CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

This manual is organized for use as an initial setup guide and
reference book. Introductory information on TranScan is followed
by installation and configuration instructions.

Unless you are intimately familiar with TranScan, you should
probably read this entire manual. TranScan is a very powerful
and configurable program. There is no substitute for reading
this reference to become familiar with the numerous features
available.

WHY DO I NEED TRANSCAN?

Every computer user that transfers files from one system to
another should be concerned about the spread of computer viruses.
Today most users implement some form of virus protection on their
systems. But, many people wrongly assume that their virus
scanner will detect viruses even in compressed files. They cant!

TranScan uncompresses files to their original size so that the
virus scanner can check for viruses. While doing so it checks
the file for integrity and can also evaluate the age or date of
the file. TranScan can also test GIF files for integrity and
minimum resolution.

TranScan recompresses files to your default compression method
maintaining the file directory structure and volume labels. It
can delete unwanted files, add files, and add ARJ or ZIP file
comments.

TranScan provides even more for the SysOp maintaining a Bulletin
Board Service (BBB). For most BBB software it can process files
immediately following the upload while the caller is on-line. It
displays COMM output to the caller, tests files for integrity,
viruses, age or date, and minimum GIF resolution. It also
imports FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI and GIF comment files into the BBS
file database. It can also export user descriptions to a
DESC.SDI file placed inside the uploaded file. For some BBS
software packages (like Wildcat) it even writes thank you
messages to the user.

TranScan is packed with features. Each feature can be selected
from the TranScan configuration menu. On-line context sensitive
help is available to guide you through every step.

Yes, there are programs that can do what TranScan does. But,
none of them can compare feature for feature. You could use
something else, but TranScan makes it too easy to try.

CHAPTER 2 - INSTALLING TRANSCAN

TranScan was designed to be easy to install. Simply extract
TS.EXE, TS.OVR, and TS.HLP to a directory in your path. Next, at
your DOS prompt type the following:

TS

Before configuring we recommend you read the rest of Chapter 2
and Chapter 3 (see page 12). If you will use TranScan with a BBS
please read the section "USING TRANSCAN WITH A BBS" in the
Appendix (see page 21).

Before running TranScan we recommend you make a backup. Test
your setup on a few files and see that things are working
correctly. There are so many options that setting one
incorrectly could result in un-recoverable loss (unless you have
a backup of course).

TRANSCAN'S MENU SYSTEM

TranScan's menu system is arranged to provide access to the more
commonly used features first. As you progress through the menu
the options and features become more advanced. The following
describes the main menu options.

MAIN

There are five selections at the "Main" menu:

Select Pressing here activates the "Select" sub-
menu that allows you to select which files to
process and what actions you want taken on each of
these files.

Process Pressing here tells TranScan to Process
the files you selected above. You will notice
that you cannot move to this option unless you
have selected a file for processing from the
"Select" sub-menu.

Configure Pressing here presents a "Configure" sub-
menu that allows you to "fine-tune" the way
TranScan works on your system. You can select
paths, memory, display, default compressors and
much more.

Help Pressing here activates a "Help" sub-menu.
There are two options on this sub-menu. The first
option "About" tells you important information
about TranScan like version number, registration

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 6
-----------------------------------------------------------------

number and where to call to order using Master
Card or Visa.

The second option "Help Index" displays an index
of all the online help topics that are available.

Quit Pressing here presents a "Quit" sub-menu.
There are two options on this sub menu as well.
The first option allows you to "Exit" TranScan.
If you have made any changes to your configuration
without saving them you will be prompted as to
whether or not to save them.

The second option "Drop to DOS" allows you to
temporarily drop to DOS. You can return from DOS
by typing EXIT at your DOS prompt.

SELECT

The "Select" menu is divided into two sections. The top section
allows you to select which files, paths, or drives to process.
The bottom section allows you to select what actions you want
taken on each of the files selected.

Selection-I

FileMask You can change the "FileMask" by pressing
at this prompt. You will then be prompted for the
"FileMask" you wish to use. The default is "*.*.
Regardless of whether you select "Files", "Paths"
or "Drives" each file will be compared with this
mask before it is processed.

Files Press here and a file selector will
appear. It will display a list of files for the
current directory. You can select a file for
processing by moving the cursor to the file and
pressing . You can select or deselect all
the files by pressing . You can also
change directories by moving the cursor to a
directory name. However, you can only select
files from one directory. If you change
directories your earlier selections will be
unselected.

Speed searching is built-in. To move the cursor
to a specific file you can start typing the
filename and the cursor will move to that file.
The letters you type will appear on the bottom
left portion of the frame.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 7
-----------------------------------------------------------------

You should notice that the filemask you selected
will be used to determine which files should
appear in the selector. The current directory and
filemask are centered at the top of the frame.

You should also notice that the number of files
selected appears on the bottom of the frame.

When you return from this menu by pressing
or you will notice the the selector (small
box character) is in the parenthesis next to
"Files." If you move to "Paths" or "Drives" the
selector will move and any prior selections made
in files will be unselected.

Occasionally TranScan will report "Too Many
Files!" This means that there was not enough
memory to load all the files in the directory
selected into memory. In this case you should
either select "Paths" or "Drives" to process the
files or use TranScan from the DOS prompt.

Paths Press here and a file directory selector
will appear. You select which directories you
want processed by pressing the . You can
select or deselect all the files by pressing
.

