IPX_PING Version 2.0

======================== Features ==========================

IPX_PING.EXE is a DOS Utility for checking liveliness of Novell
servers or workstations and collect performance data in terms of
round-trip delay. It is a must-have tool for Novell server
administrators or data communication professionals. It provides the
following features:

(1) Send request to Novell Server or Novell Workstation, measure
round-trip time delay between the request and response. This can
provide valuable information on end-to-end IPX connectivity and
performance data in term of round-trip delay.

(2) Repeated IPX Ping allows users to send request at user-
specified interval. This can be used to monitor end-to-end
connectivity and round-trip delay continuously.

(3) DOS batch interface capability. This allows users to write DOS
batch files to make use of this utility to check a list of Novell
servers or workstations.

(4) This is a genuine DOS utility. Output can be piped to other
utilities or redirected to a file for later use.

======================== System Requirements =================

Hardware requirements: IBM PC or Compatible. 42 Kbytes RAM.

Software requirements: MS-DOS 3.3 up with Novell workstation IPX
drivers loaded.

======================== Installation ========================

(1) copy IPX_PING.ZIP file to the directory where you want to
install the software. Then change your working directory to that
directory.

(2) From DOS command prompt, issue

PKUNZIP IPX_PING.ZIP

to extract all files.

======================== Use IPX_PING ========================

In order to use this utility, you need to provide network number
and node number of the Novell server or the Novell workstation.
This information can be found by using the "SLIST" or "USERLIST /A"
Novell utilities.

The general command format is:

IPX_PING [-r INTERVAL] Network Node

Suppose you use SLIST and have an entry like:

Known NetWare File Servers Network Node Address Status
-------------------------- ------- ------------ ------
MT_SERVER [ A123][ 1]

Then from DOS prompt, issue:

c:\ipx_ping>IPX_PING A123 1

will display whether that server is alive and if it is alive, the
round-trip delay.

Suppose you use USERLIST /A and find a record containing the
following information:

GUEST [ 1523] [ F65A562]

Then 1523 is the network number and F65A562 is the node number.

c:\ipx_ping>IPX_PING 1523 F65A562

will display whether that workstation is alive and if it is alive,
the round-trip delay.

As a general utility, IPX_PING can be used for any network number
and node number even if the workstation doesn't exist, for which
case, IPX_PING will return "No Response".

Other Examples:

IPX_PING -r 2 1523 F65A562 ; Repeat IPX_PING every 2 seconds
IPX_PING ? ; Get help

==================== Batch Mode Operation =================

If IPX_PING fails to get response in 4 seconds, in addition to
print "No Response" on screen, it also returns a DOS ERRORLEVEL 1
code, which can be checked within a batch file.

An example batch file, IPXPING.BAT is provided to show how to use
this capability.

How you can make use of this feature is up to your imagination.
