INTRODUCING POOL-MEISTER

POOL-MEISTER is a program designed to aid you in running and keeping
track of the four most popular types of football pools. POOL-MEISTER,
however, is not public domain or free software. The program is a fully
copyrighted work protected to the full extent of US and international
copyright law.

POOL-MEISTER is based on a marketing technique called "shareware" or
"user-supported software", which is a means for you to receive quality
software while directly supporting authors. It is based on the idea that
the value and utility of software can be best assessed by the user on his
or her own system. Whether a particular program really serves personal
applications and needs is determined through use at your leisure.

While you are granted a limited license to evaluate the program on a
trial basis, regular use of the program requires purchase. Using the
software weekly for regular football pool processing is not trial use and
therefore requires purchase.

You are not allowed to modify the software under any conditions. We do,
however, encourage you to enjoy and benefit from its use.

You may copy the program for the trial use of others subject to the rules
outlined in the section "Limited License to Copy". In general, you may
only copy the program in complete and unmodified form without the game
file - GAMES.DAT.

You may not charge any fee for copies of the program without written
permission from FLAMINGO SOFTWARE.

WELCOME TO POOL-MEISTER

POOL-MEISTER is everything you need (except players) to begin running
your office football pool. Pool-Meister has been designed to keep track
of the four most popular types of football pools. The program comes with
a Pro and selected College Team file. Upon registration, the Pro game
schedule for the season is included.

The first type of pool POOL-MEISTER supports is the simple won/lost pool.
In this game, players select the team that they feel will win each
particular game. The second type of game follows the above format with
the addition of playing against the week's line. The third type of game
allows the players to make their selections with "confidence" points.
Using confidence points, the players rank their selections based on the
confidence they have for their picks on each game. For example, the game
a player has the least confidence in would be ranked 1, the one with the
most confidence would be ranked highest (14 if playing 14 games). The
fourth game follows the confidence point rules with the addition of
playing against the week's line.

Here's a summary of POOL-MEISTER's major features:

Player Maintenance

POOL-MEISTER lets you keep track of the names, phone numbers and room
numbers of all the players in your pool. POOL-MEISTER imposes no
software restriction on the number of players; as with the other support
files kept by POOL-MEISTER, the only restriction is dependent on the
amount of memory in your computer. Generally, 256K should be more than
adequate for even the largest pools. POOL-MEISTER provides easy to
manipulate data entry screens for entering and updating all information.
Player statistics are automatically maintained for weekly processing and
year-to-date summaries. It keeps track of the total weeks a player has
been in your pool, the number of games won/lost and total points if
playing a "Confidence Pool" (but more on that later).

Team Maintenance

Supplied with POOL-MEISTER is the complete Pro and selected College team
file. POOL-MEISTER keeps track of the team type (Pro, College or Other),
conference, division and team totals which include wins, losses, ties,
points for and points against. Team totals are automatically maintained
through weekly pool processing.

2

Game Maintenance

Upon registration, the complete Pro schedule for the season will be
supplied with POOL-MEISTER to get you started. All 224 Pro games are
supplied with teams playing, game date/time and the ability to enter the
point spread along with the score of the game.

POOL-MEISTER Set-Up

POOL-MEISTER Set-Up lets you define the way you wish to run your football
pool. A simple won/lost pool, confidence pool, what happens when there's
a tie, and if you want a tie-breaker, are the POOL-MEISTER parameters.
Also, POOL-MEISTER lets you define your printer port, lines per page,
whether you want to publicize the names of pool players on reports and
your name - the Pool-Meister.

Weekly Processing

Weekly processing is the main area of functionality for POOL-MEISTER.
From the Weekly Menu, game lines for the week are entered (if playing
with a line), the weekly game form is printed, player's picks are
recorded, game scores are entered and the week's winner is determined.

Context-Sensitive Help

POOL-MEISTER can give you windowed detailed help no matter where you are
in the program. The context-sensitive help facility always knows "what
you are doing" and displays help on the current task.

STARTING POOL-MEISTER

What You'll Need -

- Computer: an IBM PC, XT, AT or PS/2 computer (or a computer that is
compatible with any of these).

- Memory: at least 192K of available RAM.

- Operating System: PC-DOS or MS-DOS, version 2.0 or later.

