Atkinson & Atkinson, USING C, Que Corp., 1990, ISBN 0-88022-571-8, $29.95.
For the intermediate to advanced C programmer, a very useful text and
reference to the language. Many good example programs. Explanations
very lucid. Includes brief intro to C++. Generic ANSI C, but most
examples in Turbo C.

Brodie, Leo: STARTING FORTH, Prentice-Hall, 1981, ISBN 0-13-842922-7.
An excellent way to learn FORTH. The book is easy to understand,
interesting, and amusing.

Kidder, Tracy: THE SOUL OF A NEW MACHINE, Avon Books, 1982,
ISBN 0-380-59931-7, $3.95.
The retelling of how a group of young programmers and engineers working
against time and the odds created an advanced minicomputer at DEC. A
gripping and enjoyable story that gives an insider's view of the
industry.

Kitsz, Dennis Bathory: THE CUSTOM TRS-80 & OTHER MYSTERIES, IJG Inc., 1982,
ISBN 0-936200-02-2 [out of print].
A out-of-print love poem to an out-of-production computer. Surprisingly

complete collection of articles, essays, data sheets, and schematics
covering hardware and software modification to the "classic" Model I
TRS-80. Not of much practical use any more (unless you can get a hold of
a still commonly available used "Trash 80" at a flea market), but still
wonderfully educational and enjoyable to browse and read.

Lafore, Robert: OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING IN TURBO C++, Waite Group Press,
1991, ISBN 1-878739-06-02, $26.95.
An easy introductory level primer for the would-be C++ programmer. The
author claims that no previous knowledge of C is necessary. Not quite
the case, but almost. Very well written and mostly free of jargon.
For those wanting to learn C++, this is the first book to get.
Excellent++.

Levy, David: HACKERS, HEROES OF THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION, Anchor/Doubleday,
1984, ISBN 0-385-19195-2, $17.95.
Entertaining and educational description of the Hacker subculture and
its roots in the early days of microcomputer development.

Mayer, Herbert G.: ADVANCED C PROGRAMMING ON THE IBM PC, Windcrest Books,
1989, ISBN 0-8306-9363-7, $26.95.
An idea-filled book for the intermediate to advanced programmer. Superb
coverage of algorithms, quirks of the language, and even amusements.
Very readable and enjoyable for the author's dry sense of humor, if
nothing else. Very highly recommended.

Norton, Peter: THE PETER NORTON PROGRAMMER'S GUIDE TO THE IBM PC, Microsoft
Press, 1985, ISBN 0-914845-46-2, $19.95.
The indispensable reference for interrupts, memory map, etc.

Osborne, Adam: AN INTRODUCTION TO MICROCOMPUTERS - VOL. II, SOME REAL
PRODUCTS, Osborne & Associates Inc., LC# 76-374891, 1977 [out of print].
One of the first references to CPU's and support chips, it is still
a very useful guide for data and applications involving CPU logic.

Schild, Herb: BORN TO CODE IN C, Osborn McGraw Hill, 1989,
ISBN 0-07-881468-5, $28.95.
Profiles of veteran C programmers and annotated source code of
programming projects make this an enlightening and readable
addition to anyone's programming library.

Stoll, Cliff: THE CUCKOO'S EGG, Pocket Books, 1990, ISBN 0-671-72688-9,
$5.95.
A computer systems manager on the convoluted trail of a hacker. Very
educational and enjoyable reading.

Waite, Mitchell, Stephen Prata, and Donald Martin, C PRIMER PLUS, Waite Group
Press, ISBN 0-672-22090-3, $22.95.
Probably the best of the introductions to C. Extensive coverage for
a primer. New edition now available.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
