This is a fun and useful network utility that should be run from the
system login script or batch file. It will provide the network users
with a look at the current and next week's events, the remaining days
until the next holiday in large block numbers, and an inspiring
Quote-Of-The-Day.

The WAAG2 utility can be configured for diskless workstations and for
Monochrome or Color systems. The Quotes of the day can be per login, or
once per day. WAAG2 can be disabled, fully or partially on a per work-
station basis for maximum flexibility.

The WAAG2 display is updated either manually, as a scheduled nightly task,
or if REGISTERED then will automatically do it the first time it is run
on that day.

On our own network, I have had many good responses from the network
users about WAAG2. Although it's not a "front-line" piece of software,
it adds a nice "human" touch to the network. I think you will get good
reactions also.

Create a directory that everyone has at least Read access and copy all
WAAG2 files into it (eg. X:\WAAG).

Under that directory, create another beneath it called RWUSER, for
example: X:\WAAG\RWUSER. Assign Read/Write rights to that directory.

The TODAY.DAT file may be required to have a shareable file attribute, so
you might want to edit the UPDATE.BAT file to make TODAY.DAT a sharable
file - it is already set-up for Novell.

This is the basic Novell command used in the System Login Script:

#X:\WAAG\WAAG2 (or whatever directory name you created)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WAAG2 is normally run without any command line parameters. However, it's
behavior can be modified either by command line parameters or by DOS
environmental variables.

The Command Line parameters should be used mainly by the System
Administrator in the login script or login batch files, while the
environmental variables are best used for customizing the workstations
if needed.

The basic syntax is:

WAAG2 [options]

where the options are:

/? or /H Display command line syntax
/M+ Multi-Quote - New Quote each Login
/P- Do not pause for a key
/T:nn Timeout value in 30 sec. units (ie. 20 = 10 min.)
/U Update the TODAY.DAT database
/Wpath Path to WRITEable directory (C:\ by default)

Options may be placed with or without spaces:

WAAG2 /M /P- /T:10
is identical to
WAAG2/M/P-/T:10

Workstation Environment Variables (SET WAAG=...)

=OFF Will not display WAAG or wait for key
=NOKEY Displays WAAG but does not wait for key
=NEW Display new quote on each login
=KEEP Display same quote on each login for day
=TIME:nn Timeout value in 30 sec. units (ie. 20 = 10 min.)

You may stack up the environmental variables such as:

SET WAAG=NOKEY,NEW,TIME:10

You need to maintain a few databases for WAAG2 to work correctly. For
the most part they are simple database, and need to be dealt with only
during the initial setup, and only when events need to be added.

For all examples, I will assume you installed the system into X:\WAAG,
so if you used a different drive/name, then substitute accordingly.

There are three primary "read-only" databases:

X:\WAAG\WAAG.DAT
This is the "Week At A Glance" data. It includes a list of
all events that you would like to be shown in the two week
window.

X:\WAAG\BIGEVENT.DAT
Big Events are typically holidays or some other "big" event.
We have had VIP Birthdays, Corporate Picnics, Ski Trips etc
listed in this database. The Large Number display is used
with these events.

X:\WAAG\QUOTES.DAT
This is a database of inspirational quotes. I did have funny
quotes, but funny quotes always seem to offend SOMEONE, so I
now they are inspirational, and I haven't had one complain 🙂

And two "on the fly" or temporary database:

X:\WAAG\RWUSER\QUOTES.CNT
This is the index of the quote file. This can be located
on the users C: drive or in their personal directory if the
user would like to have quotes picked everytime they log in.

X:\WAAG\RWUSER\TODAY.DAT
This is the information that is actually displayed. It is
created by running WAAG2 with the /U parameter, or if WAAG2 is
registered, then automatically when the first person of the day
runs it. This file should not be edited manually.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
W A A G . D A T - T W O W E E K W I N D O W
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The database X:\WAAG\WAAG.DAT contains the data that displays in the
two week window. It is a ASCII text file with two fields in it: an
event date and the event.

The date should be in mm-dd-yy format. The event may be up to 37
characters long.

Here is an example:

column 1
|
11/15/92 TOPS Clients Tour Offices
11/18/92 Departmental Testing
11/23/92 Training in Conference Room 5
12/01/92 ACME Clients Tour Offices
01/29/93 Company Ski Trip

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B I G E V E N T . D A T - L a r g e D a y W i n d o w
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The database X:\WAAG\BIGEVENT.DAT contains the data that displays in
the large digits window. It is also a ASCII text file with two fields
in it: The date of the event, and the event itself. Blank lines are
allowed in the file.

Events should be phrased such as "x days UNTIL THE EVENT" or "x days
TO CHRISTMAS". On the day it happens, a double exclamation mark is
displayed "!!".

Holiday and Big Events shouldn't have more than two or three a month or
you will have too few days between events and the countdown gets some-
what defeated.

Here is an example:

Column 1
|
11-03-92 until we VOTE!
11-26-92 Thanksgiving!
12-25-92 Christmas!
12-31-92 New Year's Eve - PARTY!
2-14-93 Valentine's Day
4-4-93 Daylight Savings Time!
12-31-93 Christmas!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q U O T E S . D A T - T he Q u o t e W i n d o w
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The X:\WAAG\QUOTE.DAT file is a simple text editor. Each quote must
have the quote and the author if known. Blank lines separate the
quotes from one another. The quote itself may be 1 or two lines, and
the author is on it's own line.

Here is an example:

Column 1
|
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
-Edgar Allen Poe

Spring appears, and we are once more children.
-Anonymous

Every man at three years old is half his height.
-Leonardo da Vinci

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q U O T E S . C N T - T he Q u o t e C o u n t
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The X:\WAAG\RWUSER\QUOTE.CNT file is a text file that simply contains
the next quote number to be displayed. It is maintained by the system.

If the user wants to have different quotes each time they login, then
this file must be stored somewhere else by using the /Wpath parameter.

Here is an example:

Column 1
|
3

Would indicated that the next system quote will be the third quote (not
the third line).

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
