TCAP Version 1.0 2
What Is TCAP
TCAP is a terminate and stay resident (TSR) program for capturing 'Text
Screens' on IBM PCs and compatibles. Screens from text based applications
(spreadsheets, word processing, and other programs) can be captured and later be
sent to McLain Imaging for conversion into SHARP, high resolution 35mm slides.
With the utility SHOW.EXE (provided) you may also view and print your screens.
It is also possible to convert captured files into text or binary files for use
in other programs.
The TCAP TSR program can:
o Capture screens from most text based applications running on an IBM
PC/XT/AT or compatible computer.
o Recognize and capture 80 x 25, 80 x 43 and 80 x 50 line screens.
o Capture both Color or Monochrome screens.
o Be activated by the Print-Screen key or one other designated hot key.
The Print-Screen key can optionally be disabled for use by TCAP,
allowing it to function as before TCAP was loaded.
The TCAP program SHOW.EXE can:
o Display your captured screens for reference.
o Print your captured screens files.
o Copy captured screens to the standard output.
o Translate captures screens into a standard binary screen file.

TCAP Version 1.0 6
Using TCAP
Installing TCAP
TCAP should be installed in its own directory:
Example: C:\TCAP.
Starting TCAP
Starting TCAP is simple; type 'TCAP' at the DOS prompt. Note: you must
be in the directory in which TCAP is located or that directory must be
in the DOS path.
C>tcap
Once loaded into memory the program will remain until you remove it or
your computer is restarted. Once called the program will sign on with
the following message:
TCAP version 1.0
TCAP Control Program Version 1.0
McLain Imaging Services (714) 642-5219
Copr. 1989 by J.P.McLain
File path: C:\TCAP\CAPS
Hot Key: Alt-Ins
Taking a 'snapshot' of the text screen
TCAP 1.0x will attempt to capture a text screen when either of two
predefined keys is pressed:
o The Print-Screen Key
Note: the Print-Screen key can be disabled with the
/d command to return it to its normal function.
o TCAP's designated 'Hot Key'
Note: the Hot Key can be changed with the /k
command. The default Hot Key is Alt-Ins (hold down
the ALT key then press the INS (insert) key on the
keypad).
Captured Screen Files
TCAP defaults to storing captured files using the name CAPS with an
extension that signifies the capture sequence order. The first file
captured will have the name 'CAPS.000", the second file would be
'CAPS.001' and so on. In this release of TCAP only the directory and
base name (ie. CAPS) can be changed.
TCAP Options
Certain aspects of TCAP's behavior are modifiable at the time the
program is run or at a later time from the DOS prompt. In this version
(1.0x) the following items may be changed:
TCAP Version 1.0 7
o The designated 'Hot Key'.
o The Print-Screen Key can be returned to its normal function
and TCAP will not use it as a signal to capture the screen.
o TCAP can be removed from memory.
o The user can name the directory in which captured files will
be stored as well change the file's base name.
TCAP Version 1.0 8
TCAP Commands
Usage: tcap [ options ]
/f Change the path and filename for a capture files.
example: '/f c:\capfiles\mycaps'
/k Change the hot key that activates TCAP.
example: '/k alt-esc' or '/k LShift-a'
/d Disable TCAP's processing of print-screen key.
example: '/d'
/u Unload: remove TCAP from memory
example: '/u'
Changing the file name (/f)
TCAP defaults to saving its screen capture files in the directory that
was current when TCAP was started. The capture files will be stored
under the name 'caps.nnn' where 'nnn' represents the capture sequence
order. Both the directory and the base file name may be changed.
Example: change the base file name
c>tcap /f mycap
Example: change the storage directory
c>tcap /f c:\screens
Example: change both the directory and name
c>tcap /f c:\screens\mycap
Changing the Hot Key (/k)
TCAP allows you to select an alternate key sequence to capture screens
in addition to the Print Screen key option. The default key sequence is
'Alt-Ins' (press the Insert key while holding down either the left or
right Alt key).
To change the Hot Key, you must tell TCAP which 'shift states' (if any)
are required and what key to watch for. To specify the shift state
(which special keys on the keyboard are pressed) select from the
following identifiers:
LShift-, RShift-, Alt- or Control-
You must include the '-' before specifying the key which TCAP should
watch for.
