Release 1.5 - May 23, 1990
Welcome to XChange Fax/LAN! XChange Fax/LAN is a powerful and
comprehensive fax utility product. You can use it to integrate fax capability
into any of your current applications or to simply access your fax board from
the DOS command line.
This document is short, simple, and sweet. It tells you what you need to
use XChange Fax/LAN. It does not give ALL the technical details or complete
specifications. In order to get ALL the goodies, we want you to purchase
XChange Fax/LAN. Information about product pricing is at the end of this
WHAT GOOD IS XCHANGE FAX/LAN?
Any person or company which currently sends outgoing faxes can benefit by
using XChange Fax/LAN. All you need is an Intel, CAS compatible, or Hayes JT
Fax 9600B fax board for your PC and the XChange Fax/LAN software. You can
then send faxes directly from your application or from the DOS command line.
The actual sending of the fax occurs in the background and does not affect
what you are doing in the foreground.
The most attractive feature of XChange Fax/LAN concerns network users.
If you have a network, ANY network (i.e. Novell, 3Com, etc.), then you only
need to purchase ONE fax board. ALL NETWORK USERS AUTOMATICALLY HAVE ACCESS
TO THAT ONE FAX BOARD! This is a significant cost justification for XChange
The features and options of XChange Fax/LAN are many. For example, you
can schedule faxes to be sent in the future. You can send one or more files
to one or more groups of people. You can use your fax card to send any kind
of data file to another fax card, just like a modem.
Best of all, XChange Fax/LAN is extremely easy to operate. You don't
need to use all the features when you first begin using the software. As your
needs change, XChange Fax/LAN will provide the power you need. You can even
get "C" source code to fully and seamlessly integrate fax capabilities into
WHAT IS THE BAD NEWS?
Most people are skeptical about computer software living up to its
promises these days. For that reason, we're going to point out the "bad"
things about XChange Fax/LAN up front. Then you will know whether it is the
product for you or not.
XChange Fax/LAN requires that you have a fax board to operate. Version
1.5 does not currently receive incoming faxes to your workstation. Instead
incoming faxes are received on the "fax server" which automatically handles
them in the background using the software supplied with your fax board. The
"fax server" with the fax board does not have to be a dedicated fax server.
XChange Fax/LAN has a limit of 100 faxes which can be active at any one point
in time. (As those faxes are sent, their place becomes available for use
again.) The Hayes JT Fax 9600B hardware/software does not support all the
features of XChange Fax/LAN. (The Intel and all CAS compatible boards do
support 100% of the XChange Fax/LAN features.) XChange Fax/LAN takes up 9K of
memory. (It can be uninstalled at any time.) In order to fully utilize
XChange Fax/LAN, it is best to purchase the complete package.
As you can see, most of the disadvantages of XChange Fax/LAN are minor
considering the advantages.
XChange Fax/LAN requires the following hardware:
- an IBM PC or close compatible
- a CAS compatible FAX card or Hayes JT Fax 9600B FAX card (CAS
compatible FAX cards include Intel Connection CoProcessor and
SpectraFAX Personal Link.)
XChange Fax/LAN requires the following software:
- Fax board driver software (always provided with your hardware)
- XChange Fax/LAN programs
- DOS Version 3.0 or above
HOW TO INSTALL XChange Fax/LAN
The name of the original XChange Fax/LAN file being distributed by
Commtech is XFAX15.ZIP. The "15" indicates that it is Release 1.5. It is
being released on May 23, 1990. Future releases with updates and enhancements
will be XFAX20.ZIP (Release 2.0) for example. We always distribute the latest
enhancements to this .ZIP file on Compuserve and GEnie as well as several
major BBS's. In addition, you can call us at (800)678-8988 or fax us at
(404)438-1615 to see what the latest revision of these programs is.
Note that throughout the section, we refer to "x:" where a disk drive
designation normally goes. This "x:" corresponds to the disk drive where you
install XChange Fax/LAN.
1) Install your fax board hardware and software. Send a fax using the
software provided with your board to make sure it is operating properly.
2) NETWORK USERS: Make a directory called \XFAX on a network drive
that all users have access to. For example, MD
F:\XFAX. Then, using Supervisor access, give all
users complete access to this directory (i.e. read,
write, create, delete, etc.) In this case, the
"x:" referred to below is F:
NON-NETWORK USERS: Make a directory on your hard disk called \XFAX.
For example, MD C:\XFAX. In this case, the "x:"
referred to below is C:
3) Change into the x:\XFAX directory.
4) Copy XFAX.EXE, XFAXDRVI.EXE, and XFAXDRVH.EXE into x:\XFAX.
5) INTEL (CAS) USERS: Type x:\XFAX\XFAXDRVI SHARE=x:\XFAX
HAYES JT9600 USERS: Type x:\XFAX\XFAXDRVH SHARE=x:\XFAX
6) You are done.
HOW TO USE XCHANGE FAX/LAN
Once you have installed the resident portion of XChange Fax/LAN
(XFAXDRVx.EXE) you can use the XFAX.EXE program to actually send, cancel,
delete, and see the status of faxes. For example:
XFAX STATUS SHARE=x:\XFAX - command to show fax status summary
XFAX STATUS SHARE=x:\XFAX ID=yyyy - command to show fax detail summary
of id yyyy (get yyyy by running the
XFAX DELETE SHARE=x:\XFAX ID=yyyy - command to delete id yyyy from the
summary status report
XFAX CANCEL SHARE=x:\XFAX - cancels any active outgoing or
incoming fax (not available on Hayes
JT Fax 9600B)
XFAX SUBMIT SHARE=x:\XFAX FILE=filespec PHONE=number
- will submit file "filespec" to be
sent as a fax to the number
specified by phone
That's all there is to it!
WHAT ABOUT FEATURES?
In order to get the full power out of XChange Fax/LAN, you need more
information. This information is available by simply typing XFAX at the DOS
command line with no arguments. A help list of features is displayed. Most
of these features should be self-explanatory.
We are not trying to be mysterious or hold back information from you.
Obviously, this document could fully discuss each of the features. But, then
you wouldn't purchase XChange Fax/LAN, we wouldn't be able to stay in
business, and XChange Fax/LAN would not be enhanced. That doesn't serve
anyone's best interest.
We've given you enough information to try XChange Fax/LAN without having
to purchase it. But, if you REALLY want to get the most out of XChange
Fax/LAN, you need the complete printed documentation.
WHAT ABOUT INTEGRATING INTO MY PROGRAMS?
To incorporate XFAX into applications, most users simply write a few
batch files (FAXSUBMIT.BAT, FAXSTATUS.BAT, etc.) which call up the XFAX
program with appropriate arguments. They then write macros within 123 or
dBase for example which shell to these .BAT files. With a single keystroke
users can send faxes directly from their applications.
When you purchase XChange Fax/LAN, we provide several documented examples
of how to incorporate fax capabilities directly into 123 and dBase. These are
examples only - chances are you will change them to fit your exact needs.
We have incorporated XChange Fax/LAN into many programs. A partial list
of "big name" software packages includes 123, dBase, QEdit, Wordstar, PCTools,
Procomm, and Qmodem. We've also written many simple custom programs using
interpreted Basic to demonstrate the power of XChange Fax/LAN.
Software developers may wish to purchase the "C" source code of XChange
Fax/LAN. The functions provided allow you to immediately integrate fax
capabilities into your programs. Network support is "invisible" to your
application making implementation quick and easy.