Speed searching is built-in. To move the cursor
to a specific path you can start typing the
pathname and the cursor will move to that path.
The letters you type will appear on the bottom
left portion of the frame.

The number of paths selected will appear centered
at the bottom of the frame.

TranScan defaults to the paths on the current
drive. To process paths on a different drive
simply exit TranScan and change drives. Then
restart TranScan.

Drives Press here and a drive selector will
appear. TranScan will attempt to determine if the
drive is ready and if so what "Disk Type" it is.
It will also try to determine the disk capacity,
amount free, and what percent is free. You select
the drives for processing by pressing .

The TranScan drive selector can recognize most
drives types but occasionally it will report

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 8
-----------------------------------------------------------------

"Drive Type Unknown". You can still select these
drives by pressing .

Speed searching is built-in. To move the cursor
to a specific drive just type the drive letter and
the cursor will move to that drive.

The number of drives presented in the list is
based on your setting of "LastDrive" command in
your CONFIG.SYS. Consult your DOS manual for more
information.

SECTION-II

Time Limit You can establish a time limit for TranScan to
continue processing. Just enter the time in hours
and minutes and make sure that the selector (box
character) appears in the brackets. TranScan will
process files until this time limit is reached or
it runs out of files. It will continue processing
the file it is working on however.

Virus Scan You can select whether or not processing will
include Virus Scanning using your selected virus
scanners. One example of when this might be
necessary is when you have already scanned the
files but you wish to convert them to another
archive format.

Compress You can select whether or not processing will
include Compressing and Converting with this
option. You should also notice that your default
compression method is displayed at this prompt.

GIF & JPG You can select whether or not GIF & JPG processing
will take place. What processes occur are further
determined by your selections in the
configuration.

Add File
Comment You can select whether or not a ZIP or ARJ comment
will be added to the file after processing.

The options you select here will be saved if you save the
configuration. In this way the options you use most frequently
will always be available.

PROCESS

This is like TranScan's "GO" button. After you have made your
file, path, or directory selection you can press here and

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 9
-----------------------------------------------------------------

TranScan will spring into life. You can abort processing by
pressing the key (note that TranScan will finish processing
the current file before aborting).

If there are no files, paths, or drives selected this option will
not be available.

TRANSCAN'S CONTEXT SENSITIVE HELP

TranScan has an extensive help system. At any prompt simply
press to activate the help. The following options are
available within the help system.

CHAPTER 3 - FEATURES IN DEPTH

FILE TIME STAMPING & AGE/DATE REJECTION

TranScan's "Time Stamping" feature is completely configurable by
the user. To select your option go to "Configure-TranScan
Options". In this section we will be discussing the following
prompts:

Time Stamp Method: Keep
Age or Date Reject: None
Max Age in Days: 0
Rejection Date: 01/01/00
Date Test GIF Files: N

TranScan will Time Stamp the compressed file based on your
selection here. Options include:
Keep Keep the original file date.
Current Stamp the file with the current date.
Oldest Stamp the file with the date of the Oldest file in
the archive.
OldestEXE Stamp the file with the date of the Oldest EXE
file in the archive.
Youngest Stamp the file with the date of the Youngest file
in the archive.
YoungestEXE Stamp the file with the date of the Youngest EXE
file in the archive.

For example assume the current date is April 1, 1993 and the time
is 03:00 am. The following archive would result with the
following time stamps:

FileName Date Time Time Stamp
SAMPLE.ZIP 01/01/93 12:00 am Keep

- VENDOR.DOC 01/01/89 12:00 am Oldest

- UTIL.EXE 01/01/90 12:00 am Oldest EXE
- PRGM.EXE 01/01/91 12:00 am Youngest EXE

- BBS.ADD 01/01/92 12:00 am Youngest

Computer Clock 04/01/93 03:00 am Current

How you set this option also affects the Age/Date Rejection.
With TranScan you can reject files that are older than a specific
date or number of days. Your choices are "None", "Age" or
"Date". If you select "None" no Age/Date testing will take

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 13
-----------------------------------------------------------------

place. If you select "Age" you will then be asked to select the
"Max Age in Days" to accept. If you select "Date" you will then
be asked to select the "Rejection Date". All files "Time
Stamped" older than this number of days or date will be rejected.

You also have the option of testing GIF files for Age/Date
rejection. If you select "N" for "Date Test GIF Files?" then GIF
files will NOT be tested for age/date. If you select "Y" then
all GIF files must also meet your age/date test.

GIF TESTING AND CONVERTING

TranScan has the ability to detect and test GIF files for
Integrity, Resolution, and GIF comments. In this section we will
be discussing the following "Configuration-TranScan Option"
prompts:

Date Test GIF Files? N
Min. GIF Resolution[WxHxC]: 0x 0x 0

TranScan has GIF Integrity testing built in. It tests all GIF
files against the GIF87a and GIF89a standards. It cannot
determine if the picture is good or bad, but it can determine if
the GIF file meets the entire standard.

"Date Test GIF Files?" allows you to determine if your GIF files
must meet the same age/date requirements you impose on other
files.

"Min. GIF Resolution[WxHxC]" allows you to select the minimum
height and width and number of colors in the color pallette for
all GIFs. TranScan determines the GIF Resolution as it is
testing the file for integrity. If the file falls below your
required Minimum resolution the file will fail.

TranScan also detects if the GIF has been compressed using
GIFLite. If it has and you have selected to GIFLite all GIF
files TranScan will NOT run GIFLite on this file. If it has not
then it will GIFLite this file.

