GENE MASTER
Version 2.1a

PRINCE WILLIAM CUSTOM COMPUTERS
This is the second public release of GENE MASTER. GENE MASTER is
delivered under a concept we call TRI-WARE. We call it TRI-WARE
rather than SHAREWARE because it is offered in three forms:
1) Feel free to use and copy these files as long as you make no
commercial use of them. This option will cost you nothing and
we provide only the software and partial documentation.
2) If you desire a printed manual, support, low cost updates, and
input on the future of GENE MASTER, please register.
This option costs $59.00. This will provide you with a printed
manual, phone support, low cost major version updates for 1
year, no cost minor updates for 1 year, and our promise to
consider all suggestions for the future of GENE MASTER.
GENE MASTER has taken more than four years to develop (so far).
We originally intended to offer it on a commercial basis only.
We recently decided to give the "SHAREWARE" concept a try. This
keeps both our customer's and our costs down. If ample
registrations continue to be received, we will be happy to
continue this option. If enough registrations are not received,
those who do register will be considered commercial purchasers
and we will begin offering GENE MASTER on a commerical basis
only. This insures that those who register will not get
involved with yet another unsupported product.
3) If you also desire the database engine used to write
GENE MASTER, purchase the commercial developers release. With
the commercial developers release, you can easily develop
programs that work with the GENE MASTER database directly.
This option costs $99.00. This will provide all of option 2
plus the TURBO PASCAL TPU file which contains the database
engine developed especially for GENE MASTER. Additional
documentation and sample programs are included with this option.
Those who register under option 2 can later upgrade to option 3
for $40.00.

Installation of this version...
For this version of GENE MASTER, ignore the installation instructions
in the GM.DOC file.
GENE MASTER should be installed in a separate directory (C:\GM is
presumed). Create the desired directory and copy the files on this
disk to that directory using the commands:
C:
MD \GM
CD \GM
COPY A:*.* if the GENE MASTER disk is in A:
or
COPY B:*.* if the GENE MASTER disk is in B:
or
PKUNZIP path\GM_21A if you download GM_21A.ZIP from a BBS, path is
the path you downloaded GM_21A.ZIP into.
If you are using an earlier release of GENE MASTER, the installation
is now complete, just give the normal GM command!
If you do not currently use a program that can generate GEDCOM (GED)
files, give the command: GM. You will be asked several questions.
These are:
Config file missing - create [Y]? (press enter)
Family name: (enter 1 to 8 characters, then press enter. Option
2 & 3 purchasers will be able to maintain multiple

for this fileset will be kept)
Fileset does not exist, create [Y]?: (press enter)
GENE MASTER is now ready to use.

If you currently use a program that can generate a GED file, follow
these steps:

Give the command: CD \GM
Give the command: GED2GID GEDfile GIDfile. Where GEDfile is the
name of the GED file you created using your software package and
GIDfile is the name of the new GID file to create. This will
create a GID file from your GED file. GEDfile and/or GIDfile can
be complete pathnames.
Give the command: GM. You will be asked several questions. These
are:
Config file missing - create [Y]? (press enter)
Family name: (enter 1 to 8 characters, then press enter.
Option 2 & 3 purchasers will be able to maintain
multiple filesets)

followed by a single I)
In GENE MASTER's FILE menu, Import GID will be highlighted and a
question will popup which asks:
Input File: (Give the name of the GID file you created using
