Technical Notes

The following discussion was developed after the basic design of the
flag program had been completed; the program does not make use of the
information; data for EGA and VGA proportions have not been developed.

The IBM screen proportions in basic (Medium res graphics, screen 1)
require that the following ratios be used instead of the absolute
ratios indicated. Unfortunately, the tuning of the particular monitor has a
greater effect on the proportions (and colors too, for that matter!) then
any mathematical rigor in the design. (And note that printed graphics have
yet another ratio).

Eight X (Horizontal) increments in the 320 x 200 mode are equivalent to only
seven Y (Vertical) increments. Therefore a 1:2 (vertical to horizontal)
proportion has to be entered as 7:16 (or multiples thereof). A one-to-one
(square) flag, such as Switzerland or Vatican City, would actually be coded as
a 8:7 ratio. FOR EXAMPLE, Switzerland could be entered as:

LINE (81,11)-(240,150),2,BF (The Horizonatl is 160 long, the
vertical is 140. This will appear square on the IBM color graphic display)

Another Example: A 2:3 ratio flag (2 units on the hoist {vertical}, 3 units
on the fly {horizontal}) could be entered as any 7:12 ratio e.g.,
140 x 240 ( = 20x7 x 20x12)

LINE (41,5)-(280,144),2,bf -- 240 horiz. x 140 vert.

To convert from the ratios as given, multiply the hoist number by 7, the fly
number by 8. Some examples are given for the most common ratios. Note that
in practice, these have to be modified somewhat to allow, for example, for
even divisions of stripes or bars, etc.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
