TWISTED PAIR WIRING NEW SPECIFICATIONS AND SUPPLIERS
NEW WIRING SPECIFICATIONS:

Although most popular types of twisted pair wiring are supported
by SMC's twisted pair network, only certain types 24 and 26 AWG
solid and 26 AWG stranded may actually be connected directly to
SMC's twisted pair products. This is due to the physical
limitation of the plug which mates with the 6-position modular
jack used on all of SMC's twisted pair products. Therefore, in
order to use any other type of wiring, an adapter or modular wall
plate is required to convert this wiring to the type that may be
used with the recommended plug. This is not a restriction and,
in fact, mimics the wiring layouts of competitive products and
even telephones themselves.

NEW RECOMMENDED SUPPLIERS:

Please note that both the Belden and the Weico twisted pair
wiring recommended for use with our ARCNET twisted pair products
in the Installation Guide published last November (1987) are no
longer recommended. These suppliers have discovered that the
impedance of their products could be affected by their
surroundings, that is, by a conduit or nearby lighting fixture.
If, however, you have already installed either of these types of
wiring and no problems have surfaced, there is no need to rewire
the site.

We now suggest that all twisted pair wiring be purchased from
AT&T. A complete list of currently approved part numbers appears
below. This list has been incorporated into Rev. B of the
Installation Guide, which will be available shortly.

Gauge Type COMCODE #
26 AWG solid 105-065-072
24 AWG solid 105-048-839
22 AWG solid 105-048-904
26 AWG stranded 105-064-703
24 AWG stranded 104-309-430

SMC has an on-going program to qualify other popular types of
twisted pair wiring. As these evaluations are completed, we will
inform you accordingly. If, however, you require a wiring type
that is not currently specified, please contact us so that we may
add it to our list for evaluation.

In addition to 22 and 24 AWG solid twisted pair wiring, SMC has
fully tested and approved 26 AWG solid and both 24 and 26 AWG
stranded twisted pair wiring for use with our ARCNET twisted pair
products.

Note however that the 22 AWG solid and 24 AWG stranded wires may
not be connected directly to the recommended modular plugs this
includes those shipped in our Twisted Pair Kit. Therefore, they
may be used only for inteconnect wiring in walls.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
