Hello!!

Welcome to SchematicMaster. This program is the result
of hundreds of hours of work. It was written specifically to
handle documentation and to clear up a whole file cabinet of
napkins and old envelopes with scribbled schematics on them.
This is sort of a early beta version on which we would
like to get comments and suggestions before finalizing version
2.0. I have found it very useful but it does have some problems.
It is written entirely in assembly language for speed and versitility.
If you would like to receive a larger IC library and a printed
manual and reduced price on version 2.0 just send us $15.00 and
we'll send a new disk right out.

For a good set of comments you might get it for nothing.

There is space for 1000 ICs in the main library. Only
the most popular of the 4000 series are included in this
program. A large library of over 200 ICs including the most
popular of the 74 and linear series will be sent to you after
you send us the $15 fee to register your ownership. Other
libraries will become available and specialized libraries may
be custom-ordered.

FOR THE RECORD:
This program is being distributed as shareware and the
usual rules apply. You can make as many copies as you like for
friends etc. as long as they are complete and unmodified and
you do not charge for them. Public Domaine distributors should
contact us for authorization.

Please make checks payable to:

General Hints For
Schematic Drawing 10

INTRODUCTION

SchematicMaster is a CAD schematic drafting program. It
is the ideal way to turn jotted notes into a professionally
finished drawing with a minimum amount of time and effort.

It is assumed that the user will have general computer
literacy though all instructions are complete and
comprehensive.

SchematicMaster is designed to run on IBM PC or
compatible with 256K memory and MSDOS 2.1 or higher. It
requires color graphics capabilities and is compatible with
standard graphics printers.

Standard size sheet on which schematics are drawn is 2x3
screens. This allows 3 schematics to be stored on a standard
diskette.

Most commands are are single key or menu driven. This
allows immediate use without learning a new instruction set.

The Integrated Circuit Library contains most 4 to 40 pin
ICs in current use. There is additional space for 32 user-
defined ICs.

Program is usable with single disk drive but dual disk
drive will be much more convenient. Prompts will vary due to
number of drives in system.

INSTRUCTIONS

All files on disk other than template files are an integral
part of program.
DO NOT ERASE OR RENAME!!

BACK-UP COPY

A back-up copy is advised and can be made using standard
DOS diskcopy function.

PREPARING PROGRAM DISK

With DOS booted and DOS disk in drive, type:
SYS B:

Following prompts, put Schematic program disk in drive,
Enter. Continue following prompts.

After system has been installed, copy your DOS COMMAND.C OM onto SchematicMaster disk.

When completed, it would be advisable to place write-
protect tabs on the original disk and the backup copy. Then
make a working copy (with system files).

Use Control/Alt/Delete to reboot program disk.

KEY TEMPLATES

Included are function key templates for IBM 83-key
keyboard and the Keytronics deluxe extended keyboard. They
can be cut out and taped onto the appropriate keyboard.

Page 2

FILE NAMES

Use drive specifier for document disk when asked for
filename. All DOS file naming conventions apply. (e.g.
[D][PATH] FILENAME [.EXT]

DOCUMENT DISK

The schematics you draw will be stored on the Document
Disk. To create the Document Disk, format a blank disk
without specifying system files (do not use /S). Up to 3

standard schematics can be stored on a Document Disk.

START UP

To begin operations, Type:

SCHEM

Prompts will appear appropriate to the number of disk
drives. In a multi-drive system it will be assumed that after
the document disk is installed it will remain in the same
drive.

The program is divided into three catagories:

1. Drawing and Documentation

2. Component Placement and Editing

3. IC Placement and Editing

SAVE

It is possible to save at any time while in DRAW mode by
pressing F5.

DRAWING MODE

When white screen appears it shows the upper left hand
corner of drawing sheet.
________________
| XX | | |
|----|----|----|
|____|____|____|

To scroll up, down or across the sheet use Alt with
cursor keys. Home brings screen to upper left corner of
sheet. End moves screen to lower right corner of sheet.

CURSORS

The red ERASE cursor (F3) will be in the center of the
screen.

This can be changed to the black DRAW cursor by using
F2.

F1 will get the blue MOVE cursor.

All cursors are moved with the standard cursor keys
(with NUM Lock off).

A few minutes of experimentation will familiarize you
with these functions. Notice that the cursor moves quite

quickly and that it may be difficult to line it up with a
previously drawn line or a specific point.

Page 4
* * * * * * * * * * * * *

F4 will get a slow moving, expanded, blinking cross-hair
cursor which will make horizontal and vertical alignment
quite simple. F4 is an on/off toggle function.

CONNECT

The convention of placing a dot at point where 2 wires
connect is supported by moving the cursor to intersection and
pressing F9.