You can also select converting GIF files to JPG and vice versa.
These selections are made from "Configuration-External Programs-
Gif Jpg Set-Up".

VIRUS SCANNING

TranScan can use almost any kind of Virus Scanner to process
files after they are UnCompressed. You select and/or configure
the virus scanner you wish to use from "Configuration-External

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 14
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Programs-Scanners".

One of the most popular virus scanners is ViruScan by McAfee and
Associates. If you are running TranScan on a network you will
need to use their NETSCAN.EXE program instead of SCAN.EXE.

TranScan always sends the file path as the first parameter. It
detects the errorlevel of the scanner program and if the
errorlevel is zero the scan passed. If the errorlevel was not
zero the scan failed.

FILE COMPRESSING & CONVERTING

There are several options in TranScan that control the
Compressing and Converting of files. This discussion will focus
on the following prompts found in "Configure-TranScan Options":

Default Compression Method: ZIP
...
Exclude ReCompressing Def? N
Compress Non-Compressed? N
Convert Imbedded Files? N
Convert Self Extract Files? N
Convert -AV Stamped Files? *N
...
* Options to be added in a future version.

Your selection of "Default Compression Method:" determines the
Compression Method your files will be converted to. For example,
if you select "ZIP" then "ARJ" files will be converted to "ZIP
files.

"Exclude ReCompressing Def?" determines whether or not files in
the default compression method will be ReCompressed by TranScan.
For example, if your "Default Compression Method:" is "ZIP" and
TranScan processes a "ZIP" file, it will only ReCompress the file
if this option is set to "N".

It should be noted that selecting to "Y" can adversly affect the
deleting of selected files to an archive. If you have files
listed in your TS.DEL file TranScan can only delete these files
if it will ReCompress the archive when it is finished scanning it
(see page 16).

"Compress Non-Compressed?" gives you the ability to convert text
and other non-compressed files to your default compression
method.

Imbedded Compressed files are like ZIPs within another ZIP. If

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 15
-----------------------------------------------------------------

you select "Y" to "Convert Imbedded Files?" TranScan will Convert
these files to your default format. You should note that doing
this may cause problems with some self installing programs.

"Convert Self Extract Files?" tells TranScan whether or not you
want those Self Extracting files (like PKZ204G.EXE) changed to
your default format or not (like PKZ204G.ZIP).

"Convert -AV Stamped files?" is an option that will be added in a
future version of TranScan.

WORK DRIVES, SWAP DRIVES, & MEMORY USAGE

The "Work Drive" is where all temporary directories will be
cereated and files extracted. If you have a 2MB RAM (Random
Access Memory) Drive you might wish to select this drive as your
work drive. This will speed up processing tremendously. I would
recommend a minimum of 2MB free for your Work Drive.

The "Swap Drive" is where TranScan will be swapped out if EMS is
not to be used or is not available. TranScan swaps out of memory
every time it calls an external program for processing. Again,
if you do not use EMS but you have a RAM drive with at least 5K
you might wish to select this drive. Again, this will speed up
processing tremendously. I would recommend a minimium of 5K free
for your Swap Drive.

In the "Configure-Memory Set-Up" the following prompts are
available:

Add To Overlay Buffer: 0
Use EMS for Overlay? Y
Use EMS for External Swap? Y

I recommend you do not change the "Add To Overlay Buffer: 0."
TranScan's Overlay handling has been optimized for speed using
it's preset Overlay Buffer Size.

I recommend you allow TranScan to use EMS for both Overlays and
External Swapping. EMS memory is much faster than Disk Drive
Access so it will speed up the program significantly. If
TranScan does not detect EMS it will use your disk drive.

TranScan tries to use EMS memory whenever it is available and as
much as available. When EMS memory is not available it must use
virtual memory which in most cases is DISK space. For example,
if sufficient memory is available TranScan will load the Overlay
File into EMS. It will also SWAP the program out of memory into
EMS before running any external programs like PKUNZIP.EXE. If

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 16
-----------------------------------------------------------------

you are concerned about TranScan using more than its fair share
of EMS you can change the amount available to any given window
from the ADVANCED OPTIONS in DESQview. The value to change is
"Maximum Expanded Memory Size (in K):". Every BBS configuration
is different, but here at TranScan BBS (running Wildcat v3.6) I
have set this value to 1000 without any noticeable increase in
processing time.

TRANSCAN'S LOG FILE (TS.LOG)

TranScan maintains a log of its activity in this file. The log
displays the filename of each file processed and any error
messages sent during processing. It sumarizes each run with the
number of files and bytes processed and the number of bytes saved
or lost due to processing (recompressing, converting, deleting
files, adding files or comments, etc.). It also summarizes the
total external and internal time of processing.

See the appendix (see page 42) for a list of all error messages
that might appear in the TranScan Log.

TRANSCAN'S DELETE FILE (TS.DEL)

During ReCompression or Converting TranScan can delete files it
finds in the TS.DEL list file. This file is a simple ASCII text
file with each entry on a seperate line. You can use wildcards
in this list like "*" and "?". Be careful what files and masks
you include in this list. If TranScan finds the file in the
archive it will delete it. For example:

*BBS*.AD?
R&E???.AD?

You can also put a file's CRC value here instead of a name. Many
BBSs change the filename of their BBS.AD but not the ad itself.
That means the filename changes but the CRC does not. Registered
users can use a BONUS utility called CRCTEST available at
TRANSCAN BBS to determine this CRC value. For this feature to
work you also need to set Configure-TranScan Options "Duplicate
File CRC Test?" to "Y".

