaded here
as soon as possible.

If you wish to report a problem you may do so by generating a text file with
the following pertinent information:

System description
(CPU, BIOS version, systemboard memory, other installed hardware)

ProDesigner II adapter description
(include BIOS version, hardware revision level, switch [ISA],
configuration register [EISA], or POS settings [Micro Channel],
resolution of driver being used, date & time stamp of driver)

OS/2 configuration
(copy of CONFIG.SYS file)

System or application software in use when problem symptoms appeared
(name, version, configuration)

Problem description
(symptoms)

Steps necessary to reproduce problem symptoms

Daytime phone number with a best time to call in case further
information is needed

Please place the above information into a text file - it can be zipped. Send
file to [Orchid] 76467,1424 using CIS EMAIL.

Orchid's technical support staff is not prepared, at this time, to handle
OS/2 2.0 drivers calls.Our BBS (510-683-0323) is open 24 hours a day and
has our latest and greatest drivers.

Thank you for your patronage and happy computing.
