SONGS ON DISK

The GET, STORE, and DELETE functions on the main menu allow you to get
songs from disk, store songs on disk, and delete songs from disk.

To retrieve a song from disk, select GET from the main menu, scroll
through the songs displayed using the up and down arrow keys, and then
hit Enter.

The STORE function is the opposite of GET. It puts the song currently
displayed onto the disk. The program permits a maximum of 40 songs in any
single directory. To store more songs, use a different directory or disk
(see below for changing directories).

When you wish to erase a song on a disk, use DELETE. DELETE removes the
song from the disk permanently - so be sure you select the correct song when
using this function.

USING DIFFERENT DIRECTORIES

Ordinarily, songs are retrieved, stored, and deleted from the disk and
directory from which you started the program. However, by hitting the F1 key
in the any of these functions, you can change to any valid directory and/or
disk.

DESKMATE USERS

When using the program on a Tandy 1000 or other computer with the Tandy
Deskmate user interface, please note that the song file format used in the
Music Transcription System II is different from that used by the Tandy
Deskmate Music program. You should not attempt to use files produced by one
program with those produced by the other. The file type suffix used in the
Music Transcription System II (.mts) is different from that used in the
Deskmate Music program (.sng) to prevent accidental confusions.

MUSIC TRANSCRIPTION SYSTEM UPGRADES

Songs created with early versions of the Music Transcription System
can be used with this new version of the software by changing the file
suffix. Early versions of the program used the suffix ".sng". The new
program uses the suffix ".mts" to avoid collisions with files produced by the
Tandy Deskmate Music program. To allow the Music Transcription System II to
read songs written by the original Music Transcription System, you must use
the DOS "rename" command on each song to change it to the new suffix. For
example, for song files named song0.sng, song1.sng, etc. you would use the
rename command as shown below:

rename song0.sng song0.mts
rename song1.sng song1.mts
.
.

Once the songs are renamed, the new Music Transcription System II will
be able to find them with the GET function. However, the title will not show
up in the GET window; only the song file name will be displayed. To correct
this situation, you should use GET to bring in each song and then use STORE to
write it back to disk. Using STORE will convert the song to the new format
and will prompt you for the title. Once converted and assigned a title, GET
will display both the file name and title in the GET window.

To help you in remembering which titles to use with which songs, you may
wish to get a list of song names and titles by printing the file song.idx
used by the original Music Transcription System. This file may be deleted
after the songs are converted since it is not used by the new program.

***** WARNING *****

Once renamed and/or rewritten, songs CANNOT be read by older versions of
the program. We strongly encourage you to make a backup copy of your song
disks before performing the conversion procedure described above.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