LABELS AND CHARACTERS

While in MOVE mode all standard characters can be typed
and will appear directly to the left of the cursor. This
allows labelling of components and values. Shifted
characters are overlined to give the "Not" function.

CLEAR SHEET

If you are unhappy with the format you are using and
wish to start over, retaining the same document name and
specs, use Alt F1 to Clear Sheet. This clears the entire 6
screen sheet.

BE CAREFUL!! There is NO reuse buffer!

BLOCK ERASE

The Block Erase Function can be used to erase large
areas of schematic but it can only be used on the visible
screen. By using the Block Erase you will rarely need to
Clear Sheet.

Page 5

BLOCK ERASE (cont.)

If you should make an error in placing a component and
wish to erase it, move the cursor to one corner of an
imaginary rectangle around the component you wish to erase.
Press Alt F3 to mark the corner with a red dot. Then move the
cursor to the diagonal corner of the area you wish to erase.
Mark this corner with Alt F3. A red box will be drawn around
the area and you will be asked if this is what you wish to
erase. Press yes to erase everything within the box.

COMPONENT UTILITIES

When a component (e.g. diode, resistor, transistor etc)
is required, use F7. Menu will pull down from top of screen.

While in component utilities, ESC will return to top
level menu, ESC again will return to DRAWING mode.

To make use of a predefined component from library -
press 1 (Get A Component.) When asked for name of component
refer to list supplied for name. To show list of component
names currently stored, press 4.

The component can be rotated to all four orientations
using the space bar. The component will then be shown and
can be moved with cursor keys to desired location. The
backspace key will give a mirror image of the component. When
component is properly placed (be sure of this) hit Enter to
release cursor and lock component in place.

Page 6
* * * * * * * * * * * * *

MAKE A COMPONENT

If the component you desire is not on the list, press 3
(Make A Component).

You will be asked name of the component (up to 8
characters). Component grid will appear. Proceed to draw
character using cursor keys to move cursor and space bar to
toggle pixels in component on and off.

The component is drawn white on black. To right of
grid, component will be shown in actual schematic size.

If you wish to change design or name of any component an
edit feature is supported.

IC UTILITIES

IC Utilities are accessed by Alt-F7 (as opposed to F7
for Components). Menu appears at top of screen and is self-
explanatory.

If IC requested is not in library you can easily add the
one you need by following instructions on menu. This is
similar to adding a component.

Should you need to add more than 32 extra ICs to
library, it will be necessary to use the back-up copy to
create a new working copy with empty add-on library. Keep a
record of which ICs you add to which working copy to aid in
selecting working disk to be used.

PRINT

To print at any time during Draw Mode press Alt F2.
This will print the entire 6 screen sheet sideways on the
paper. The entire schematic will fit on a legal size sheet (8
1/2 x 14). To use a standard sheet (8 1/2 x 11) do not draw
on far right hand 1/6 of sheet (1/2 of far right hand screens
both top and bottom).

MOUSE INSTRUCTIONS

It is possible to use a mouse with SchematicMaster.
Generally use of the cursor keys will be found to be easier
and more precise but for some applications use of the mouse
may be preferred.

To make use of the mouse, the Mouse Device Driver must
be copied onto the SchematicMaster disk. DEVICE = MOUSE.SYS
must be included in the CONFIG.SYS file. Please check your
mouse handbook for further information.

In operation the cursor will follow the movement of the
mouse. The left-hand button will cycle through the cursors as
follows: DRAW, MOVE, ERASE, MOVE, DRAW, etc. The right-hand
button will slow the cursor and display the crosshairs while
it is held down.

GENERAL HINTS FOR DRAWING SCHEMATICS

Schematics are generally drawn with inputs predominantly
on the lefthand side and outputs on the righthand side.

Positive supply voltage bussing is usually not shown
except for very close connections. It is completed with an
arrow pointing upwards with voltage value at the top.

Ground connections are generally shown by a triangle
pointing downwards. If there is more than one kind of ground
(e.g. logic, power, analog) this is specified by using a
letter inside the triangle.

IC type numbers are usually not shown at the IC. Instead
the ICs are assigned a letter and sequential number, such as
A1, A2, A3, etc. A chart relating assigned number to type
number is placed in the lower right hand corner of the sheet.

The lower right hand corner of the sheet is used for
general notes and also for assigning a standard value to
components (e.g. Unless otherwise speci-fied, all resistor
values are 1/4 watt.).

Readability and ease of drafting can be greatly improved
by carefully consider-ing placement of ICs before beginning
especially on complicated schematics.

ICs should be placed before other components. Be sure to
allow sufficient space for interconnection.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
