General Notes on InternetWorks installation:
-----------------------------------------------------------

In this release, you must install InternetWorks to a directory
on your root named "iw".

1. InternetWorks works with any Internet Access Provider (IAP)
that provides a SLIP or PPP account.

2. InternetWorks may need to add the following line to your
autoexec.bat file to enable shared access to files required
by InternetWorks:

share /L:500 /F:5100

Alternatively, you can add the line:

device=vshare.386

to your system.ini file, [386enh] section, for some savings
of your DOS memory. In general, vshare.386 is available only in
version 3.11 of Windows or Windows for Workgroups but some versions
of Windows 3.1 also have it available.

InternetWorks may also alter the path to include the newly
intalled software by adding:

Set PATH = C:\IW;%PATH%

InternetWorks setup gives you a choice of whether or not you
want it to update your autoexec.bat file.

3. Because this release contains extensive changes, there is no update
program for previous releases. To upgrade from a previous release,
you must rename or delete the previous release, then install the new
release.

How to install InternetWorks from the hard drive after downloading:
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. Create a temporary directory and cd into it.

2. Copy beta7.exe into this directory.

3. Unzip the file by typing "beta7.exe", which self extracts
the files into the temporary directory.

NOTE: If you use use the File Manager to execute beta7.exe,
you may need to run the Refresh option under the Window menu to
see the extracted files. This forces the drive to rescan
so that it can then "see" the newly added files. This is dependent
on the caching set up on your particular drives and may not happen to
you.

4. Start Windows if it isn't running already. Open the Windows
Program Manager.

5. From the File menu, select the Run command and
type "drive:\tempdir\setup" where "drive" is the hard
drive that you unzipped the files onto and "tempdir" is the
temporary directory that you unzipped the files into.

Alternately, you can use the File Manager in Windows
to access the temporary directory and double click on
the file "setup.exe"

How to create InternetWorks installation diskettes:
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. Insert a blank formatted diskette into a diskette drive.

2. Change directory to a diskette drive.

3. Unzip the file by typing "disk1b7.exe", which self extracts
the files onto the diskette. You may need to specify the
full path to the file "disk1b7.exe".

4. Repeat steps 1-3 to copy disk2b7.exe to a diskette.

5. Insert disk 1 into a diskette drive.
From the File menu, select the Run command and
type "drive:\setup" where "drive" is the diskette
drive that you unzipped the files onto.

Alternately, you can use the File Manager in Windows
to access the diskette drive and double click on
the file "setup.exe" on disk 1.

How to install Trumpet after downloading:
------------------------------------------------------------

1. Create a directory for Trumpet, e.g., C:\TRUMPET

2. Copy trumpet.exe from your download directory
to the directory created in step 1.

3. Execute trumpet.exe. It is a self-extracting zip file.

4. Make sure to read the install.doc (MS Word version) or
install.txt for Trumpet. This explains what is needed
to set up Trumpet.

5. Make sure to add the directory in which you have installed
Trumpet to the PATH statement in your autoexec.bat file.

NOTE: If you have another winsock.dll in your PATH
you may have problems if you also include
Trumpet in your path. It is advisable to have only
one winsock.dll within your path.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
