The following information was collected using a Compaq Deskpro with
an Adaptec 2010 controller, and a Seagate 20mb 80ms hard drive. I tested
different interleaves ranging from 6 to 2 to find out the optimum setting
for my system. Using the low level format built in my controller, FDISK,
FORMAT, and finally the CORE Disk Performance Test Program (Version 2.7),
I tested each interleave and came up with the following results:

As the table shows, an interleave of three is the optimum setting for
my machine. Since the optimum setting differs from system to system, It is
advisable that you run this series of tests on your machine. If you are as
much of a perfectionist as I, you can sacrifice about three hours to run the
tests and reinstall your software. I would like to thank Bob Schniebolk,
sysop of CONTECH BBS for the help he provided.

Evan has done some really interesting work here, however, please note that his
results are applicable to his system. That is, if you repeat these tests for
your disk controller, your hard disk, and your system (BIOS), you will not
get the same results; however, when your tests are completed, you will have
optimized your hard disk to achieve its highest data transfer rate.
Notice, for Evan's system, there is a 2:1 difference in performance between
the data transfer rate at an interleave of 6 and that of 3. Notice also, that
if you are over-zealous and select too small an interleave, data access speed
is dramatically reduced. From the times between telephone calls, I estimate
the test series took about 4-5 hours. Well worth the effort, considering the
increased performance which Evan achieved.

Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
