On-Disk Evaluation Tutorial

NOTE: You don't need to read this if you received a printed copy of the eval-
uation tutorial.

This is a condensed version of the tutorial chapter from the CFI Operating
Manual. You may read it front-to-back as a complete check-out of CFI, or you
may skip around if you just need a little "dual" on a particular feature.

To start CFI, turn on your computer and get an A> prompt on your screen.
Insert your CFI Evaluation disk in Drive A. Then type CFIP (for the Private
version) or CFII (for the Instrument version) and press ENTER. (More detailed
information about installing and running CFI is included in the Operating
Manual.)

Title Screen

CFI first displays a title screen, and then checks its data files. When you
see the message "Press any key to continue" near the bottom of the screen,
just press any key to go on.

CFI now displays an evaluation screen with ordering information. After
reading this screen, press a key to go on.

Main Menu

Now you're at the Main Menu. The selection bar is on LEARN. Beneath is an
explanation line which tells you that LEARN stands for "Learn all questions
and answers by subject."

Use the arrow keys to move the bar from choice to choice. (Do not press ENTER
yet). As you move the bar, an explanation of each selection appears. The
other selections are:

TEST Take a sample FAA written test.
OPTIONS View or change program options.
QUIT Quit CFI.

NOTE: Any time CFI says "Use arrow keys..." to select something, you may also
use PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, HOME, and END to move the selection bar more quickly
to the top, bottom, or sides of the menus.

NOTE: If your keyboard has no separate arrow keys (that is, your arrow keys
only appear on the numeric keypad), you must make sure that NUM LOCK is off
before using the arrow keys. See your computer manual if you need more help.

NOTE: When at the Main Menu and all similar menus, you may also press the
first letter of your choice instead of moving the selection bar. When you
select a choice this way, CFI will not wait for you to press ENTER.

Now, either move the selection bar back to LEARN and press ENTER, or just
press L.

LEARN Mode

The Learn by Subject menu appears. This is a list of all the subjects in CFI.
Note that the last "subject" is RETURN TO MAIN MENU, in case you'd like to
return without selecting a subject.

NOTE: These subjects are logical groupings of the questions, and don't neces-
sarily coincide with the FAA's "knowledge areas."

Selecting a Subject

Use the arrow keys (and PAGE DOWN, etc.) to select any subject, then press
ENTER.

CFI loads the questions from its data files, shuffles them, and then displays
the first one on the screen.

At the top are the subject name, the FAA question number, the number of ques-
tions remaining to be answered, and the total number of questions on this
subject. (For now, these last two are the same.)

Answering a Question

NOTE: If the question refers to a figure or note, look it up in FAA-T-8080-1B,
Private Pilot Question Book, or FAA-T-8080-7B, Instrument Rating Question
Book. The page and figure numbers in CFI match those in the FAA books.

The four possible answers appear beneath, with the selection bar on answer 1.

Use the arrow keys (etc.) to move the selection bar from answer to answer.
Don't press ENTER yet. You you may also just press a number key to make your
choice. If you do, CFI will not wait for you to press ENTER.

NOTE: Please note whether NUM LOCK is on or not. An example: If you press an
arrow key on the keypad with NUM LOCK on, CFI will see a number, and the
result will probably not be what you intended.

Now, either move the selection bar back to your choice and press ENTER, or
just press the number key of your choice.

The correct answer appears in high intensity or blinking characters. If you
selected the correct answer, the selection bar disappears. If your answer
was wrong, the selection bar remains so that you may see both your answer and
the correct answer at the same time.

The top line information is updated to include the number of questions you've
missed, if any. Below the question box, a result message and study reference
appear. And finally, a selection menu appears at the bottom of the screen.

Selection Menu

From this menu, you may:

CONTINUE Continue with the next question on this
subject.
BEGIN Begin all the questions on this subject again.
SELECT Select a new subject.
MENU Return to the Main Menu.

Select CONTINUE to see the next question. Answer several questions and note
how the top line information is updated after each one.

Now select BEGIN. The questions in this subject are re-shuffled and then
presented again, including the ones you've already answered correctly.

If you choose SELECT (don't do it now), you'll return to the Learn by Subject
menu where you may choose a new subject.

NOTE: To see all the features of the Learn mode, you must answer all the ques-
tions on a subject, and then repeat the ones you missed, until you don't miss
any. If you don't want to take the time to do all that right now, just read
over the next three sections without doing them.

NOTE: If you start these sections and then decide to move on without
finishing, just choose MENU from any selection menu and then skip ahead to
the "TEST Mode" section.

All Questions Answered

Continue answering questions until you've finished all the questions on the
subject. A slightly different menu appears. The first selection is now

REPEAT Repeat the questions you missed.

Select REPEAT, and CFI will re-shuffle just the questions you missed and start
displaying them again.

All Questions Answered Correctly

Continue answering questions until you've finished them again. Then select
REPEAT, answer questions, select REPEAT, etc., until you have no missed ques-
tions. You've now completed an entire study cycle for one subject.

Your Study Progress

Each time you complete a study cycle, CFI makes note of it. The next time you
see the Learn by Subject menu, you'll see a checkmark, or an additional check-
mark, by that subject.

These marks will accumulate up to 20 marks per subject, and are saved from
session to session to indicate your study progress. You may erase them and
start over any time you want. See "Setting Your Program Options."

