InternetWorks FAQ

What is a "winsock" and why do I need one?
Winsock is short for Windows Socket. You need a winsock.dll
loaded on your machine to make the communications connection
between your SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) or PPP (Point
to Point Protocol) account and windows. This is facilitated
by some accociated TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol) software. An shareware example of this that is made
available to you on our server is "Trumpet" (trumpet.exe).

A communications link must be made by the TCP/IP client software
on your machine with your IAP (Internet Access Provider) SLIP/PPP
account before any graphical/Windows internet software can be used.

This TCP/IP client and the winsock.dll are the communications
software that make the connection to the Internet. Once the connection
is made, any graphical/Windows Internet software can access the line.
(examples being: Internetworks, Hgopher, Eudora, WinFTP, other browsers)

What is a "browser"?
Browser is a term used to denote graphical interfaces to the WWW
(World Wide Web).

What is the WWW/World Wide Web?
The WWW is the collective body of documents on the Internet
that are written in the HTML format. This format allows for
"hotlinks" to other HTML documents, as well as every other
type of available data on the Internet (examples being: FTP
sites, gopher menus, telnet access points, plain text files, etc.)

What is HTML?
HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is a coding system (usually
refered to as a markup language, hence the acronym) that
define the display of text files and facilitate hotlinks that
make up the WWW.

What is a Hotlink?

A hotlink is a sections of text in an HTML document that

InternetWorks format. By using the format you can save
images, text, and audio in the same file.

What changes are made to the autoexec.bat file?
The two changes made are:
1. The IW directory is added to the path
2. The share.exe command is added on a line of its own
If you want to use share only under Windows then
delete the line in the autoexec.bat file and add the line
(or see if it already exists)
device=vshare.386
to your system.ini file within the Windows directory.

What do the up and down arrows do for me?
They allow you to traverse particular sub-branches
of documents that are loaded, giving you a three-dimensional
traversing ability.

What are some sample settings for the Trumpet Winsock?
Check the Trumpet documentation for recommended settings.
This can be found in the directory where Trumpet is located
(e.g.; C:\TRUMPET). The documents are install.txt (ASCII version)
or install.doc (Microsoft Word version).

What are the hardware and software requirements?
Recommended (minimum in parentheses) configuration
- 486 (386) IBM-compatible PC
- 8 MB (4MB) of RAM
- 5 MB of free disk space
- 14,400 (2,400) baud modem
- Color (monochrome) VGA display

To intiate OLE drag and drop:

- Hold the Control key down while you press and hold the left
mouse button (or whatever mouse button is the select button).
- When the cursor has changed to an arrow with a small gray box
and a "plus" sign you can release the Control key but keep
the mouse button depressed. (larger pages with lots of images
may take longer to intiate)
- Drag the mouse cursor to the application where you would like to
drop the page. The cursor will display a circle with a line
through it if you are in an area where you cannot "drop" the document.
- Release the mouse button. The document is dropped in
the application.

Yes, InternetWorks will work with any winsock client. Some may
require more setup than others. Check the documentation of
the particular winsock for more details.

Will this software work with any Internet Access Provider?
Yes, InternetWorks works with any IAP that supplies
at least a SLIP connection.

What is an IAP (Internet Access Provider)?
Someone who can provide you with a connection to
the Internet. This may be in the form of a SLIP, PPP, Leased Line,
Frame Relay, or a T1.

What is a SLIP account?

world-wide network known commonly as the Internet.

What is PPP?
Point to Point Protocol - a form of connection to the
world-wide network known commonly as the Internet.

Is PPP supported?
InternetWorks software supports PPP; however the version

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
