About Shareware

Shareware is Try Before you Buy software! Shareware is not free and
most shareware is not developed as a hobby! Patri-Soft grants you 30
days to evaluate this program without risk or obligation. After that
time, you must remove the program from your system, or purchase it
through Patri-Soft or one of our authorized distributors.

Shareware authors, including us, work many, many hours to create good
quality software hoping to make a reasonable living (like those
striving to be actors or professional athletes, very few are
successful). We are well aware that our success depends on you. We
make every effort to provide you with good software at low prices. In
return, we hope you will support our efforts. Without your support,
many good shareware programs die as their authors are unable to
continue to support and enhance products without income. Please pay
for the shareware you use so you can keep getting great software at
reasonable prices!

About Stowaway's Auto Restore

Auto Restore is a complimentary product to Stowaway, Patri-Soft's file
archival system. Stowaway, lets you select files to be moved off your
hard disk to inexpensive diskette storage. The unique feature of
Stowaway is that it keeps hard disk indexes about every file it
stores. These indexes are used to easily locate any file stored on
archive volumes without having to access the individual volumes.

When you need to restore an archived file, Stowaway lets you enter
filenames or wildcard specifications to list and select the file to be
restored. It asks for the disk containing the file and restores it to
its proper location. This is a manual process that must be performed
prior to accessing the file with DOS or any other application. You
must know the file that needs to be restored. Stowaway's Auto Restore
automates this process.

Auto Restore is installed when you start your computer and resides
in your system watching all file accesses. It detects when any
program attempts to access a file that has been archived. It can
do this because Stowaway optionally leaves the archived file on the
hard disk with zero size and a time of 12:00am and therefore the
file occupies no space but is still visable. When any program tries
to read or write one of these files, Auto Restore searches
Stowaway's archive indexes to verify the file is archived and, if
so, displays a window on your display to tell you an archived file
has been referenced and asks if you would like to restore it for
processing.

If you respond yes to restore the file, Auto Restore then asks you to
place the archive volume in the drive and proceeds to restore the
file. If you respond no, Auto Restore notifys DOS, and subsequently
your program or command, the file is inaccessable. The program or
command accessing the file will take its normal action when a file is
not accessible.

After the restore is complete, the text window is removed from your
display and the active program or command continues its normal
operation. Auto Restore goes back to waiting for the next archived
file to be accessed.

Auto Restore gives you additional freedom to archive more files to
offline storage volumes. Since it takes care of all restore processing
automatically, you can archive files and trust they will be
immediately accessible anytime they are needed.

Since Stowaway keeps directory entries on your hard disk for all
archived files, you still can list and search for files as you have
always been able to do. But they no longer take up valuable hard disk
space
Page 3

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Auto Restore may be temporarily disabled at any time by issuing a DOS
command. It will remain in memory until enabled by a second command
or until the system is turned off.

Note: Auto Restore does not work with alternate IDs at this time.
Only the regular ID will be searched.

System Requirements

Any PC, XT, or AT type machine.
Stowaway requires 350K of memory while archiving files
Auto Restore requires less than 30K of memory when installed
A hard disk is required. 500k program disk space used.
Stowaway will archive as a DOS Windows application
Auto Restore will not restore when graphics displays are active.

Getting the Most from Auto Restore

Here are some ideas for using Stowaway and Auto Restore to free up
expensive hard disk space:

Archive old word processing, or spreadsheet files. Your directories
will still have the names of all the archived files, and when you load
one of the files using your word processor, Auto Restore will pup-up
and start the restore.

Archive graphics, picture and clip-art files. Their names are
still in the directories for quick access.

Reduce the amount hard disk space required by software products.
Many times, software products install many files you will never
use. These exist of example files, installation notes, read.me
files, printer drivers, display drivers, fonts, and much more.
You would like to remove what is not needed but are not
absolutely sure what files are not needed. Use Stowaway to
archive the files you think are not needed. Then run your
program normally. Auto Restore will detect any access to
archived files and automatically restore them. FIles needed will
be restored and those never accessed will stay in the archives.

Clean up hard disk utilities and save files without worry if they
are every accessed. If you needed them, just type their name.
They will be immediately restored.

With Stowaway and Auto Restore, you can have the cleanest hard disk
posible. Hard disks never seem to be large enough. Stowaway will
make sure you are always making best use of your space.

How Auto Restore Works

Auto Restore installs itself in memory and then watches all open
functions that are used to prepare a file for reading or writing.
This type of process is often referred to as a Terminate and Stay
Resident (TSR) application. During its operation, it intercepts the
requesting program's process to restore a file. Auto Restore than
uses the Stowaway index to determine if the file is an archived
file, and it so, restores it.

Installing Auto Restore

Installing Auto Restore is easy. The Auto Restore program AR.EXE must
be kept with Stowaway program in Stowaway's directory on your hard
disk. It uses Stowaway option and index files for its operation.

Setting Stowaway Options

For auto Restore to operate, Stowaway needs to prepare the
files for Auto Restore. In the system options, set Stowaway
so that archived files will be prepared for Auto Restore (If
files are already archived, select "Prepare files for
Auto-Restore" in the utility menu). Stowaway will leave a
zero byte file in the directory, so that the file is "there"
but occupies no space.

Start Stowaway and access its Options specifications
to specify this option.

Starting Auto Restore

Enter the AR command to install Stowaway. This must be done
when no other programs are running in your system.
Normally, you will place the AR command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file to be executed every time your system is started. See
your DOS manual if you are unfamiliar with the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file or how to change it. NOTE: AR.EXE HAS to be in the
same directory as STOW.EXE.

C> AR <=== To install Auto Restore

Disabling and enabling Auto Restore

You may not want Auto Restore to be active while using some
programs or commands. For example, you do not want to have Auto
Restore active during your system backup as backup will access
the file and Auto Restore will attempt to restore archived files
before backup (Note, Patri-Soft's MegaBack backup system is aware

Page 5

-----------------------------------------------------------------

of auto restore and will automatically backup the directory entry
for archvied files without causing them to be restored).

To temporarily disable auto restore, enter the AR command with
the /D command parameter specified.

AR /D <=== Use to disable Auto Restore

To reenable Auto Restore after it has been disabled, enter the AR
command with the /E command parameter specified.

AR /E <=== Use to enable Auto Restore

The AR command to disable and enable auto restore processing may
be placed in batch files, or menu specifications, before backup
or other commands. This will let you automatically disable and
enable processing when needed.

Removing Auto Restore from Memory

To remove Auto Restore from memory, restart your system by
rebooting it or by turing it off and back on.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