TRANSCAN'S BAD FILE

TranScan maintains a list of all files that it fails due to
Integrity, Viruses, Age or Minimum GIF Resolution. It writes the
filename and path to this file.

TRANSCAN LIST (TS.LST)

TS.LST is a simple ASCII text file. It is primarily used by BBS
systems to delay part of the processing of files until later.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 17
-----------------------------------------------------------------

You can also create an ASCII text file containing file paths and
names of files you wish processed in this list. You then run
TranScan from the command line as follows:

TS /L

TranScan will process the files and then delete this list.

ZIP & ARJ COMMENTS (TS.CMT)

TranScan uses TS.CMT as your ARJ or ZIP comment. You should make
this comment as small as possible. File comments are attached to
ARJ and ZIP fles without compression. If your comment is 500
bytes and you attach it to 100 files you will take up 50K of your
disk space per file.

TranScan strips comments from ZIP files BEFORE uncompressing.
You can have TranScan strip comments from ARJ files by making
TS.CMT a Zero Byte file. To do this select a filename, enter the
editor , press the bar once then to save the
file and to exit. You should now have an extreemly small
file comment.

TranScan will strip comments from Imbedded ARJ and ZIP files only
when ReCompressing or Converting.

TRANSCAN'S NOT FILE (TS.NOT)

This file is a list of all the directories and file names you do
not want TranScan to process. In this way you can protect files
or whole file areas or drives from having their files
accidentally deleted or converted. Possible directories you
might include here would be directories of old but still valuable
files, directories of files with author AV stamps attached to
them, etc. Wildcard characters like "*" and "?" are acceptable.

TRANSCAN'S DID FILE (TS.DID}

This file is a list of all the files TranScan has processed (if
the "List files already DID?" option in the "TranScan Options"
sub-menu is selected). This keeps TranScan from processing a
file more than once. Wildcard characters like "*" and "?" are
acceptable.

TRANSCAN'S ADD LIST

This sub-menu in TranScan "Configuration" includes the full file
path and name of ASCII text files you want added to each archive
TranScan processes. Possible uses might include a BBS or User
Group ad. You can edit these files using the built in editor by
pressing the key.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 18
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Files in this list are only added to archives if the file is
ReCompressed or Converted. TranScan will not add files to
imbedded or self extracting files.

TRANSCAN AND ZIP VOLUME LABELS

A TranScan user suggested the following for retaining volume
labels. He uses a RAM DRIVE as his "Work Drive" (suggested
minimum is 2MB). He added a -$ to the command line for
PKUNZIP.EXE and -$E to the command line for PKZIP.EXE. The "E"
is the drive letter for his RAM DRIVE.

Since PKZip extracts the files to this drive it changes the
volume label. When it compresses them again it changes the
volume label back.

You could do this with any drive if you don't really care what
the volume label of that disk is. It will change frequently.

TRANSCAN'S COMMAND LINES

TranScan offers a complete set of command line options to allow
users to create special batch files to automate processing. Many
options are logically grouped together. In these cases you
follow the first option with a comma followed by the next option.
In these cases it is important not to put any spaces between the
comma and the second options. For example:

TS c:\upload\test.zip /P1,$03F8,4,T /CNONE

TS TranScan program name.
c:\upload\test.zip Filename passed to TranScan.
/P1,$03F8,4,T Port information TranScan uses to display
info out the COMM Port:
1 = Port Number
$03F8 = Base Address
4 = Irq
T = Use RtsCts flow control.

/CNONE Do not Convert or Compress the file.

The following is a summary of all the command line options
available.

TRANSCAN'S ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE

SET TSCFG=

You can include this environment variable before running TranScan
to use a different TranScan configuration file. Just include the
full path and filename to the new configuration file. TranScan
will create this file if it does not exist and you can configure
it. For example:

SET TSCFG=C:\WC30\TS-WC.CFG

This might be your configuration file for using TranScan with
Wildcat. You might have a seperate configuration file for
Qmodem-Pro, etc.

You can return to the default configuration file "TS.CFG" located
in the same directory as TranScan (TS.EXE, TS.OVR, and TS.HLP)
simply by removing this variable. For example:

SET TSCFG=

USING TRANSCAN WITH A BBS
TranScan was originaly designed to work with the Wildcat v3+ BBS.
From the beginning SysOps running other BBS software have
requested that TranScan be written to work with their BBS
software too. TranScan v4+ was designed with this objective in
mind.

CONFIGURATION

Configuring TranScan to work with a BBS is extreemely easy. Most
of the options you need have been pre-set for you based on the
most popular configurations. Based on your selection for "BBS"
the configurable items available to your BBS will be displayed
for configuration. If you are not able to move the cursor to an
item on the "BBS Set-Up" menu that indicates that item is not
available for your BBS at this time.

On-line context sensitive help is available at every prompt. I
recommend you use the on-line help as you select each prompt.

POST-UPLOAD(ON-LINE) AND EVENT(OFF-LINE)

With TranScan there are basically two different times when you
can process files in a BBS environment.

POST-UPLOAD(ON-LINE)

Post-Upload file processing is becomming more and more popular
with most of the BBS software packages these days. The BBS
provides a DOS batch file that is run immediately following the
upload. The BBS usually passes the filename to the batch file as
a batch environment variable or file list. Many BBSs also pass
node and port information to the batch file either thru a door
file or an environment variable.