- Disk Drives: at least one floppy-disk drive, or at least one
floppy-disk drive and one hard-disk drive.

- Display: A monochrome, CGA, EGA or VGA monitor and compatible
adapter; or a monitor and display adapter compatible with any of
these.

- Printer: POOL-MEISTER does not use control codes or the extended
character set in printing reports and should be compatible with any
parallel port attached printer.

Installing POOL-MEISTER

If you received POOL-MEISTER directly from FLAMINGO SOFTWARE, there is
very little to do to install it. Simply copy the contents of the
distribution disk onto a working diskette or your hard disk.

If you downloaded POOL-MEISTER from a BBS or on-line service, it probably
came in archived format. A file archive, usually identified with a file
extension of .ARC, is a group of related files that have been collected
together and then compressed into a single file. Before using the files
within the archive they must be un-archived into their original and
separate form. This can be achieved using any of a number of "archive
utilities" such as ARC.EXE (from System Enhancement Associates), ARCE.EXE
(also from SEA) or PKXARC.COM (from PKWARE). These programs use
different command syntax; to get a listing of the proper commands to use,
execute the program without any parameters.

4

Setting-Up Your Computer

To run POOL-MEISTER most efficiently, you'll need to make sure that your
CONFIG.SYS file contains certain commands.

To set up a hard-disk system -

The CONFIG.SYS file, if it exists, is located in the root directory of
your disk. If you're not familiar with this file, consult your DOS
manual to see how to modify this file as recommended below.

POOL-MEISTER needs to access several files at the same time. So that
these files can be accessed, you need to include this command in your
CONFIG.SYS file:

FILES=20

To speed up accessing your disk, include a BUFFERS command in your
CONFIG.SYS file:

BUFFERS=20

When POOL-MEISTER needs to access files it uses for the players, teams,
games, weekly picks and set-up, it looks only in the current directory
(and creates them there if they do not exist). No facility is currently
provided to keep the data files on a separate disk or directory from the
program.

To set up a floppy-disk system -

Include a FILES and BUFFERS command in your CONFIG.SYS file, as described
above for a hard disk system. If you're not familiar with the CONFIG.SYS
file, consult your DOS manual to see how to create or modify it.

Starting POOL-MEISTER

- Make sure the DOS prompt, e.g., C>, is showing on your screen.

- Change to the drive and/or directory where your POOL-MEISTER files
reside.

- Type POOLMSTR and press [Enter].

The POOL-MEISTER opening screen appears on your screen.

- Press any key to display the POOL-MEISTER logo screen.

This screen describes the terms under which you may use POOL-MEISTER.

- Press any key to display the POOL-MEISTER Main Menu.

5

The POOL-MEISTER Main Menu is displayed. If POOL-MEISTER is being
accessed for the first time, the Set-Up screen is displayed letting you
modify the default options.

Setting-Up POOL-MEISTER

If you're just starting with POOL-MEISTER for the first time, you'll
probably want to use it as soon as possible. Although POOL-MEISTER lets
you change the default options for the specific type of pool you want to
play, the only thing you must do in order to get started is make sure
that POOL-MEISTER knows which parallel port your printer is using. To do
so, access POOL-MEISTER Set-Up (F5) after starting POOL-MEISTER.

Exiting POOL-MEISTER

To exit POOL-MEISTER and return to DOS:

- Press F10 from the Main Menu.

Note: The Esc key is part of POOL-MEISTER's help facility. Pressing Esc
displays information about whatever you're doing. For example, if you
were to press Esc with the Main Menu on the screen, POOL-MEISTER would
display help information about the options available from the Main Menu.
Context-sensitive help is provided for every POOL-MEISTER option.

To clear the Help text window from your screen:

- Press [Esc].

USING POOL-MEISTER

POOL-MEISTER navigation is controlled through the use of the function
keys. Two menus - the Main Menu and Weekly Menu - provide access to all
POOL-MEISTER functions.

POOL-MEISTER Set-Up

To set-up parameters under which the pool will be played, select item F5
on the Main Menu. If you are using POOL-MEISTER for the first time, or
the set-up file is not found on the logged drive/directory, POOL-MEISTER
will automatically display the Set-Up screen. The POOL-MEISTER Set-Up
screen is used to set-up parameters under which the pool will be played.
The first item (Play With A Line) is selected when point spreads are to
be used in determining whether a player has selected the winning team.
For example, if the home team is favored by 3 1/2 points and the home
team wins by only 3 points, then a player selecting the home team would
not be awarded the pick for that game.

