GENERAL INFORMATION:

CROSSWORD POWER is specifically designed to be simple to understand
and easy to use. It requires very little knowledge of computers.
No commands need to be memorized. A status line is displayed at
the bottom of the screen. The current word list name is displayed
in the status line. The menus allow easy movement through the
program so you can begin making activities in just a few minutes.

To move between the menus at the top of the screen, you can use the
left or right arrow keys, a mouse, or hold the Alternate key down
and press the first letter of the menu. Within the vertical menu,
use the up or down arrow keys, or press the first letter of the
selection to move from selection to selection. Once your
selection has been hi-lighted, press the Enter key to confirm the
selection and continue. Choices with bullets (or red on a color
monitor) can not be selected until other actions have been taken.

EDITING WORDS, CLUES, AND SETTING INFORMATION:
The Home key will place the cursor at the beginning of the current
edit field. The End key will place the cursor at the end of the
current edit field. Alt-D will delete the current edit field. The
left and right arrow keys move the cursor within the edit field.
Control-left and control-right arrow keys move the cursor to
the far left or right sides of the window. The up and down arrow
keys move the cursor between edit fields.

SPECIAL SYMBOLS
Alternate-F1 displays foreign language codes, Shift-F1 displays
math symbols, and Control-F1 displays the Greek characters when
appropriate. The special symbols can be included in your
vocabulary words and clues by holding the alternate key down and
entering the 3 digit number on the number pad of the IBM
keyboard. Supported symbols are located in the charts on pages 19

NEW:
This selection removes all vocabulary words and clues from the
computer's memory. The name of the word list is displayed at the
bottom of the screen. This line is called the status line.

ABOUT THE WORD LISTS:
Each word list can have up to 100 vocabulary words and related
clues. Files created by CROSSWORD POWER may be copied and erased
using normal DOS commands. Word lists can be copied using the Back
Up selection of the Extra Menu. Word Lists can be deleted using
the Delete WordList selection of the Extra Menu. Word lists
created with CROSSWORD POWER are 100% compatible for use with
VOCABULARY POWER, also from WISCO Computing.

Word lists use the extension .WL Word list files are saved as
ASCII files to make it easier to check spelling. When the spell
checker of your word processor is used, make sure to save the word
list file in ASCII format. Many word processors use special
formatting codes when files are saved the regular way. Saving
of the file in ASCII format prevents saving of the formatting
codes.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 6

ABOUT THE PUZZLE WORDS (ANSWERS):
Puzzle words may be up to 17 characters long. Any character except
the space, comma, asterisk *, double quote ", vertical bar |, and
number sign # can be used in a vocabulary word. Numbers can also
be used to create math puzzles.

ABOUT THE CLUES (DEFINITIONS):
Each clue (definition) can be up to 100 characters long. Long
clues are automatically divided if necessary. Any character except
the double quote " and comma can be used in a clue.

WORD AND CLUE FORMATTING:
The words can be changed back and forth between capital and lower
case letters. It is easier to work with all capital letters.
However, sometimes lower case letters are necessary. For example,
in chemistry, CO means Carbon Monoxide and Co means Cobalt. This
program treats capital letters and lower case letters as two
different letters. This means that words will not intersect at a
common letter if one is a capital letter and the other is lower
case letter.

HINTS:
Placing the longest words into a word list first does not guarantee
that more total words will be placed into a word search.

Each time a word list is randomized, the order of the vocabulary
words and clues is changed.

Different puzzles can be used by teachers to stress the same
vocabulary words but wanting to give students different puzzles.
The different puzzles allow verbal interaction to learn the puzzle
vocabulary words and clues.

The F1 function key can be pressed to reveal a help screen to
provide more information about editing the vocabulary words and
clues. Alternate-F1 displays foreign language codes, Shift-F1
displays math symbols, and Control-F1 displays Greek characters
while editing.

AUTOMATIC ARRANGEMENT:
When selected, a single crossword puzzle is created using your word
list(s), puzzle size, and starting square. Your words are
automatically placed into the puzzle. The placement of the words
is determined by the starting square (from the Main Settings), and
the order of words in the word list.

ADD WORDLIST TO DISPLAYED PUZZLE:
Only identical letters will intersect in a puzzle. All letters of
the words must be either all lower or upper case (capitals). If
the words from the first word list are all upper case, the words
from additional word lists that are added to the puzzle must also
be upper case. To quickly change the letter case, use one of the
options on the manipulate selection on the FILE MENU.

UNUSED WORDS DISPLAYED:
This option allows you to display and print words from the word
list that were not inserted into the puzzle.

