PAM 1.1 provides a snap shot of your hard disk utilization. It is useful on
any DOS machine with several logical drives (i.e. not just a C: drive). If you
are operating on a single C: drive, you probably won't see much point in this
software. However, keep it around; once you have more than 1 or 2 drives to
contend with, you'll need something like this (or MR, or MAP, or DMD, or ...)
to track your overall space utilization.

Enter PAM at the prompt, and you will get something like the following:

The Size and Free figures are in Megabytes. The horizontal bars are scaled to
the size of the largest individual drive (in this case either the D, E, or F
drives), then re-scaled for the Total line. This gives a sense of both the
relative space on each drive as well as the overall space across all drives.
Because we are using Text mode graphics, the graduations on the scale are

necessarily approximate, and should be treated accordingly. The numeric
representation is provided at the same time for a more exact description of
the space allocation.

The figures are derived as follows:
Size = Total Clusters * Bytes per Cluster
Free = Clusters Available * Bytes per Cluster
Bytes per Cluster = Sectors per Cluster * Bytes per Sector

Note that the default mode of PAM 1.1 includes ONLY hard drives in the total
calculation. Using parameter '/A' will switch to ALL drives. This was
introduced to avoid double counting of SUBSTituted directory space.


You may alter PAM's default settings through various parameters, most of
which are entered by typing a '/x' parameter ID followed by optional text
relevant to that parameter. For instance, "PAM /C /R /U- /F+ /TJim's PC"
would produce the following:

of his product name. This release rectifies the mixup, and addresses some
of the critique that Steve offered after reviewing my MAP 1.0. By the way,
Steve's company (Mini-Tech Systems) offers a number of utilities that are
worth investigating - MAP, DRIVE, MSGSEND, PPURGE.

Jim Devoe of Common Systems wrote the application. The code is Pascal,
compiled under Borland's Turbo Pascal 5.5 and relying somewhat on Turbo
Power's Professional 5.0 utilities. The disk information is taken directly
from the utilities supplied by these vendors, and is as reliable as the
products offered by these vendors, which we have every reason to trust.