The second item (Confidence Pool) allows the players to make their
selections with "confidence" points. Using confidence points, the
players rank their selections based on the confidence they have for their
picks on each game. For example, the game a player has the least
confidence in would be ranked 1, the one with the most confidence would
be ranked highest (14 if playing 14 games). The winner in a Confidence
Pool is determined by who has the most points for the week. By selecting
"N" for Confidence Pool, the pool will be played as a simple won/lost
pool.

The third item (Points For Ties) is used in those cases where a game ends
in a tie. In a won/lost pool, the game will be awarded to a player
regardless of the team selected. In a Confidence Pool, a player's
confidence points will be awarded regardless of the team selected. By
selecting "N", games ending in a tie will result in a wash for all
players.

The fourth item (Tie Breaker) is used in those cases where a weekly pool

ends with more than one winner. Total points for the last game in the
week (i.e., Monday Night for Pro games) are selected by each player. The
winner closest to the Total Points breaks the tie.

The fifth item (Use Player Initials) is used in POOL-MEISTER reporting.
By selecting this item, Player's initials are substituted in all POOL-
MEISTER reports where Player Name would normally appear.

The next two setup parameters are for printer output. The first is a
number from 1 to 3 corresponding to LPT1, LPT2 or LPT3. The next
parameter is the number of Lines/Page for printed output. The final
parameter (POOL-MEISTER) is used on the Game Form so players will know to

7

whom the form is to be returned.

When all changes have been made to the default options, pressing F10 will
save them on a permanent basis in the set-up file on the logged drive and
directory.

Player Maintenance

The next step is to establish the Player file. Select Main Menu item F2
to add the names of the players in the pool. This file may be modified
at any time, although players may not be deleted if they are playing in
the current week's pool.

The Player Maintenance screen is used for maintaining information on the
players in the pool. Player Initials, Name (enter last name first for
proper sorting), Phone No. or Ext. and Room No. are modifiable through
this screen. Press F1 to add a new player; Press F2 to update an
existing player (Y-T-D pool totals are also modifiable for error
correction); Press F3 to delete a player (players in the current week's
pool may not be deleted); Press F4 to sort the players by Initials, Name,
or Games Won if not playing a confidence pool or Total Points if playing
a confidence pool; Press F5 to print players by the current sort. The
Player Listing will print either Player Initials or Name based upon the
selection made on the POOL-MEISTER Set-Up screen. Press F10 to save any
changes made or F9 to maintain the player file as it was before entering
this screen.

Team Maintenance

To make changes to the team file, select Main Menu item F3, Team
Maintenance. The Team Maintenance screen is used for maintaining the
team information for pool processing. Team Name, Team Type (Pro, College
or Other), Team Conference and Team Division are added through this
screen. Press F1 to add a new team; Press F2 to update an existing team
(Y-T-D team totals are also modifiable); Press F3 to delete a team.
Teams may be added at any time; teams may not be deleted if a game exists
for that team. Press F4 to print team standings based upon Y-T-D totals.
Press F5 to print the teams sorted by Team Type and Team Name. Press F10
to save any changes made or F9 to maintain the team file as it was before
entering this screen.

8

Game Maintenance

To make changes to the Game file, select Main Menu item F4, Game
Maintenance. The Game Maintenance screen is used for maintaining the
games selected for weekly pool processing. Press F1 to add a new game.
Home and Visitor Teams are selected from the Team File by pointing the
high-lighted line at the appropriate team. Team Types must be the same
and, of course, a team cannot play against itself. Game Date, Game Time,
Line (if playing with a line as determined from the Set-Up screen) and
Home & Visitor Scores may be entered. Games are sorted by Team Type,
Game Date and Game Time.

Press F2 to update game information. Teams playing in the selected game,
however, may not be changed. Press F3 to delete a game. If the game
falls within the current week's pool and a pool is in process, a warning
message will be displayed suggesting that the game not be deleted. If
the game is deleted, player picks for the week will be updated removing
their selection.

Press F5 to print the games. Games may be printed to the screen, disk or
printer (LPT1, LPT2 or LPT3 as defined in the Set-Up screen). Press F10
to save any changes made or F9 to leave without saving.

