Welcome to The NOMSSI Viewer!

This program is a graphics file viewer, that reads and displays images
stored within files with different formats. The NOMSSI Viewer works with
raster images, offering support for Windows and OS/2 2.x BMP, GIF, IFF/
LBM/HAM, PCX, TIFF, TGA and JFIF/JPEG files formats.

This file contains the following information:

- Some features
- Hardware requirements
- Licensing agreement
- Files in distribution
- Setting up The NOMSSI Viewer
- Acknowledgement
- Problems
- Function keys
- Disclaimer
- History

SOME FEATURES

The NOMSSI Viewer includes a multi-window filemanager to locate
and select files with mouse support, online help and a search
function that recursively scans directories for image files. The
scan parses all files and selects those who matches the supported
file formats specifications, it doesn't just rely on the file
extension.

The files can be viewed one at a time or selected for a slide show
with full user control. One can easily generate an array of images
using high quality image reduction.
There are no command line switches. All parameters, e.g. screen
resolution, monitor gamma, image scale etc. may be specified at run-
time in a setup dialog.

Once loaded, the images can undergo simple transformations and
colour editing, and then be dumped to a palette colour TIFF file.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

The NOMSSI Viewer Release 1.1 should run under DOS 3.3 or higher on
any IBM PC compatible with 640 Kb memory, 80286 processor and VGA
adapter or better. The JPEG decoding routines will run only with a
80386SX processor or better.

The NOMSSI Viewer detects and uses EMS, XMS or disk space to buffer
images for slideshows or transformations like rotating or scaling.
The SVGA chipsets
Acumos, Ahead, ATI, AL2101, Chips&Tech, Cirrus, Cirrus54, Compaq,
Everex, Genoa, MXIC, NCR, Oak, Paradise, Poach, PRIMUS, Realtek,
S3, Trident, ET3000, ET4000, Video7
and the VESA extensions should be autodetected, 256 colour modes are
used.

FILES IN DISTRIBUTION

The archive file contains:

README.NV ; This file
NV.EXE ; The executable
NV.HLP ; Online help texts
NVGER.HLP ; german help texts. Rename it to NV.HLP
REGISTER.FRM ; register form

You need PKUNZIP ver 2.04g or higher to 'unzip' the archive.

SETTING UP THE NOMSSI VIEWER

Create a target directory on your hard drive in which you want to
install The NOMSSI Viewer. If you want to update from a previous
version, first remove the config and help files (NV.CFG and NV.HLP)
from the target directory.

Copy all the files from the archive onto the target directory on
your hard drive. Start The NOMSSI Viewer typing NV.EXE at DOS prompt,
there are no command line switches, your machine configuration
(VGA chipset and video memory) is automatically detected.

Set the environment variable TEMP to a list of directories to look
in when creating a temporary file (i.e. insert SET TEMP=C:\TEMP;C:\
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot). If this variable doesn't exist,
the current directory is used.

First press F9 to open the setup window. Use the TAB-key and SHIFT+
TAB-key to navigate through the items and set your default options.
Press F1 to get help on the selected field. The file NV.CFG is
written or updated each time you leave the setup window.

Please refer to the help texts for further information, they are
available online trough the F1 key. If you still have trouble using
The NOMSSI Viewer, feel free to send an email to the address below
(including a valid return path and the program version, actually
The NOMSSI Viewer 1.1c).

If you need a VESA driver, check The Universal VESA VBE, a stand
alone program Copyright (C) 1993 by Kendall Bennett. It is available
via ftp from SIMTEL20 mirrors (i.e. Oak.Oakland.Edu) as
/pub/msdos/graphics/UVESAxx.ZIP

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

This program uses
- The VGADOC package version 2, Copyright (c) 1993 by Finn Th›gersen
- The JPEG Unit, Copyright (c) 1993 by TBH-Softworx
- The STREAMS package version 1.5, Copyright (c) 1993 by D.J. Murdoch.

PROBLEMS

- ILBM/HAM files are said to be 64 colours images, they are
nevertheless displayed correctly.
- Scrolling doesn't work in VGA-mode 320x200 on some chipsets,
so the "mosaic" will not work well.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
