Contents of the README file

This is version 3.00 of GNU Chess, It is an official release
brought to you by contributors in the GNU community. The
distribution can be obtained on Internet from:

prep.ai.mit.edu:/u2/emacs/gnuchess-3.00.tar.Z

(please be patient as the file will appear at this location.)

NEW FEATURES (compared to 2.00)

* ECO/Informator move entry syntax.

* MSDOS ANSI display mode (uxdsp.c).

* smaller data structures for MSDOS.

* retained hash table between moves.

* Improved Xchess behavior under X11/R4 and GCC.

Ways the program could be improved:

1) Regression testing of strength against a bank
of positions. The regression should compare
performance between two releases, assess
solution times, speed in nodes per second,
accuracy of evaluation, and depth and then
produce a comparison table, along with a final
assessment of which version is superior.

2) Complete rework of the book, eliminating all
illegal moves, providing a score for each
variation with support code to enter variations
based on the score.

I figured most of the MSDOS people out there would like a copy of the GNUCHESS
3.0, but didn't need the hassle of all the X-windows stuff, and the hassle of
having the file in tar format. So what this is is the GNUCHESS 3.0
distribution, taken out of tar format, with the X-WINDOWS files deleted, some
minor changes to get it to compile with MSC 5.1 (large model), and added an
executable that requires ANSI to be loaded.

Have fun,

Michael L. Kaufman [71610,431]