SELF-DESIGNED PUZZLE:
You can design a complete puzzle from a blank grid. This puzzle is
saved as an unfinished puzzle. The unfinished puzzle is loaded and
saved from this menu. The puzzle is saved with the .UNF extension.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 8

EDITING PUZZLE LETTERS:
This selection lets you type puzzle words directly into the puzzle.

You can also erase puzzle words with this selection. After making
this selection, the flashing cursor will be located in the upper
left corner of the puzzle. The HOME key can be used to return to
this corner. The four arrow directional keys can be used
to move to the puzzle position to enter or change a puzzle letter.

When the cursor is at the location to be changed, enter the new
letter. If you make a mistake, and/or wish to delete a puzzle
letter, you should enter a question mark (?) for the new letter.
A blank space will replace the old letter. After pressing the END
key to leave the Editing mode, asterisks will be entered at the
beginning and end of each puzzle word. You should save these
puzzle words. Do not put more than 80 words in the puzzle.

EDITING UNFINISHED CLUES:
This selection allows you to enter or revise clues in unfinished
puzzles and puzzles created by automatic arrangement.

SAVING THE UNFINISHED PUZZLE:
The Unfinished puzzle can also be saved from this menu selection.
Unfinished puzzles use the same base name as the word list name.
The extension of the file name is .UNF

CREATE WORDLIST FROM DISPLAYED PUZZLE:
This selection is used only if you are designing a puzzle from
scratch or attempting to list all words used in an unfinished
puzzle. Puzzle words are saved to make it easier to enter related
clues. This selection makes it easier to use these words in our
companion product VOCABULARY POWER.

PRINTING THE STUDENT AND TEACHER PUZZLES:
The student copy or teacher copy (answer key) for the puzzle will
be printed when this option is selected. The boxes will be
automatically numbered. The puzzle clues will also be
automatically numbered, arranged and printed below the puzzle. The
teacher puzzle places the letters in the puzzle grid.

PRINTING THE UNFINISHED PUZZLE:
An Unfinished Puzzle will be printed with this selection. The
unused letter squares are not shaded in. Unfinished puzzles are
used when designing puzzles without using automatic word placement.

PRINTING THE PUZZLE CLUES:
Only the puzzle clues will be printed using the arrangement
determined by the Settings Menu.

BOTH STUDENT & TEACHER:
The teacher puzzle (answer key) will be printed with each student
puzzle when this selection is made.

SAVING STUDENT AND TEACHER PUZZLES TO DISK:
You can create an ASCII file of a teacher or student puzzle for
importing to another program. Complete puzzles and clues can also
be saved to disk as a WordPerfect 5.1 or 6.0b DOS and Windows
version 6.0a macros.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 10

ASCII FILE NAMING DETAILS:
When a puzzle is saved as an ASCII file, the first part of the file
name uses the same name as the word list. The extension part (the
three letters after the period) varies depending on the whether the
puzzle is the teacher or student copy. The extension .PZT is the
teacher copy of the puzzle, .PZS is the student copy of the puzzle,
and .PZC is the extension used for the clues.

EGA GRAPHICS PUZZLE DISPLAY:
If your monitor can display EGA screens (SCREEN 9), then the
student, teacher, and unfinished puzzles can be graphically
displayed. The graphically displayed puzzle may be screen captured
by other programs and imported into most desk top publishing and
some word processing programs.

WORDPERFECT - CREATE MACRO:
CROSSWORD POWER can write WordPerfect (DOS and Windows) macros to
create the crossword puzzle and clues. This feature allows
formatted puzzles to be easily imported into WordPerfect documents.

When a puzzle is displayed, this menu selection can be made. The
macro will be written to the drive and subdirectory entered with
the MAIN SETTINGS MENU. Choose to print either the Student,
Teacher, or Unfinished puzzle. The macro is saved using the word
list name with the extension .WPM. The Windows version of
WordPerfect uses the extension .WCM For example, if HOMONYM.WL
is used to create the puzzle, the WordPerfect macro will be
HOMONYM.WPM In WordPerfect, press Alt-F10, enter the name
of the wordlist (no extension), and press enter.
The Windows version of WordPerfect uses the extension .WCM

The Word Perfect macro uses the Table feature, with shading for the
puzzle grid. Clues printed below the puzzle use the columns
feature of WordPerfect if Side by Side was chosen on the Main
Settings of the MAIN SETUP MENU.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 11

Macros are supported for the EpsonLQ, ProprinterX24E, DeskJet 500,
LaserJet II, and LaserJet III printers. The same printer must be
selected for both WordPerfect and Crossword Power.

