:: MAIL2 ::

MAIL2 is designed for utilization on networks which use cc:Mail for
communications. It is a useful utility that will cc:Mail any file to the
person you specify. You do not have to enter cc:Mail to send the file, and
it is *very* fast.


:: Ideas ::

What can you use MAIL2 for? Well, it lends itself well to just about any
project:

It's perfect for timed-execution batch files, allowing you to notify a
system administrator about the status of a function. For example:

o Use MAIL2 to notify you when your backup is completed.

o Use MAIL2 to report an error condition when a task fails.

o Use MAIL2 to notify you that a file has been uploaded.

o Here's an example:


Every night at midnight on my network, the following batch
file runs automatically:

@ECHO OFF
rem *** USERLIST lists all the people still logged on the
rem *** network. These are people who forgot to turn off their
rem *** computer before they went home, or are nocturnal
rem *** businessmen.
USERLIST > BADBOYS.TXT
MAIL2 BADBOYS.TXT DAVID POTTER
DEL BADBOYS.TXT

And, of course, every morning, I run the following commands:
MAIL2 YOU-DOPE.TXT JOE BADBOY /FROM The Network Police /TEXT

It's very handy for the DOS-command-line-whiz. Speeds up
mailing of files 98% (estimated, please don't sue me).


:: What you need ::

First off, you need cc:Mail. Either the Mac or the DOS platform pack will
work. MAIL2, of course, will only run from a DOS platform. You can,
however, run it against a cc:Mail database accessed only by Macs.

You will also need the cc:Mail Import/Export program. This utility
is available from cc:Mail, and is an indispensable utility for serious
cc:Mail administrators.

MAIL2 version 1.90 and above requires cc:Mail Import/Export version 3.21
or higher. If you have an older version of cc:Mail Import/Export please
contact Cobblestone Software and inquire about MAIL2 v1.82.

:: Preparation ::

1: Before using MAIL2, you must set the MAIL2 environment variable with:

POSTOFFICE ADMINISTRATORS POSTOFFICE USERS

2: MAIL2 will create a temporary file named MAIL2.OUT, so be sure that you
don't already have such a file, as it will be overwritten.

3: Make sure that IMPORT.EXE (from cc:Mail Import/Export) is in the MAIL2
directory or in the PATH environment variable.




:: Usage ::

To send a file to somebody, use the following command:

MAIL2
Example: MAIL2 AUTOEXEC.BAT John Doe


The file will be sent to the specified user as a file item. If you wish to
send it as a TEXT item, then use:

MAIL2 /TEXT
Example: MAIL2 D:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI Mary Kay Wallace /TEXT

All mail will be sent with the cc:Mail user name in the 'From:' field.
cc:Mail administrators can alter this by using:

MAIL2 /FROM
Example: MAIL2 C:\LOGOUT.TXT Jimmy Dean /FROM Dana Caralaho
Example: MAIL2 C:\LOGOUT.TXT Jimmy Dean /FROM Dana Caralaho /TEXT

This feature is not available to standard cc:Mail users. (cc:Mail's
IMPORT.EXE does not allow a user to send mail under an assumed name for
security reasons.)
