I guess the keywords say it all. Just got this today, and so far I'm
heartily impressed. First of all, MUSHA's a vertically scrolling shooter,
pure arcade-style play. No strategy, no RPG, just shoot like hell.
The graphics are astounding. There is a ~2 minute intro to the game
that is pretty much just like watching a cartoon. The premise is that
you're Terri, one member of the five-person MUSHA (Metallic Uniframe
Super Hybrid Armor) team, assigned to go kill a bunch of space nasties.
During the intro, all of your buddies get offed, so it's just you against
the Forces of Evil. _Very_ impressive graphics and animation. Good cart
to pop in to show your friends...
The gameplay. Well, there are seven levels, and unlimited continues.
The unlimited continues should tell you a bit about the skill level of
this cart. I'm a relatively adept shooter player, and MUSHA is very
challenging, even on easy level. You have a main weapon, which can be
powered up several times, and three types of Special weapons. These are
available by catching capsules during the game. There are 4 levels to
each of the special weapons. Finally, if you power up your main weapon
(a pea-shooter-type thing) enough, you get two little drones which fly
beside you and shoot, much like the "claws" in Whip Rush. You can configure
these drones in six different formations (forward, 3-way, backward, etc.).
Finally, you can set your ship's speed (also a la Whip Rush) to accomodate
different situations. The gameplay is fast and furious. There seems to
be a large variety of critters to kill, most of them some sort of mech
with sinister-looking human faces. It's very possible to lose track of
what's friendly and what's not, with power-ups, special weapons, drones
AND enemies all flying around the screen at once.
The music's nice, though not something to make a CD out of... I like it
slightly more than the music on most Genny games. No voices or anything...
yet.
For those of you who appreciate multi-multi-level scrolling backgrounds,
this is _the_ game for you. Level 3 has you flying over an extremely 3D
chasm. It almost gives you vertigo! When you shoot enemies on this level,
they slowly fall down into the chasm - great scaling effects. At the end
of each level, the screen... well, it kind of melts into black. Very funky.
Who knows what graphic treats lie on the harder levels. Oh yeah, it's
supposed to have multiple endings, too. I won't know about those for a
_long_ time, though...
All in all, I highly recommend this game. I love shooters, and this one's
a real treat, if more than a little hectic.

Hmmmm, I've solved this game quite a few times on all but the hard level and
I still only see one ending. Could be that the Japanese and American versions
are different. (I have Musha Aleste).
This game disappointed me as far as difficulty. I expected it to be much
harder but blew through the thing on my third try (easy level no continues
used). The last boss alien is NASTY, but otherwise you get the hang of
this thing real fast. HARD level is still quite difficult but I can still
get to the last guy without losing more than 1 ship. Need any tips send me
e-mail.

I'm sure someone has already reviewed this, but I'll put in my two cents.
Got it today at Babbages for $20. It's debatable whether Musha or TFIII was
the best $20 I've spent on the genesis. Right now, I think Musha wins.
Damn good shooter. Very intense action...reminds me of Blazing Lasers on the
TG-16. The powerups are very similar to the method of powerups on blazing
lasers. You first have a main weapon. This weapon is a relatively wimpy
peashooter that cam be powered up to a better pea shooter. Then you can get
a special weapon. This weapon can be powered up to four times by picking up
the same special weapon symbol. If you choose a different special weapon
symbol, you keep the same level as the first weapon, but swich special weapons.
The special weapon is the real ass kicker. In addition, you get the option...
these small guns (2) that you get to control formation wise. You choose a
formation for the guns (forward, reverse, opposite, free roation, free roaming).
All that firepower for one little battlesuit. One thing I like is the
unlimited continues (but it does make the game shorter). I finished the easy
level in one sitting of 2 hours, but it was a fun sitting.
Blazing Lasers was a little frustrating due to the importance of powerups. If
youu got killed, you were often dead meat. Then the last level was hell and I
never did end up getting past it (no unlimited continues).
In Musha, if you die, you can recover your power level relatively easily. No
big worries.
In closing, a very intense shooter...I finished it in one sitting, but try
completing the game without using any continues. Definitely a great buy!
Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
