A. Introduction

Thank you for selecting PixCat, another amazing product from MIDPA
Softworks. PixCat is used for printing a catalog of all pictures in a
NewsMaster(tm), PrintMaster(tm), Print Shop(tm), or New Print Shop(tm)
graphics library.

Depending on the type of printer you have, and the libraries you are
using, PixCat prints approximately 56 pictures per page in a matrix 7
pictures wide by 8 pictures deep.

PixCat enables you to see, at a glance, the entire contents of a
graphics library. That, in turn, is a great help when you want to plan
your next newsletter or poster; Pixcat enables you to compare available
pictures to determine which would be most appropriate.

B. Hardware Requirements

Pixcat will run on IBM PCs, ATs, PS/2s and true compatibles.

PixCat requires at least 256K of memory and MS DOS or PC DOS versions
2.00 or higher. PixCat may run under other configurations but, those
have not yet been tested. If you are not sure whether PixCat will run
on your machine, try it and see what happens.

C. Setup

Files that should be on your disk include:

PIXCAT.EXE PixCat program. For those of you that have earlier
versions, this replaces PixCatPM.COM and PixCatPS.COM.

PIXCATBW.BAT Invoke PixCat in "Black and White".

PIXCAT.HLP Data required by the PixCat help system.

PIXCAT.CFG The PixCat configuration file. This "remembers"
screen colors, printer type, and other parameters. If
this file is not in your default directory, PixCat will
provide default colors and assume you are using an
Epson FX+ type printer. Once in PixCat, you can adjust
these parameters and create or update this file by
using the "Save Configuration File" option on the main

menu. This replaces any PIXCAT.CFG file(s) from PixCat
versions prior to version 2.0.

PIXCAT.CFP PixCat printer configuration file. This replaces any
PIXCAT.CFG files from earlier versions.

*.CFP (optional) Additional printer configuration files.

PIXCAT.DOC The documentation you are now reading.

PIXCAT.HST History of Modifications to PixCat.

INVOICE.DOC PixCat Invoice/Registration Form and Customer Survey.

READ.ME General information and comments.

Ensure that your default directory path contains the PIXCAT.HLP file,
all "*.CFP" file(s) and, if it has already been created, the PIXCAT.CFG
configuration file.

D. Operating PixCat

To invoke PixCat, type in "pixcat" at the Dos Prompt then press enter.

i.e. A:\> pixcat

PixCat can also be invoked using the following optional switches:

-m for monochrome i.e. black and white display.

-c to eliminate CGA "snow".

-b to display using BIOS calls (if you don't know what this is
you probably don't need it).

For example to invoke PixCat with a black and white display:

A:\> pixcat -m

To invoke PixCat eliminating CGA "snow" and using BIOS calls:

A:\> pixcat -cb

Regardless of the options you use, after entering "pixcat" on the DOS
command line, the following "primary selection" menu will be displayed:

The first menu line lists the options available from the menu
("Information", "Print", "Config", "OS Shell", and "Exit"). The second
menu line describes the highlighted choice. In this case, the second
line describes the "Information" selection.

"Information" provides product and license information.

"Print" provides a menu for printing pictures from the various graphics
libraries.

"Config" is used to change screen colors, graphics library directories,
or specify printer. The first time you use Pixcat, and any time your
hardware changes significantly, you may want to adjust "Config"
parameters. Please note that any changes made will be active during
this session only unless explicitly saved by using the "Save" option on
the "Config" menu. UNSAVED CHANGES WILL BE LOST WHEN YOU EXIT PixCat.

"OS Shell" lets you "shell" to DOS to do various DOS commands (e.g. DIR
*.*, Erasing files, etc.). When you are finished with DOS and want to
return to PixCat, type "exit" on the DOS command line and press
"Enter".

"Exit" terminates PixCat and returns to the operating environment.
Press your left and right arrow keys to highlight selections. Press
"Down Arrow" to "pull down" a menu for the highlighted selection, or
"enter" to invoke the highlighted selection. If the highlighted
selection leads to another menu, "Down Arrow" and "Enter" have the same
effect.

For example, pressing down arrow from the previous screen would result
in the following:

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ[ Select Processing Option ]ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿

You can also invoke selections by entering the highlighted letter in
the selection code ("N" for NewsMaster, "F" for Form Feed).

sensitive, I mean that the help screen will pertain specifically to
whatever function you were doing when you pressed "F1". Once in the
help system, you can press "PgDn" or "PgUp" to move through multiple
page help screens. When "Also See" text is highlighted, you can use
your arrow keys to highlight related help topics then press "Enter" to
display them. To exit the help system and return to whatever you were
doing, press "Esc".

From just about any screen you can press Alt-X to exit i.e. hold down

When you try to "lock in" directory changes, PixCat will verify
adequate syntax; if any syntax errors are detected, PixCat will
produce an error message and automatically position cursor at the first
inappropriate character.

If a path is specified but the last backslash ("\") is not specified,
one will be automatically provided.

H. Selecting a Graphics Library to Print

To select and print a graphics library, select "Print" from the primary
selection menu then select the appropriate type of library from the
Config Menu:

graphics libraries. Selecting "(New Dir)" displays a window comparable
to the "Directories" window displayed from the "Config" menu.

You can print a graphics library appearing in the displayed list by
pointing to it and pressing enter. During library print, the screen

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