Weekly Functions

To perform the weekly functions, select item F1 on the Main Menu. These
include: F1 - Setting up a weekly game file, F2 - Printing forms for
players to enter their picks on, F3 - Player picks entry, F4 - Weekly
game maintenance (line and score updates), and F5 - Player point
computation and ranking.

Weekly Game Set-Up

The first step in weekly processing is to select the Start Date and Game
Type for the week's pool. Press F1 and Pool-Meister will offer a
suggested date and game type for the week's pool. If a pool is in
process, you may start a new pool, but the weekly file of player picks
will be deleted.

By pressing F10 on the Weekly Game Set-Up screen, those games falling
within the week chosen and with the game type chosen will be selected for
weekly pool processing. Game Lines/Scores may be updated and general
Team and Game processing may be performed. Game Lines/Scores may also be
updated by pressing F4 from the Weekly Menu.

9

Print Weekly Game Form

Once all games have been selected and Game Lines updated (if playing with
a line), the next step in weekly processing is to Print the Weekly Game
Form. This form is used by the pool players to select their weekly
picks.

The Game Form may be printed for any week's games. If running a pool for
Pro games, it is a good idea to print the Game Form for the next week's
pool to be distributed along with the interim Monday standings.

The Game Form screen requires entry of a date and time for when the form
is to be returned and, optionally, allows up to four lines of messages to
be printed. The Game Form will indicate to whom the form is to be
returned (the Pool-Meister) and may be printed to the screen, disk or
printer.

Player Picks

After pool players have returned their game forms, option F3 (Update
Player Picks) is used to enter their selections. The Player Picks Update
screen is formatted like the game form for entering each player's picks.
Player picks may be printed from this screen for distribution prior to
the weekly games.

Picks are added by pressing F1 after highlighting the appropriate player
from the selection screen. Picks may be updated by pressing F2 and a
player's picks for the week may be deleted by pressing F3. Press F4 to
sort the players by Initials, Name, or Games Won if not playing a
confidence pool or Total Points if playing a confidence pool. An
asterisk at the end of each line indicates those players whose picks have
already been added.

If playing a confidence pool, each player's picks are entered using a
number from one to the number of games in the pool. For example, the
game a player has the least confidence in would be ranked 1, the one with
the most confidence would be ranked highest (14 if playing 14 games).
Each number is placed next to the team the player has selected.

If not playing a confidence pool, each player's picks are entered placing
an "X" next to the team the player has selected.

If playing a tie breaker, the total points for the last game in the week
is entered at the bottom of the screen.

Once all player picks have been added/updated, press F5 to print the
weekly picks for distribution prior to the week's games. The Player
Picks listing will print either Player Initials or Name based upon the
selection made on the Pool-Meister Set-Up screen. Press F10 to save any
changes made or F9 to maintain the player's weekly picks as they were
before entering this screen.

10

Game Lines/Scores

The next step in weekly processing is to enter the game scores by
pressing F4 (Update Game Line/Score). The Update Game Line/Score screen
is used for entering game lines (if playing a line) and game scores once
games have been completed. All games within a week's pool may be updated
in sequence by pressing F1. Individual games may be updated by pressing
F2. Home and visitor teams, game date and game time may not be changed
using this screen. Press F10 to save any changes made or F9 to maintain
the game lines/scores as they were before entering this screen.

Weekly Point Totals

Once game scores have been entered, select option F5 (Weekly Point
Totals) for determining the week's winner(s) or leader(s). Interim
results may be calculated using option F8. For example, on Monday when
playing a Pro schedule, interim player standings may be printed which
include picks and current totals. Upon completion of all games, player
standings may be printed and the weekly totals may be added to year-to-
date totals. If weekly totals are added to year-to-date totals, weekly
processing is completed and the weekly file is erased in preparation for
the next week's processing. Y-T-D totals are kept for players and teams.

Learning POOL-MEISTER Features

POOL-MEISTER comes with a 20K on-line help file (called POOLMSTR.HLP) to
speed you on your way to learning the system. To access the help
facility simply press Esc at any point in the program. Help text
specific to the task at hand will be displayed. This on-line help
facility is more than adequate for learning the majority of POOL-MEISTER
features. General help is available from the menu screens using option
F9; general help provides an overview of all functions available from
each menu.
