ON SYSTEMS: (1) XT/Herc/360K/360K/10Meg/DOS 3.3
(2) AT/EGA/1.2Meg/360K/20Meg/DOS 3.3

FUNCTIONALITY:

EGA/CGA demo with outstanding color/shape features.

REVIEW:

From IBM research labs, this demo is one of the best (if not
THE best) "random pattern" demos I've ever seen. It includes
several each of basic shapes, symmetry modes, travel patterns,
color combinations, etc. The total combinations are effectively
infinite. The documentation, however, is inadequate --- there is
no .DOC file, only an inline F1 help screen which gives a brief
description of the features.

For those who like to play around with such things, this one
will provide MANY HOURS of joy. I've used my favorite screen-
capture utility to save several screens from CONFETTI simply
because they are so fantastic (once one has mastered the
techiques) that I want to be able to show them to my friends
(particularly those who don't have EGA --- I love to watch their
mouths drop open). Although CONFETTI works with CGA, the full
effects are not nearly as striking as they are in EGA mode.

WARNING: this program is highly seductive. Don't use it at
work unless you either (1) are in high favor with your boss and
can get away with fooling around some of the time or (2) have a
good deadbolt on your office door.

A "similar but totally different" (how's that for a
contradiction in terms?) program is GRDEMO, which does much more
with straight-line combinations than CONFETTI and which also has
user-modifiable parameters which in some ways give it more
flexibility than CONFETTI. GRDEMO is interesting in its own right
but does not produce screens that you're likely to write home
about or save to show your friends.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
