A. Introduction

There are 50 records contained in Version 2.5. Please support and contribute to
shareware programs.

The United States Profile Program is a database that contains 50 records. Each
record provides information about a particular state. You can search on any
data field through the M(ask) sequence.

I developed the program for use on harddisk. It can be used on a floppy after
the program creates the following NTX index files:

ARANK State ranking by square miles
CAPITAL State capitals, alphabetical order
PRANK Ranking by state population
RANK Statehood ranking (entered Union)
STATE Alphabetical listing of states
ABBREV State abbreviation (two characters)

B. Hardware Requirements

The United State Profile Program (USPP) should run on IBM XTs, ATs, PS/2 and
compatibles. This Version 2.5 will operate on a floppy disk due to the limited
database file size and the index file. This program may not operate on a
monochrome system.

C. Operation

The USPP complements source documentation such as almanacs, dictionaries, and
encyclopedias.

To operate USPP type STATES at the DOS prompt. As noted, the program will
generate six NTX files. The "Disclaimer Screen" is the first screen shown.

At the prompt, type 2. The program will go to Screen 2. You may continue the
process by typing 3, 4, and 5. You may search on any data element which appear
on any of the data screens.

Type at the prompt a "?" for the pull down help menu. Disregard the ESC key to
exit the program. Type Q(uit) to exit program and return to DOS.

The Number 8 key, on the numeric pad, will allow you to return to a previous
data element(s).

D. Searches

This program (Version 2.5) has a database of 50 files. You can now conduct a
search on the data field, for example the field "BIRDS." At the prompt type
M(ask). The screen will clear all data information. Tab to the BIRDS data
element touch the "carriage return" or enter key several times. At the data
element type Mockingbird and touch the "page down" key. This procedure will
begin the search process for all inquires.

The first record having the Mockingbird as its official bird is the State of
Arkansas. Type N(ext) at the prompt to view the next four state records with a
Mockingbird as its official state bird. Touch M again to return to the top of
the file and stop the search feature.

At the command prompt (Screen 2) touch F(ind) key. The screen will clear and
display six data elements. The elements highlighted: state name, capital, state
abbreviation, state ranking, population, and area ranking. Anyone of these
elements can be search on. The F(ind) feature is much faster than the M(ask)
feature.

Tab to Area Ranking "carriage return" or Enter key. Type 1 and touch the "page
down" key. The only record containing a number one listing is for the State of
Alaska. Alaska is the largest state. Do you know the 35th state in land area?
Let's do two more F(inds). Type F, tab to State ranking and type 7 and touch
"page down" key. The seventh state to enter the Union was Maryland. Touch the

Page 3

B(ottom) key. The program will go to record 50 (Hawaii). What was the 49th
State to enter the Union? Touch P(revious) and you'll see Alaska was the 49th
State

At the command prompt you may enter P for prior record. This command takes you
back one record ... and N for next record. You may continue the process if you
want to.

Some elements will require caps. State abbreviation is one of the data fields
which require capitalization. You need to see the entire program to understand
its potential to conduct searches.

E. Reports

A report called STATE is one of the files on Version 2.5. To generate a report
touch L for a listing, touch R for reports, and type STATE. Choose P for a
printed report or S for screen. Your search criteria determines the number of
records.

If you want to know how many times the name "Jackson" appears in the first line
of Famous People. Go to Screen 5, touch M(ask) and tab to the famous people.
Type Jackson and touch "page down" key.

The STATE report will list each state meeting the search criteria. Report
STATE2 list state categories such as bird, flower, tree, song, and state's
motto.

In the F(ind) mode, choose the report that corresponds to your selection.
Report called RANKING will list all states in alphabetical order.

Other ranking reports include (1) AREA, (2) POP, and UN-RANK (Union ranking).
Also, a report called CAPITAL will list in alphabetical order all state
capitals. However, you must first Find the state capital beginning with the
letter A, and then choose the report CAPITAL.

There is a report called CITIES. This report will list all cities (either M for
a specific element or Find for all states).

Please let me know what reports you would like to see. Try using the STATE and
STATE2, and CITIES reports while the program is in alphabetical order by state
name.

F. Editing

You can edit any data element shown on the screen. Just type E at the command
prompt. You can correct any misspelled description. To exit edit mode you must
"page down" to Screen 5.

G. Other Features

Other features are T(op) or B(ottom) of the file. While searching in M(ask)
mode you can go to the top or bottom of a file. When you first start the

Page 4

program you are at the top of the file. You can C(ount) for a specific data
element having a given content. You can count the number of Mockingbirds listed
as state birds. A number will flash in the upper-right-hand corner of the
screen. Watch carefully, you may miss it.

H. Help

There is a help menu. At the command prompt enter the question mark symbol.
You will see a pull down menu of all features. Please disregard the ESC key to
exit the program and return to DOS. To exit, just enter Q at the command
prompt. You have available to you all features shown. Try them all!

Let me know how you like Version 2.5. Remember to register and send your check
for $2 (cheap, but it's a good product for the price).

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
