The Shareware Concept

Family Scrapbook is Shareware. Shareware basically means "Try
before you buy." If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you must compensate the author by purchasing it.
(purchasing a shareware product is usually called "registering")

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software.
Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality.
(In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main
difference is in the method of distribution.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the
ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you
don't pay for it.

Family Scrapbook costs $50 US. You are encouraged to compare its
abilities with other genealogy programs...including the "shelfware"
or "buy it, then try it" ones. Family Scrapbook is tough to beat!

Distribution

This program was originally distributed on BBS's as three
compressed files. The file extension may vary due to the many
different file compression programs that are in use.

Documentation

The manual is contained in FSB.DOC, which will be uncompressed
during the installation procedure. A printed manual is mailed to
those who register the program.

Recommended Hardware

* 640 kilobytes of base ram
* hard drive
* color monitor
* A IBM, Epson, or HP compatible printer
* DOS version 3.3 or higher

Installation Instructions

You need about 2.5MB of free disk space. The program will need
more disk space as you add data.

Uncompress all files onto floppy disks or a temporary subdir and
run the INSTALL program on disk 1. INSTALL will do the following:

1. Make a subdirectory on your hard disk
2. Install the files into it.
3. If you are upgrading from a previous version, it will
convert your old data to the new format. Make sure
you know what your old version is before starting.
MAKE A BACKUP before upgrading! ...Just in case!

Example: 1. Put disk 1 in drive A:
2. Type A: and then press ENTER
3. Type INSTALL and then press ENTER
4. It will tell you what to do next...

After installation, to start the program, run: FSB.EXE