The BBS detects success or failure in one of several different
ways. Some boards look for a particular file to determine
success or failure. Others look for an errorlevel while some
expect the file to be moved or deleted if it fails.

EVENT (OFF-LINE)

Some BBS programs can delay part of the file processing to be
done off-line. For example re-compressing, converting, or
processing GIF/JPG files. If your BBS allows off-line processing
you can select "CompressOffLine?" and "Do GIF/JPGs OffLine?" from
the BBS Set-Up menu. After TranScan completes the initial
processing in the POST-UPLOAD process it will write the full
filename and path to your TS.LST file. You should create an

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 24
-----------------------------------------------------------------

event to allow TranScan to complete processing (re-compressing,
converting, processing GIF/JPGs). The command line for this
event is as follows:

TS -L

Some BBSs offer a batch file that is called between calls. Many
SysOps like to run "TS -L" in this batch file so that the files
are uploaded off-line but immediately after the caller logs off.
Other BBSs offer daily timed events. TranScan can process the
list in a timed event as well. If TranScan does not detect the
TS.LST file it will simply exit.

COMM OUTPUT

TranScan can provide COMM output during the POST-UPLOAD process
so that your on-line caller can watch TranScan test their upload.
In some cases TranScan determines the port information directly
from the BBS through the use of a DOOR.SYS, PCBOARD.SYS,
PCBOARD.DAT, or other similar door file. In other cases TranScan
determines the port information from an environment variable or
batch file variable (%1, %2, etc). Please refer to your specific
BBS information below.

The TranScan command line to display COMM output is as follows:

/Pport,base,irq,RtsCts

port = COMM port number
base = base address in hex
irq = irq interupt
RtsCts = Hardware Flow Control (T or F)

For the DIGI board the command line is as follows:

/Pport,DIGI

port = COMM port number

The following are example settings based on established IBM PC
(and de facto) standards:

/P1,$03F8,4,T
/P2,$02F8,3,T
/P3,$03E8,4,T
/P4,$02E8,3,T

The following are example settings based on established IMB PS/2
standards:

FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI & GIF DESCRIPTIONS

The way TranScan handles FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, and GIF
descriptions has proven to be one of it's most powerful features
(this feature is only available with some BBSs). To understand
what it does with these files you should first understand what
these files are.

FILE_ID.DIZ

FILE_ID.DIZ was created by Clark Development (PCBoard BBS) for
use with their PCBDescribe utility. It is a means for BBS
callers to upload a file without having to manually type in a
file description. It has since been accepted more-or-less as the
"standard" archive file description. The general opinion is that
FILE_ID.DIZ files should ONLY be added by the program AUTHOR.

The file consists of straight ASCII text, up to 10 lines of text,
each line being no more than 45 characters long. It should not
contain any blank lines, any form of centering or formatting, or
any HI-ASCII or ANSI charcters. It is recommended that it
consist of 5 basic parts:
1. The proper name of the program.
2. The version number.
3. The "" identifier (optional, for ASP
members).
4. The description seperator "-".
5. The description.

The description should attempt to FULLY describe the program,
including its most important functions and features. The author
should attempt to use the first two lines to give a basic
description because many BBS Software programs only use the first
60 to 80 characters.

DESC.SDI

I have not been able to find out much about DESC.SDI files. Some
sources indicate that this file should be a single line of text
and yet others describe a text file several lines long. Unlike
the FILE_ID.DIZ it seems appropriate for NON-AUTHORS to add these
files.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 26
-----------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to reading these files TranScan will create these
files based on the description entered by the user if there is
neither a FILE_ID.DIZ or DESC.SDI file (available only with some
BBS software).

GIF DESCRIPTIONS

GIF standard 89a added the possibility of putting text comments
inside GIF files. GIFFY-"The GIF Comment Editor", written by the
Author of TranScan, is a BONUS utility for registered TranScan
users to view and edit GIF comments.

TRANSCAN & DESCRIPTION FILES

Because so few people follow the above described standards,
TranScan will accept and process FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, and GIF
descriptions of any size and format. It will strip HI_ASCII and
ANSI characters, and extra spaces from the description and use
word wrapping to import the description to the BBS (available
only with some BBS software).

WILDCAT V3+ & WILDCAT-IM

TranScan provides direct support for Wildcat v3+ and Wildcat-IM
including updating the file database, writing messages to users,
reading COMM information from MAKEWILD.DAT and environment
variables, and writing to the Wildcat activity log.

SCANFILE.BAT

Create a SCANFILE.BAT file in the Wildcat home directory (where
MAKEWILD.DAT lives) as follows:

TS %1

TranScan receives the filename from Wildcat through the %1
environment variable. It reads the node, port, and file
information by reading a combination of the following Wildcat
files. MAKEWILD.DAT, CONFDESC.DAT, ALLFILES.DAT, ALLFILES.IX,
DOOR.SYS and USERINFO.DAT. If a virus is detected it writes a
SCANFILE.BAD file in the NODEx directory. Wildcat detects the
presence of this file upon return and rejects the file.

UPDATE FILE DATABASE DATE

In the TranScan BBS Set-Up you have the option of updating the
Wildcat File Database Date. If this is selected TranScan will
change the file date in Wildcat to match the date of the actual
file. This is the date after TranScan has "Time Stamped" the
file using your default time stamp method.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 27
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I recommend that you select "N" for this option. Selecting "Y"
will change the filedate in Wildcat from the date and time of
upload to the actual date of the file. This means that the [N]ew
file search in Wildcat will no longer work correctly.

