The files in this archive are part of a collection of Postscript
Type 1 fonts which I generated with Softype specifically for use
with Adobe Type Manager for Windows. Because of the large number
of fonts in the total collection and the arbitrary system that
Softype uses in naming its fonts, I haven't taken the time to
rename the fonts to reflect the typeface that it represents.

If you're unsure of the typeface family in this collection, here
are the families in the entire series:

ATMHELVE: Nimbus Sans (similar to Helvetica)*
ATMTIMES: Nimbus Roman (similar to Times Roman)*
ATMUNCIA: American Uncial
ATMOLIVE: Antique Olive*
ATMARIST: Ariston
ATMBLIPP: Blippo
ATMBODON: Bodoni*
ATMBROAD: Broadway
ATMBRUSH: Brush Script
ATMCOOPE: Cooper Black
ATMCOURI: Nimbus Mono (similar to Courier)*
ATMEURO: Eurostile*
ATMFLORA: Flora*
ATMFRUTI: Roissy (similar to Frutiger)*
ATMFUTUR: Futura*
ATMGARAM: Garamond and Garamond Medium*
ATMGOUDY: Goudy Old Style*
ATMKAUFM: Kaufmann Bold
ATMLATIN: Latin Wide
ATMMARIA: Mariage
ATMBASKE: Baskerville*
ATMCENTU: Century Schoolbook*
ATMOLDTO: Old Town
ATMPALAT: Palacio (similar to Palatino)*
ATMSLOGA: Slogan
ATMSTENC: Stencil
ATMSYMBO: Symbol
ATMUNIVE: Galaxy (similar to Universe)*

* Also includes bitmapped Laserjet fonts for the smaller sizes.

Each zip file should include the following, in addition to this
text file:

1. Postscript PFM and PFB files.

2. ATMINI.ADD, a text file which you can use in conjunction with
ATM.INI.

3. WFNTLOOK.UP, a text file which you can substitute for the file
of the same name in your Ventura directory if you are using
Ventura for Windows.

4. In some cases, a secondary ZIP file containing bitmapped fonts
for the Laserjet.

In most cases, I have generated not only the plain fonts, but
also condensed and extended variations. In addition, I have
generated "normal" oblique versions of the sans serif fonts
because Softype does not have italic versions of them. (In
ATMINI.ADD, these oblique fonts are listed as ITALIC and
BOLDITALIC, just as with the serif fonts, because Ventura for
Windows does not recognize oblique.)

All of these variations will work with both ATM and Ventura for
Windows. In fact, they represent almost every variation that you
can create in Softype that will, in fact, work with these two
programs.

Here is information about each type of file in this collection:

1. PFM and PFB Postscript files: These are the actual printer
fonts. You should install them from the ATM control panel.

2. ATMINI.ADD: This is a list of each individual Postscript font
in the series. While you should install the fonts from the ATM
control panel, so that they will also be reflected in WIN.INI,
you will find that ATM will assign names that differ slightly
from those in ATMINI.ADD. You should edit ATM.INI to reflect the
font names in ATMINI.ADD if you are using Ventura for Windows,
for the reasons given in the next paragraph.

3. WFNTLOOK.UP: Ventura for Windows uses this file. The root name
of every font that you intend to use with Ventura must be
included here EXACTLY as it appears in ATM.INI or Ventura will
not recognize the font, even though other Windows programs will.
You will notice that it was necessary to create unique names for
the condensed and expanded sets of each font. All of the fonts in
this series are listed in the included version of WFNTLOOK.UP as
they appear in ATMINI.ADD.

I recommend that you do one of two things to make sure that all
of your fonts will be recognized by Ventura:

A. Edit the font names in ATM.INI after you've installed
them to conform to the names in ATMINI.ADD, then
substitute my version of WFNTLOOK.UP for yours. (If you
have edited your version, be sure to transfer your edits
to the new file.)

OR:

B. Leave the font names in ATM.INI as ATM has installed
them and make the necessary changes to your copy of
WFNTLOOK.UP.

I recommend the first option as the safer one unless you have a
specific reason to use the second. Translated, that means that I
know the first one works. You may have problems with the second
method if ATM uses a font description, such as OBLIQUE, that
Ventura does not recognize.

4. SFP fonts: I have generated bitmapped SFP fonts for the
Laserjet of the better text fonts in the 6 to 12 pt. range. In
order to keep them separate from the Postscript fonts, I have put
them in a secondary compressed file with the prefix PCL. So, for
example, ATMBODON.ZIP will include another ZIP file,
PCLBODON.ZIP, in addition to the PFM, PFB, and text files.

Be sure to unpack the PCL archive to a different directory, since
it also includes PFM files which could conceivably have the same
name as one of the PFM files for the Postscript fonts.

I strongly recommend that you install the bitmapped fonts in
WIN.INI and activate the ATM option to use bitmaps. I have found
that this can cut printing time in half.

The PCL zips also include a text file, PCL.TXT, which is
Softype's way of keeping track of what's what. You'll need to
refer to this file to determine what you have. I recommend that
you copy this text file to the same directory as your Laserjet
fonts as it may help in the installation process.

Here's how to translate the listings, using some Century
Schoolbook fonts as an example:

"New Century Schlbk/700 0/6.00 pt/Portrait",ST000224.PFM,ST000224.SFP
"New Century Schlbk/700 1/8.00 pt/Portrait",ST000231.PFM,ST000231.SFP
"New Century Schlbk/400 0/10.00 pt/Portrait",ST000238.PFM,ST000238.SFP
"New Century Schlbk/400 1/12.00 pt/Portrait",ST000245.PFM,ST000245.SFP

The three-digit number following the first slash mark denotes
whether the fonts is normal or bold (700 = bold and 400 = normal).

The next single-digit number denotes whether the font is roman or
italic (0 = roman and 1 = italic).

The number following the second slash mark is the point size.

The filenames are listed following the commas.

So the first font listed above is 6 pt. bold, the second is 8 pt.
bold italic, the third is 10 pt. roman, and the fourth is 12 pt.
italic.

You're free to use these fonts any way you want to. Enjoy!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
