LLFDFMT.COM is a low level fixed disk formatter for the IBM XT.

The dos format command will only setup a directory and fat and fill
all of the winchester's sectors with a fill byte, along with doing
a few other sundry duties. This does not actually `FORMAT' the drive.

LLFDFMT.COM will do an actual format of the drive, creating the media
bitmap and creating and verifying all new sectors. in using the
program, please note that the one hour run-time estimate is actually
about 37 minutes, so dont panic......

This program should be used only under the
following circumstances:

(1) You have moved your computer or the hard-disk has received a
shock that you beleive has rendered it useless. Generally,
if this occours, it means that the head assembly has been moved
out of alignment relative to the track placement on the disk.

(2) You have recently purchased one of the many XT type hard-disk
controller cards and a `RAW' winchester disk drive. The new
drive must have a low level format done to it before FDISK will
recognize it as a valid disk drive.

(3) You no longer care about what you have on your drive and you
need some way to waste about 40 minutes

If you have a problem with your drive, and you beleive it to be an
alignment problem, this program will solve the problem every time,
but also at the expense of any data that was on the drive.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