These fonts are supported on the various printers. Every possible
effort was made to ensure the macro works with the simplest printer
configuration. In designing any program, there are inevitable
trade-offs between simplicity and flexibility.

PUZZLE SIZE:
Puzzle size may be varied from 3 to 24 columns wide and from 3 to
17 rows high. A typical puzzle with clues usually fits on the
normal size 8 1/2" by 11" paper. Puzzles are automatically sized
before printing. Automatic sizing eliminates all outside rows and
columns that do not contain letters.

STARTING SQUARE:
The first puzzle word in your word list is placed horizontally at
the starting row and column position before trying to find
intersecting words. When searching to find the best puzzle, the
starting square is automatically changed to Column 1, Row 1. When
the searching is completed, the starting square is set to the row
and column that created the best (most puzzle words) puzzle.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 14

DRIVE CONTAINING WORD LISTS:
Select the Drive Letter and subdirectory. To keep the word lists
in the same directory as the CROSSWORD POWER program files, delete
the displayed information by pressing Alternate-D. (Holding the
Alternate Key down while pressing the letter D).

PRINTING THE PUZZLE HEADING:
The topic of the word list will always be printed on the left side
above the puzzle. The three additional headings can also be
printed above the student puzzle when Yes is chosen.

SEARCH METHOD TO FIND BEST PUZZLE:
The Total method examines all possible starting square
combinations. The Quick method examines about 40 starting square
combinations. The first combination places the first word from
your word list in the upper left corner of the puzzle. Then
attempts are made to find intersecting words. The program will
remember how many words were placed in each puzzle. Then the first
word is moved to a new starting square. The different placement
will cause different letter and word intersections. This results
in a different number of total words placed in the puzzles.

INCLUDE EXTRA SPACE BETWEEN PUZZLE & CLUES:
Selecting YES adds an extra line feed (blank line) between the
puzzle grid and the puzzle clues.

CLUE LINES PER INCH:
Normal spacing is 6 clues lines per inch. Changing to 8 lines per
inch may prevent a puzzle grid and clues from printing on separate
pages.

PUZZLE CLUE ARRANGEMENT:
Full line printing prints all across clues before printing the down
clues. If Side by Side is selected, across and down clues will be
automatically balanced and formatted in two columns below each
puzzle grid.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 15

AUTOMATICALLY CAPITALIZE PUZZLE LETTERS:
Only identical letters will intersect in a puzzle. All letters of
the words must be either all lower or upper case. This setting
determines the letter case of the words entered into the word lists
and puzzle squares. To quickly change the letter case, use one of
the options on the manipulate selection on the FILE MENU.

WORD PROCESSOR MACRO SUBDIRECTORY:
Macros are keyboard shortcuts to entering a long string of commands
and text. CROSSWORD POWER creates macros to automate the process
of cutting, copying, and pasting a crossword puzzle and clues into
a word processor document. Your word processor must be installed
on your hard drive to use this feature of CROSSWORD POWER. At the
current time, WordPerfect DOS Versions 5.1 and 6.0b and Windows
Version 6.0a are supported. WISCO Computing intends to support other
word processors in future releases.

PRINTER TO PRINT PUZZLE & CLUES:
The following printer command sets are supported by CROSSWORD
POWER. Most printers can support one or more of these command
sets.

Epson LQ - 24 pin - A C S HP LaserJet III/4 - A Sha Pat
Epson FX - 9 pin - A C S IBM Proprinter X24E - A C S
HP DeskJet 500 - A IBM Proprinter 9 pin - A C S
HP LaserJet II - A Sha Pat Generic - A

For an unlisted printer, check your printer manual to determine
which command set your printer can use. Additional printers may be
supported.

PUZZLE AND CLUE PITCH:
Select a printer pitch supported by your printer. CROSSWORD POWER
supports 10, 12, 15, and 17 pitch. Ten pitch refers to 10
characters per inch. The larger the pitch number, the more
characters are printed per inch. CROSSWORD POWER automatically
sets the point size for the LaserJet III/4, LaserJet II,
and DeskJet 500 printers based on the pitch setting (10cpi=12pt,
12cpi=10pt, 15cpi=8pt, and 17cpi=8.5pt).

CROSSWORD POWER Page 17

SET PRINTER TO LETTER QUALITY (BOLD):
Depending on the printer, the puzzles may be printed in either
draft of letter quality mode.

SHEET FEEDER :
You will be asked if a sheet feeder is attached to the printer.
This selection prevents an extra page from being ejected from your
printer.