So, why is this feature available. This works great when you are
doing a large scale conversion of your entire file database. In
this way you could FRESHEN your Wildcat filedate to display the
actual file dates for all your older files.

MESSAGES TO USERS

TranScan has the ability to send messages directly to users
through the use of *.IMP files. You should extract the *.IMP
files from the WILDCAT.ZIP file and place them in the same
directory as your MSG000.DAT file (usually c:\wc30\msg). Be sure
to edit these files to suit your taste.

You will notice that these files have "@" codes. Wildcat uses
these codes to display user and system specific information when
it displays the message. I am often asked why it displays the
SySop's statistics instead of the User's. The reason, of course,
is that it displays the statistics of the person viewing the
file. When the user displays the file it displays their first
name (@FIRST@) and their file statistics.

TranScan is designed to only send one Thank You message even on
multiple uploads. It will send a message if it encounters a
problem and display the filename that caused the problem in the
subject of those messages.

AUTONODE

If you use the AUTONODE feature of Wildcat you will need to
create a SCANFILE.RUN file in each node directory (NODE1, NODE2,
etc.) as follows:

cd\wc30\wcwork\node1 rem or node2 or node3 etc.
TS %1

OFF-LINE PROCESSING

If you selected "Y" to either "Compress OffLine?" or "Do GIF/JPGs
OffLine?" you will need to add the following to either your
POSTCALL.BAT or daily event batch file:

TS -L

It is important to complete Off-Line processing before moving
files to other directories on your BBS. Some SysOps add the

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 28
-----------------------------------------------------------------

above command line to a SYSOP1.BAT file so that they can process
the files before moving them. If this is done remotely TranScan
will display output through the COMM port durring this
processing.

TRANSCAN & WCPRO

For the reasons stated above in Off-Line processing, you may wish
to create a batch file to invoke WCPRO. In this way you are
certain to complete Off-Line processing before moving files. The
following is an example:

cd\wc30
TS -L
WCPRO

TRANSCAN & ORPHAN FILES

An Orphan file is a file that is in a valid Wildcat file
directory path that is not yet in the Wildcat file database.
TranScan can add Orphan files to your Wildcat database "on the
fly". Here at TranScan BBS I have my QMPRO configured to put all
downloads in my wildcat UPLOADS directory. I have created a
AMPRO.BAT file as follows:

cd\qmpro
QMPRO
TS C:\FILES\UPLOADS\*.* -D

TranScan checks all the files in the UPLOADS directory against
the list of files (TS.DID) that it has already processed. If it
finds a file that it has not already processed it will TranScan
it for viruses, recompress it, and then add the new file and
description (if there was one) to your Wildcat database. This
eliminates any need to use the LOCAL UPLOAD feature in Wildcat.
In fact, you could have QMPRO.BAT run WCPRO.BAT right after
TranScan so that you would not forget to move these new uploads
to their proper directories.

UPDATING YOUR ALLFILES.ZIP FILE DATE

TranScan can update the filedate in Wildcat of your ALLFILES.ZIP
file quite easily. After creating or updating this file in your
daily event call TranScan with the following command line:

TS C:\path\ALLFILES.ZIP /TK,T

The /TK,T tells TranScan to KEEP the TimeStamp of the file and
the "T" tells TranScan to UPDATE the BBS filedate.

RECOMMENDED CHANGES TO WCTEXT.DAT

I recommend you change the prompts in your WCTEXT.DAT file if you
are using TranScan.

PROBLEM SOLVING WITH WILDCAT

1) The most common problem encountered with the Wildcat Set-Up
involves finding the MAKEWILD.DAT. Your \WC30 directory MUST be
in your path!

2) There should only be one copy of MAKEWILD.DAT on your system.
It is quite common to find extra MAKEWILD.DAT files on a system.
This is caused by running MAKEWILD.EXE from a directory other
than \WC30. This can be avoided by creating a batch file to call
MAKEWILD.EXE. I have created the following MAKEWILD.BAT and
located it in my root directory on drive C: (which is also the
first directory in my path statement):

c:
cd\wc30
makewild.exe

3) Another common problem involves running TranScan when another
node is active without defining a new NodeId. This usually
happens under DESQview when a user opens the BIG DOS window and
runs TranScan or WcPro. You can avoid problem like this by going
into DESQview's "Change Program" for the "Big DOS" window and
changing the following:

Program...: Set

Parameters: wcnodeid=250

Directory.: c:\wc30
It is important to note that users with the SINGLE line version
of Wildcat MUST NEVER run Wildcat and TranScan at the same time.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 30

PCBOARD V14.5

TranScan provides support for PCBoard BBSs. It will display COM
ouput reading the PCBOARD.DAT and PCBOARD.SYS files for port
information. It will also update the UPDESC. file importing
FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, and GIF descriptions. Many other features
are not available but will be added in the near future.

PCBTEST.BAT

Create a PCBTEST.BAT file in the PCBoard home directory (where
PCBOARD.DAT lives) as follows:

TS %1 /%2,%3 /CNONE

TranScan will read the PCBOARD.DAT and PCBOARD.SYS files for port
information. It will receive the filename from the %1 variable,
"UPLOAD" or "TEST" from the %2 variable, and the full path and
filename to the UPDESC file in the %3 variable. "/CNONE" tells
TranScan to not convert the files online.