Example: 'LShift-a'
Note: the case of the letter is not important.
Special keys are selected by using their name. We have provided a list
of special keys at the end of this manual.
Disable Print-Screen Key Option (/d)
This command returns the Print Screen key to its normal function. TCAP
will then only capture a screen when its Hot Key combination is pressed.
Command:
TCAP Version 1.0 9
C>TCAP /D
Remove TCAP from memory (/u)
When you are done using TCAP, the program may be unloaded to free up
memory for other uses. Command:
C>TCAP /U
TCAP will then be released as soon as possible. If another program was
loaded after TCAP it will not be possible to release TCAP immediately.
TCAP will be released as soon as any programs or TSR's loaded above it
have been removed.
TCAP Version 1.0 10
SHOW Commands
SHOW - TCAP Captured Text Screen
Copr. 1988, 1989 by J.P.McLain
usage: show [ flags ] filename
/b Write 'generic' binary file.
/p Copy text to PRN:
/s Copies text to standard output.
/l Converts low ascii values (1..31) to spaces
when copying to standard output.
Displaying the captured file
SHOW is designed to display previous captured text screens. To see the
screen, just type the name of the screen file after the program name.
Command:
C>SHOW CAPS.000
SHOW can also display binary screen files as saved by SHOW or from other
sources.
C>SHOW MYSCREEN.BIN
Creating a binary file for use with other programs
A binary screen file is a file that contains the all of the information
stored in the screen buffer and _only_ that information. SHOW can create
binary files that are displayable by SHOW and usable by other programs. To
create a binary file use the command:
C>SHOW /b CAPS.001
This will create a file by the name CAPS.BIN.
Printing a captured file
SHOW can print captured files. The Command:
C>SHOW /p CAPS.002
Will print the file 'CAPS.002' by copying it to the DOS printer device PRN.
Creating text files
You can create text files from your captured screens. To do this we will
redirect the output of SHOW using DOS redirection ('>'). The Command:
C>SHOW /s CAPS.003 >myfile.txt
Creates the file 'myfile.txt'
TCAP Version 1.0 11
Hot Keys
Refer to the following list of names for specifying a function or
special key on your keyboard.
Shift Keys:
LShift-, RShift-, Alt- and Control-
The '-' at the end of key name is required. You may 'combine' several
of these keys together to create your hot key. Example: 'LShift-Alt-Z'
will cause your hot key to require the simultaneous pressing of the Left
Shift Key + either one of the Alt keys + the 'Z' key.
Function Keys:
F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12
F11 and F12 on enhanced keyboards only.
KeyPad Keys:
Num, Scroll, Home, Up (arrow), PgUp, Grey-, Left (arrow), Center ('5'
key), Right (arrow), Grey+, End, Down (arrow), PgDn, Ins, Del, Grey*
Other Keys:
'Space Bar', Escape, Caps
Notes:
Not all key combinations will work on all keyboards.
TCAP Version 1.0 12
Scheduled Enhancements
The following enhancements have been requested by our customers and will
be included in version 1.1.
o VGA color palette control.
o Automated (timed) screen capture.
o Trigger screen capture from external programs.
Known Limitations, Problems and Incompatibilities
o TCAP may be incompatible with 4DOS while at the 4DOS prompt.
Some users have noted that when rapidly trying to capture
screen using ALT-Key or Control-Key combinations the keyboard
will lock up, requiring the user to reboot the computer.
The Print Screen key appears to work without problem at the D O S
prompt, and capturing from applications programs is not
affected.
o TCAP maps all colors to the 16 default colors on the
CGA/EGA/VGA color palette. Any custom palette changes on
EGA/VGA adapters are not recognized and therefore not saved to
the capture file.
In a later version TCAP will be able to recognize custom
palette configurations.
o Running TCAP under DESQview is only possible in a window and
will only be able to capture screens in the session in which
it is loaded. You can't capture a screen while in a different
window.
o When using SHOW to create a binary file, the file created is named by
using the base name ('caps' from 'caps.001) and appending the file
extension '.BIN'. This creates a problem when you wish to create more
than one 'bin' file where there are multiple capture files with the
same base name: each successive conversion will over write the
previous one. The current solution is to rename the files before
conversion.
This will be corrected in a later version.

Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