IGNORE PRINTER STATUS :
CROSSWORD POWER checks the status of the parallel printer port
before sending any data. This normally works quite well. However,
if you map a parallel port to a serial one by the MODE command, or
if you have a non-standard, or very fast computer, you may
experience problems. CROSSWORD POWER might actually think that
your printer port (LPT1:) is busy when you know it is not. If you
have printer problems like this, select Y for Yes to ignore the
printer status.

LPT PRINTER PORT:
This Number indicates where the selected printer is connected to
your computer. Most printers are connected to port (LPT1:). If
you have additional parallel printer ports, you may use printer
port 2 or 3.

FILL METHOD
SCII, HECKERED, OR OLID
If the listed printer has a C or an S after the printer name, the
unused letter squares can be filled with a checkered or solid
pattern. The LaserJet III does not support an ASCII character
filling the unused letter squares. To create solid squares on the
LaserJet III set the shading to 100%

ASCII FILL CHARACTER NUMBER (32 to 254):
This number is used when an ASCII fill of the unused letter squares
was selected. For example, ASCII 219 results in a solid black
square. A checkerboard pattern results from choosing ASCII 176
(lightest checkerboard), ASCII 177 (medium) or ASCII 178 (darkest
checerboard). Consult your DOS manual for a chart of ASCII numbers
and characters.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 18

SELECTING HP FONTS:
Internal fonts are fonts provided with the printers. Ten pitch
Courier and 16.66 (condensed) pitch Lineprinter fonts are provided
with the LaserJet III, LaserJet II, and DeskJet 500 printers. The
LaserJet III also includes a 12 pitch Courier and two scalable
fonts (CG Times and Univers). The scalable fonts can be used
with the LaserJet III printer. The point size will be determined
by the selected pitch.

CROSSWORD POWER includes fixed width soft fonts in 12 and 15 pitch
for the HP LaserJet II/III and HP DeskJet Printers. CROSSWORD
POWER transfers (downloads) the correct soft font to the HP
LaserJet and DeskJet printers as needed. Early DeskJet models
required the additional memory cartridge to download
these soft fonts.

When a puzzle is printed with the LaserJet printer, a file is saved
to disk and CROSSWORD POWER copies that file to the printer. This
extra step actually reduces the time needed to print the crossword
puzzle and clues.

WISCO Computing intends to support additional soft fonts in future
releases.

SYMBOL SET:
Three Symbol Sets (10=PC-8, 11=PC-8 D/N, and 12=PC-850) include the
line-draw characters that are necessary to create the puzzle grid
for DeskJet and LaserJet II printers. If you are using a LaserJet
II compatible printer, make sure your printer supports the symbol
set (and pitch) you have chosen. If the 12 or 15 pitch Courier
soft fonts are used, the Symbol Set will be automatically changed
to 10.

Symbol Set 10 (PC-8) is supported by most printers. The printed
character set is identical to what is displayed. Printed output
from Symbol Sets 11 (PC-8 D/N) and 12 (PC-850) does not match the
screen display but includes different characters. Choose the
symbol set that best meets your needs.

HP LASERJET TYPEFACE NUMBER:
Typeface refers to the unique design of the characters. The
following typefaces were included with the LaserJet III:
0=LinePrinter, 3=Courier, 5= CG Times, and 52=Univers.

CROSSWORD POWER Page 19

SPECIAL CHARACTERS:
Foreign language, Greek, and math symbols can be printed in both
VOCABULARY POWER and CROSSWORD POWER, provided your printer
supports these characters. When entering or revising your words
and clues, help can be displayed.

Alternate-F1 displays foreign language codes, Shift-F1 displays
math symbols, and Control-F1 displays the Greek characters when
appropriate. These characters can be included in your words and
clues by holding the alternate key down and entering the 3 digit
number on the number pad of the IBM keyboard.

Most printers support international character sets. These
character sets are the most commonly supported by compatible
printers. To add to the confusion, different manufacturers call
the character sets by different names. This chart includes the
PC-8 characters displayed on the PC screen.

The Hewlett-Packard PC-8 D/N set modifies 11 characters. The Epson
(Norway) and IBM (Norway) sets modify fewer characters from the
chart.

DeskJet and LaserJet printers can also use the 12=PC-850 to support
the line draw characters and the foreign language characters. The
largest selection of printable characters is included with the
PC-850 Symbol Set. This Symbol set is not supported on all Deskjet
and LaserJet compatible printers. In addition, the PC-850 symbols
printed will not match the PC-8 symbols that are displayed.

This chart summarizes the 3 digit numbers from Hewlett-Packard's
PC-850 Symbol Set for LaserJet printers.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
