INTRO.
WHAT IS WhizQuiz?


WhizQuiz 6.0 is an easy to use multiple choice test program, useful
for a variety of purposes; parents can help their children with
their education, students can quiz themselves on a subject, and
Educators can test a student without being present.

WhizQuiz 6.0 goes beyond most multiple-choice quizzes, in that when
a wrong answer is given, the program displays up to 15 lines of
text. Normally this would be a paragraph or more from the
textbook that covers the subject. Optionally, the program can
also skip the text display or acknowledgment of a correct answer.

WhizQuiz 6.0 can be configured to record the incorrect answers, and
the grade.


UNPACKING AND SETUP


There should be five files in this archive; Whizquiz.exe, Quiz.exe,
Sample.qzz, Whizquiz.doc, and Response.

Whizquiz.exe is the executable file, to use this program type
Whizquiz at the prompt and press ENTER.

Quiz.exe is the student version of Whizquiz.

Sample.qzz is a sample quiz program.

Whizquiz.doc is this manual.

Response. is a list of responses to right and wrong answers.

WhizQuiz 6.0 requires another file to run, USER.CNF, which should not be in the archive. When you first run WhizQuiz 6.0 it will know that
you do not have USER.CNF on the disk or in the directory that you
have Whizquiz.exe in, and will prompt you for your choice of the
options.

You should see the display below when you first run WhizQuiz 6.0, just
press ENTER when you see it.

if they are OK. Press Y if that is what you want, a N
will take you thru the color selection again.


DEFAULT DRIVE

You are then asked for what drive or directory that you want to
store the quizzes and grade record file on.

The subdirectory slash is important; C:QUIZ is not the same as
C:\QUIZ\ for this program. The C:\QUIZ\ would be correct. To use
Drive B you would type B:\ at this screen.

This question decides if the 15 lines of text after a wrong answer
will be shown. If you select N then the program does not show if
the answer was right or wrong, and just goes to the next question.
The grade will be shown at the end of the Quiz.

Select Y for use as an educational tool. The text will be shown
after a wrong answer, and the correct answer has to be given to
go to the next question.

RECORDING THE GRADE

Next you will be asked if you want to keep a record file of the
wrong answers.

If you answer Y the program will ask the quiz taker for their
name and the name of the class at the beginning of the quiz.
It then records that information in a file called RECORD in
the default drive or directory. It will also record the Question
that was missed as well as the incorrect answer. The name of
the Quiz, the date and time are also recorded, and if the user ends
the Quiz too soon by pressing ESC.

You can use the DOS command TYPE RECORD to scroll the RECORD file
on the screen, or you could use a program like BROWSE or LIST
to view the information.

You could print the record by typing PRINT RECORD from the DOS
prompt.

If you answer N then no record is kept.

If you answer Y for yes, then a student using Quiz.exe must
enter the proper identification number or code to take the
quiz.

You will have to make a list of students and their ID's while
in Whizquiz. This file called NAME.LST must be on the disk
with the quizzes.

That is the end of the configuration. The configuration file,
USER.CNF is saved on the Drive and Directory that WhizQuiz 6.0 is
currently in.

If you want a different configuration, erase USER.CNF, and start
again. If you copy WhizQuiz 6.0 or Quiz to a different drive or
directory, you should also copy USER.CNF.

If you have selected to keep a record, you will now see this
box. If you are starting the program after the first time and
have a USER.CNF already, and have selected to keep a record,
then this will be the first thing you will see. If you have not
chosen to keep a record, you will instead go to the Main Menu.

At this box, the user would enter their Name and press ENTER,
if a roster list is not used, the second line will not be shown,
otherwise they will have to enter the correct ID at this line,
and then enter the name of the Class and press ENTER.

For your convenience, if you have selected to keep a roster, and
you are entering Whizquiz, you may press ENTER when asked for
an ID. This does not work when running Quiz.exe.

Encrypt a text file.. This will convert version 5.5, and quizzes
made with a text editor, to a scrambled file.
Quit the Whizquiz.leaves the program.

ENCRYPTION

ENCRYPT A TEXT FILE

Whizquiz, and Quiz, will run with either encrypted or normal
quiz files.

You may wish to make quizzes unreadable to prevent a student
from just using the DOS command "TYPE filename" and seeing
them.

When writing quizzes using the Build a Quiz option, the quiz
will automatically be written in the encrypted format. If
you are using a version 5.5 quiz, or one written with a text
editor, you may also encrypt them using this option.

If you attempt to encrypt a quiz that is already encrypted,
the program will advise you that it already is encrypted, and
return you to the main menu.

THE RESPONSE FILE

I have included a file called Response. To alter the file
use any text editor that will save in ASCII form (no control
characters from a word processor) and either alter the ones
I have or make a completely new file called RESPONSE.
The first 5 lines are used when the correct answer is given,
the second 5 lines are used when a wrong answer is given.

If you need to alter a quiz made earlier than 5.5, to be used by
WhizQuiz 6.0, notify me and I will supply you with a utility program

TEXT EDITORS EDITORS

A text editor, that will save a file as an ASCII file, can be used to
write or edit the quiz files, if preferred.

Each question is 25 lines long, followed by the next question without
a blank line between them. In this format;

Any ASCII character can be used in any of the lines, except for
the Correct Answer line, which MUST be A, B, C, D, or E. The first
line and the last line for each question must be numbers. The
first line progresses from 1 to the number of questions in the
quiz. The last line is 2, 3, 4, or 5, which is the number of
answers for the question.

Save the file with the extension .QZZ and encrypt it from the
Whizquiz main menu if desired.

VERSION CHANGES CHANGES
Improvements made over Version 5.5:

Encrypted files are made and used by Whizquiz.

You have the option to give students passwords (ID's) in
order to take a quiz.

You may have custom responses to correct or incorrect
answers. Five correct responses and five incorrect responses.

Improvements made over Version 5.0:

When taking a Quiz, you may skip a question by pressing the
ENTER key. When all of the questions have been seen once,
the questions that were passed are shown again. If it has
been configured to do so, the program will then show all of
the missed questions again.

A question can have from 2 to 5 answers, instead of being limited
to 4 answers. In a quiz, one question may have 2 answers and the
next question might have 3, 4, or 5 answers.

When editing a question, retyping an entire line is no longer
necessary. The line is shown and it may be altered using the
INSERT, DELETE, BACKSPACE, HOME and END keys.

SHAREWARE PROGRAMS

This program is not in the public domain, it is being offered on a
Shareware basis. If you receive it from a Disk Copy service, the
money you have paid for this program is to cover the Vendor's
expenses of bringing the program to you for your inspection, be
aware that the author does not receive any fee from the service.

Whizquiz may be distributed to others by any means, as long as
no fee other than a disk copy fee is charged. This manual may not
be altered, nor may the Whizquiz files.

Shareware means that you can try this program without risking any
money. If you use the program after the initial trial period, you
are expected to send a registration fee of $15.00.

Registered users will receive the next update at no charge.

Registered users will be given unlimited assistance if any
problems arise.

Registered users will receive occasional lists of prepared quizzes,
as they become available.

Schools, businesses, and other educators should contact me
about site licenses (if required).

QUIZZES WANTED

If you develop some quizzes that you feel others will find
worthwhile, contact me to place your quizzes in my list.

There is no copyright of the Whizquiz format, so you may
distribute your quizzes in any manner that you wish. If
you offer them on a shareware basis, please note in your
documentation that the registration of your quiz does not
register Whizquiz or Quiz.
