SOME NOTES ON NEW ST. ANDREWS

Course Name: New St. Andrews Golf Club
Location: Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
Length/Par: 3326-3412-6738 / 36-36-72
Designer: Jack Nicklaus
Difficulty: Moderate - Jack N. shot a 69 with normal greens
and no wind
Source: "The Golf Courses of Jack Nicklaus"
Pubished by Gallery Books, New York, NY
JNUG Design: Jay Johnson (aka "Jaybird")
This is another in my continuing series of golf courses in
the orient. It also happens to be another in my series of
courses designed by Jack Nicklaus. Unlike many of JN's
designs, this one is relatively short at a nominal length
of 6738 yards. Do not, however, equate the lack of extreme
length with ease of play. I rate the course as moderate. It
is of a different nature than, say, Melrose or Golden
Valley. Most of the holes are of the "Hit it to the open
areas you see on the overhead view." variety. Hole # 6
does require care off the tee as the fairway is narrow and
the water awaits mis-hits. Hole # 2 is another "sneaky"
tough hole - it looks a lot easier than it is if you have
a tendency to overswing on the tee. The bunker in the elbow
of the green on hole # 13 can be extremely difficult to get
out of, so do try to stay out.
That's all for tips and whatnot, so here's the yardage
card (Pro Tees):

I welcome feedback of any kind on this or any of the
courses I've put out there. I do ask that you be specific
- telling me that a hole (or even an entire course) sucks
doesn't help much unless you specify how it sucks. But
hey, you've got the JNUG Designer, so feel free to make
the changes you feel are needed.
I also welcome suggestions as to courses that you want
to see done and this applies to types of trees that will
be appearing in future TREESn files.