After processing TranScan will write a PCBFAIL.TXT file if the
file failed. It will update the UPDESC. file importing the
FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, and GIF descriptions.

PROBLEM SOLVING WITH PCBOARD

1) It is extreemely important that you use the /SWAP variable in
the PCB environment. For example:

SET PCB=/SWAP

GAP BBS

TranScan provides COMM output for GAP. It also imports the
FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, and GIF descriptions. Other features will
be added at a future date.

Create a new UPCHECK.BAT file as follows:

IF %6==0 TS %1 /P1,$03F8,4,T
IF NOT %6==0 TS %1

If the file is failed it should be moved or deleted. GAP will
notice the file is missing and fail the upload and display
"...failed the integrity check." TranScan can convert the file
online and GAP will recognize the changed file extension.

TranScan creates a DESC.SDI file in the Upload Directory Path.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 31
-----------------------------------------------------------------

It creates this file from either a FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, or GIF
description found inside the archive. GAP reads this file and
imports it into the file description and key words.

WILDCAT-TD (v2.60)

TranScan provides limited support for Wildcat-TD (test drive
v2.60) BBS. It will display COM output when used with External
Uploads. It will NOT update databses, import FILE_ID.DIZ,
DESC.SDI, or GIF descriptions. There are no plans to support
these features in the future for Wildcat Test Drive.

The following is an example external upload batch file for
ZModem:

cd\wildcat\ep
dsz port %2 speed %1 RZ %3
copy %3 %4
Del %3
if %2==1 TS %5 /P1,$03F8,4,T /CNONE
if %2==2 TS %5 /P2,$02F8,3,T /CNONE

For files that are uploaded from internal protocols you will need
to run TranScan on those directories. It is suggested that you
set the"List files already DID?" to "Y" in the Configure-TranScan
Options. This will keep TranScan from processing files more than
once. The following is a sample batch file:

TS C:\FILES\UPLOADS\*.* C:\FILES\PRIVATE\*.* /CNONE

Note that you can include up to 10 filemasks on the TranScan
command line.

VBBS

TranScan only provides COM output for VBBS BBSs at this time.
Many other features are not available but will be added in the
near future.

The following is an example NEWUPLD.BAT file:

TS %1 /P1,$03F8,4,T /CNONE

SEARCHLIGHT

TranScan provides COM output for Searchlight BBSs. Just set the

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 32
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Searchlight Autodoor to run TranScan as follows:

Upload Autodoor

1. Command..........D:\ts d:\bbs\uploads.bbs\*.* /P1,$03F8,4,T
2. Directory path...D:\bbs\uploads.bbs\
3. Communications support..none
4. Abort method.....none
5. Write protection.no

If TranScan rejects a file, it is moved to a hold directory and
the BBS will report an aborted upload since no files reached the
regular Uploads directory.

Importing file descriptions through the use of Searchlight's
UPLIST.BBS file will be available in a future version.

RBBS

At this time RBBS does not leave enough memory available to run
TranScan while a caller is on-line. You should run TranScan from
a daily event as follows:

TS C:\FILES\UPLOADS\*.* /D /CNONE

GTPOWER

TranScan only provides COM output for GTPower BBSs at this time.
Many other features are not available but will be added in the
future.

The following is an example GT_VSCAN.BAT file:

if %2==1 TS /P1,$03F8,4,T /LC:\GTLOG\GT_RECV.LOG /CNONE
if %2--2 TS /P2,$02F8,3,T /LC:\GTLOG\GT_RECV.LOG /CNONE
REM >C:\GTLOG\GTRECV.LOG

Processing could also be done off-line by using GTLOGOFF.BAT as
follows:

TS C:\FILES\UPLOADS\*.* /D /CNONE

WWIV

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 33
-----------------------------------------------------------------

At this time WWIV does not leave enough memory available to run
TranScan while a caller is on-line. You should run TranScan from
a daily event as follows:

TS C:\FILES\UPLOADS\*.* /D /CNONE

OBLIVION/2

TranScan only provides COMM output for Oblivion/2 BBSs at this
time. Many other features are not available but will be added in
the near future.

The following is an example MAINTAIN.BAT :

TS %1 /P1,$03F8,4,T

SPITFIRE

Spitfire does not have a Post-Upload hook that allows testing
files immediately after upload. However, this processing can be
done from the External Upload batch files (SFEXTUPA.BAT,
SFEXTUPB.BAT, etc.) and after a caller hangs up (SFINIT.BAT).
You could also process the files in a daily event.

The following is an example ZModem upload batch file for using
TranScan during an External Upload:

BRK OFF
ECHO OFF
CD\SF\EXTERNAL
DSZ.COM %2 restrict rz
if %2==1 TS /P1,$03F8,4,T %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9 /CNONE /D
if %2==2 TS /P2,$02F8,3,T %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9 /CNONE /D
CD\SF
BRK ON

The following is an example SFINIT.BAT or event batch file:

TS C:\FILES\UPLOAD\*.* /CNONE /D

TRIBBS

TranScan only provides COMM output for TriBBS BBSs at this time.
Many other features are not available but will be added in the
future. The following is an example UPLOAD.BAT file for TriBBS:

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 34
-----------------------------------------------------------------

TS %1 /P1,$03F8,4,T

If the file is failed it should be moved or deleted.

