Harpooner:

As part of the continueing improvements to the Scenario Warehouse BBS (SWBBS) we are now announcing the completion of our connection to the WWIV international network. WWIVnet is a voluntary association of bulletin boards using WWIV software participating in a network by calling one another to facilitate the transfer of electronic mail (e-mail) and message bases (subs/bullettin boards). At the current time, WWIVnet is the second largest network running on private computers in the United States. It has over 750 systems located in the United States, Canada, England, W. Germany, Italy, Mexico and Japan.

Through this network, a user of any of the bulletin boards that are
members may send email to a user of any other board. A user may also
post on a message base which may be read by the users of systems which
subscribe to that message base; thus, many of the networked subs have
international distribution. Because this system of communication is
read by others and because it has an effect on systems other than the
one on which it originates, a spirit of cooperation must prevail.

What does this mean to you as a member of the Scenario Warehouse BBS. This means that you will be able to send e-mail to any other member of the BBS by calling a local WWIVnet BBS near you (hopefully it will only be a local distance call) and sign on as a member. From this local BBS just send a e-mail to the Scenario Warehouse BBS member by using his SWBBS member number and adding on the identifing node number for the SWBBS (our node number is @7851). Suppose you wish to send a e-mail to Gary Miller SWBBS# 118. You call your local WWIVnet BBS and use the "e"option from the main menu for sending e-mail, when prompted for user ID type in 118@7851. This will send the e-mail to Gary miller here at SWBBS. If Gary is also a member of a local WWIVnet BBS he uses to facilitate the network and you know his local BBS node number then you can send it directly to him there. This network connection for sending e-mail will facilitate the sending of feedback of scenarios you have played by a SWBBS member and save phone costs. Such mail may be sent by the user in one of several ways. The user could simply use the E option to send email and then address it properly. The user might use the A response to send a private message to someone who has posted on a national message base, or the user might use either the A or S to respond to a message received privately from another system. Any of these methods will result in netmail being sent to another system.

The network connection also gives us an added enhancement (which I think is the best part of the network connection). It allows a sub/bullettin board to be posted over the network and any messages and posts made to it will be passed along to any other WWIV BBS which is hosting it. This greatly enhances our BBS in that most members have to call long distance and don't want to spend their money reading bullettins on a long distance call. The Scenario Warehouse will be hosting a sub/bullettin board named "Harpooner's Scenario Warehouse". This will be a bullettin board where any subject concerning Harpoon can be discussed.

The Harpooner's Scenario Warehouse sub/bullettin board is not automaticaly posted on all WWIVnet BBS's. The SYSOP of a BBS must request that he be able to subscribe to the Harpooner's Scenario Warehouse BB. So what you must do is find a WWIVnet BBS local to you which is convienent for your phone charges (should be the same one as you picked above for sending e-mail). Sign on as a member and leave a note to the SYSOP that you would like to see the Harpooner's Scenario Warehouse BB posted on his BBS. Tell him to send a e-mail to JIVA 1@7851 requesting it. Also send a e-mail from that same BBS to me 1@7851 informing me you have requested that Harpooner's Scenario Warehouse be posted (indicate the BBS name and Net node number). I will also get ion touch with the SYSOP to push him into posting it.

The WWIVnet we are connected to is a great enhancement to our BBS and if we use it to our advantage we can all enjoy our little club with more fun and exchanging ideas with less cost on phone bills. The one thing which has held back our BBS from being complete is that all of our members are spread across the country and must make expensive calls if they wish to use the bullettin board to it's full extent to exchange ideas and leave messages with the other members. This area has not expanded and been taken full advantage of by the members for this reason. Now ith the WWIVnet connection we can all enjoy it at a reasonable cost.

So I urge you to find a local WWIVnet BBS and get set up on it. If you do not have the time just let me know the name of a local WWIVnet BBS and I will get in touch with it's SYSOP and get things set up. A listing of most WWIVnet subs and their phone numbers can be found by hitting the "B" option from the main menu (this gives you a list of BBS's) and hit the NET option. Look through the list and find one in your area code or close enough you feel comfortable with. If you don't find on close enough I suggest you find a WWIV (or any BBS for that matter) in your area code and inquire to the SYSOP about joining the network. The cost is nothing if not minimal since the data is sent along in hops over local calls through the NET.

This message can be downloaded for your info using the filename BBNET.ZIP/ARC and also posted in the "G" information files section under help hints.
