Copyright 1994, by Daniel Corbier
All Rights Reserved.

The Shareware Author & User Case Study is a document which answers
questions frequently asked by shareware authors, such as what
percentage of users register, what motivates users to register, what
prevents them from doing so, how much they are willing to pay, how they
make payments, demographics, how to get one's program "out there", what
makes some programs stand above the crowd and get noticed by the press,
just how successful some authors are, how long it takes to succeed, and
more. Answers are based on survey responses from shareware users and
successful authors.

This document itself is being released as shareware. Copies may be
distributed by BBSes, FTP sites, CD-ROMs, disk vendors, etc..., with
the following conditions:

- The following files must all be present together, and unmodified when
distributed:

FILE_ID.DIZ - Brief description of the document for BBS use
SUMMARY.TXT - Brief summary of the document
LICENSE.TXT - License terms (this file)
REGISTER.TXT - Registration form
TOPTEN.TXT - Top ten reasons you should register
SAUCS1.TXT - Main document

- When distributed inside a compressed file, the prefix of that file
should be SAUCS1.

- The document should be listed under the name "Shareware Author & User
Case Study". "1st edition", "v1", "first version", etc..., can
optionally be added.

- Vendors who have a copy which is dated more than 2 years should check
to see if there is a newer edition before distributing the document.

- Any vendor publication which lists SAUCS must clearly have an
explanation of the shareware concept. This information must be
visible to customers before they pay a fee to the vendor.

- The abstract in SHARE.TXT, the FILE_ID.DIZ file, the {SDA.ID} file,
and the first paragraph of LICENSE.TXT all contain text recommended
for use as a description for this document.

- This document should not be bundled as part of another product
without permission.

- SAUCS is copyrighted shareware. It should never be classified as
public domain or free software.

- The survey data that is sent to registered users should not be
distributed in any form.

- License for the registered version is not transferable.

- Printed copies of SAUCS may not be distributed, except for
instructional use. In this case, printed copies can be made for
classroom students, or club members, as long as 1) an electronic copy
of the document is also made available to recipients 2) the
instructor verbally encourages all recipients to register the
document (see me for group discounts) 3) the files REGISTER.TXT,
LICENSE.TXT, TOPTEN.TXT, and SUMMARY.TXT are also printed with the
main document 4) recipients are instructed not to make or distribute
further printed copies 5) no fee is collected for the printed copy.

- This document must not be rented or leased.

- Those who benefit from the information in SAUCS are expected to
register with the author. Users are given a 30 day evaluation
period. The registration form can be printed by typing
"COPY REGISTER.TXT PRN" at the DOS prompt.

- The brief summary found in the file SUMMARY.TXT, may be used
separately from the rest of the set, as long as the text is not
modified or truncated. It can however be included as part of another
document, as long as this other document is not for sale. It can
also be used as a bulletin on BBSes. It can also be posted in
forums. This applies ONLY to the SUMMARY.TXT text and nothing else.
The main document must always be accompanied by all the other
intended files, and it may not be used as part of another product
without my permission.

- Up to 1K (1024 bytes) of text from the main document may be quoted
and used in another document, as long as due credit (including my
name, this document's name, & edition) is given. Before quoting
other authors cited in this document, you must obtain their
permission.

- Although it is not a requirement, those who publish a review of
this document are encouraged to send me a copy of the publication
containing the review.

NOTE: The above terms are meant to be easy to comply with. Basically,
distributors & users who operate legally and in fairness to
shareware authors, are encouraged to circulate, and make use of
this document. In case you see a restriction which seems
ambiguous or unfair, please contact me to see what can be worked
out.