When you're through looking at the Learn mode, choose MENU from any selection
menu to return to the Main Menu.

TEST Mode

Select TEST from the Main Menu, and CFI creates a sample test for you.

Your sample test resembles an FAA written test, but does not duplicate any
actual test. In fact, CFI generates a one-of-a-kind test every time, while
the FAA reportedly uses only eight different written tests at any given
moment.

When your test is ready, CFI displays the first question on the screen. The
question number, the FAA question number, and the time remaining appear at the
top of the screen.

NOTE: The time remaining, to the nearest minute, is shown for your information
only. That is, CFI will allow you to exceed the FAA time limit for the test.
This would mean, of course, that you're not ready to take your actual test.

The question and answers appear much the same as they did in the Learn mode,
except that the selection bar is now located on "0 - (Not answered)."

To answer the question, move the selection bar to your choice and press ENTER,
or press the number key of your choice.

NOTE: Please note whether NUM LOCK is on or not. An example: If you press an
arrow key on the keypad with NUM LOCK on, CFI will see a number, and the
result will probably not be what you intended.

To skip the question for now, just select "0 - (Not answered)."

NOTE: Later, if you are "passing through" a question you've already answered
and don't wish to change your answer, just press ENTER. You may return to any
question as often as you like before you finish the test.

When you select an answer, or just press ENTER, another menu appears. Your
choices are:

NEXT Continue with the next question.
PREVIOUS Go back to the previous question.
ANSWRSHEET Display your answer sheet.
FINISHED Finished with test, compute score.

Select NEXT, and the next question is displayed. Answer the question or just
press ENTER to get the selection menu back.

Now select PREVIOUS. CFI takes you to the question preceding the one you just
finished.

NOTE: CFI will "stick" on PREVIOUS. You may, for example, go back three more
questions just by repeatedly pressing ENTER.

NOTE: If you choose PREVIOUS from question 1, you'll "wrap" back around to
question 50. In the same manner, if you choose NEXT from question 50, you'll
go back to question 1.

Answer Sheet

Select ANSWRSHEET. CFI shows your answers, the number of unanswered questions
remaining, and the time remaining. Each unanswered question appears with a
blank beside the number, so that you may quickly see which questions you've
skipped.

The selection bar is on the question number that you just finished. You may
move the selection bar to any question, and CFI will display that question
after you press ENTER.

NOTE: You may view your Answer Sheet as often as you like, and you may return
to any question and change any answer as many times as you like.

Now move the selection bar to any question and press ENTER.

CFI displays the question you selected. Answer the question or just press
ENTER to get the selection menu.

Finishing the Test

Select FINISHED. CFI displays the time remaining and the number of unanswered
questions, if any; and asks you to confirm your selection by pressing Y or N.

Pressing N returns you to the test through the Answer Sheet.

NOTE: Make sure you are really finished before pressing Y, because once you
do, you may not return to this particular sample test.

Press Y to end the test.

Scorecard

CFI computes your test score and displays the first part of your scorecard.
The date appears in the upper-right corner, if your computer has a clock-
calendar or you entered the date manually when you started your system.

Next appears the number of questions you answered, the number you got right,
the time you took to take the test, your overall score, and your score on each
subject. The subject scores are also in percent, even though the percent sign
is omitted.

If you missed any questions, CFI asks you to press a key to continue.

Go ahead and press a key. CFI displays the incorrect questions on the second
page of the scorecard.

This page shows the FAA Question number, the correct answer, your answer, and
the study reference for each question you missed, up to 13 questions.

If you missed more than 13 questions, then each time you press a key CFI dis-
plays the next 13 missed questions, until you have seen them all.

Keep pressing keys until you see the selection menu.

Your choices are:

DISPLAY Display this scorecard on-screen again.
WRITE Write this scorecard on your printer.
MENU Return to the Main Menu.

Select DISPLAY, and you will see all the pages of your scorecard again. You
may review your scorecard on-screen as many times as you like.

If you have a printer connected, select WRITE, and CFI will print out a copy
of your scorecard. You can use the printed scorecard to monitor your prog-
ress, and especially to keep track of your weak areas.

Finally, select the ubiquitous MENU and return to the Main Menu.

Setting Your Program Options

Select OPTIONS from the Main Menu, and CFI displays a Program Options screen.
Move the selection bar to the option "Correct answers...." Press the SPACE
BAR, and the option changes between "HIGH INTENSITY characters" and "BLINKING
characters." (It could be on either one when you start.) The choices will
toggle back and forth each time you press the SPACE BAR.

If you like, move the selection bar to the other options, and use the SPACE
BAR to see what choices are available.

NOTE: All the options are explained in detail in the CFI Operating Manual.

Quitting CFI

Select QUIT, and CFI updates your study progress. Then when asked, just press
a key to return to the DOS prompt, after another quick look at the Evaluation
screen.

Post-Flight

That's about it. In this tutorial you've seen all the features of CFI. The
Operating Manual (shipped with CFI) contains more detailed information about
installation, options, etc., along with a guide to reference publications, and
a listing of the correct answers and references for each test.

We think you'll agree that CFI will quickly prepare you to ace that written
test! To purchase CFI, use the included order form, or print out the file,
ORDER.FRM, on the evaluation disk.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