REMOTE ACCESS V1.11

Remote Access v1.11 does not have a Post-Upload hook that allows
testing files immediately after upload. You could process files
either after a caller hangs up or in a daily event. The
following is an example batch file:

TS C:\FILES\UPLOAD\*.* /CNONE /D

If the file is failed it should be moved or deleted so that it is
not available for download. Also note that you can include up to
10 file masks on the TranScan command line.

REMOTE ACCESS V2.0 GAMMA

TranScan only provides COMM output for Remote Access v2.0 GAMMA
at this time. Many other features are not available but will be
added in the future.

The following command line should be added for your Upload Scan:

TS @ /P1,$03F8,4,T /CNONE *M

If the file is failed it should be moved or deleted. Remote
Access will notice the file is missing and fail the upload.

RENEGADE

TranScan only provides COMM output for Renegade at this time.
Many other features are not available but will be added in the
future.

The following is an example for your post upload batch file:

TS %1 /P1,$03F8,4,T /CNONE

If the file is failed it should be moved or deleted.

PRODOOR V3.4

TranScan only provides COMM output for ProDoor v3.4 at this time.
Many other features are not available but will be added in the

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 35
-----------------------------------------------------------------

future. The following batch file can be used to test uploads:

@echo off
rem -- process test uploads request - for ProDoor 3.4
rem -- %1-logfile, %2-testdir, %3-comport
rem -- if not files uploaded exit quietly
if not exist %2\*.* goto end
rem - test each uploaded file individually
if %3==1 TS %2\*.* /P1,$03F8,4,T /CNONE
if %3==2 ts %2\*.* /P2,$02F8,3,T /CNONE
if not exist %2 del %dszlog%
:end

TELEGARD

[Documentation for using TranScan with Telegard is still being
written. Please call the TRANSCAN BBS at 913-266-0781 for
information on using TranScan with Telegard.]

SYNCHRONET

TranScan provides COMM output for Synchronet BBSs. The following
instructions describe how to run TranScan with Synchronet BBS:

1) Put TS.EXE, TS.OVR, and TS.HLP in a directory in your path
and configure it.

2) Create a SCANFILE.BAT file in your \EXEC directory as
follows:

IF %2==1 TS %1 /P1,$03F8,4,T
IF %2==2 TS %1 /P2,$02FE,3,T
IF %2==3 TS %1 /P3,$03E8,4,T
IF %2==4 TS %1 /P4,$02E8,3,T

3) Run SCFG.BAT and go to Configure, File Transfers, Testable
files. Create an entry for every file extension you will
support (ZIP, LZH, ARJ, ARC, etc.)

Testable File Types
File Extension ZIP

Command Line %!SCANFILE %f %p

Working String Testing Upload with TranScan...

The command line will stay the same and only the file
extension will change.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 36
-----------------------------------------------------------------

4) Synchronet BBS does not SWAP out of memory during testing it
SHELLS. You will need to download SHROOM (latest filename
at time of writing was SHROM20A.ZIP). Put SHROOM.COM in a
directory in your path. Then Modify your SBBS.BAT file as
follows:

Old SBBS.BAT:

..\exec\sbbs %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

New SBBS.BAT:

SHROOM.COM ..\exec\sbbs %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

SHROOM.COM is a TSR that waits for a SHELL to DOS and then
SWAPS itself and the program loaded after it out of memory.
This give TranScan more memory to operate under.

SUPERBBS

[Documentation for using TranScan with SuperBBS is still being
written. Please call the TRANSCAN BBS at 913-266-0781 for
information on using TranScan with SuperBBS.]

QUICKBBS

[Documentation for using TranScan with QuickBBS is still being
written. Please call the TRANSCAN BBS at 913-266-0781 for
information on using TranScan with QuickBBS.]

POWERBBS

[Documentation for using TranScan with PowerBBS is still being
written. Please call the TRANSCAN BBS at 913-266-0781 for
information on using TranScan with PowerBBS.]

Other BBS Software

If your BBS software was not listed it is only because I have not
tested it with TranScan. Feel free to upload the SHAREWARE
version of your BBS software to TRANSCAN BBS at (913) 266-0781.
Be sure to leave a message if you have installed TranScan with
this software outlining how you did it.

WHAT IS SHAREWARE?

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and Commercial Software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.

TRANSCAN JR v4+

Distribution:

TRANSCAN JR is a BONUS utility for REGISTERED users of TranScan -
"The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" It SHOULD NOT be
distributed.

Description:

TranScan Jr. is a small version of TranScan. It functions
EXACTLY the same except it does not have the set-up and menu
screens. Under DESQview running Wildcat you can use a window as
small as 325k with TranScan Jr.

Your SCANFILE.BAT would only be slightly different as follows:

Regular TranScan: TS %1

TranScan Jr: TSJR %1

Your DAILY EVENT would also be slightly different as follows:

Regular TranScan: TS /L

TranScan Jr: TSJR /L

By default TranScan looks for the configuration file TS.CFG in
the same directory as TSJR.EXE and TSJR.OVR. This TS.CFG file is
created by TS.EXE so you should put all of these programs in the
same directory. Set-Up changes made in TS.EXE will automatically
be used with TSJR.EXE.

You can also force TSJR.EXE to read a different configuration by
using the SET TSCFG= environment variable. For example your
batch file might look like this:

SET TSCFG=C:\UTIL\TS.CFG
TSJR.EXE %1

You can also tell when "TranScan Jr" is running because that
program name will appear on the top line of the Screen, the
Processing Screen, and the OnLine Caller Screen.

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 47
-----------------------------------------------------------------

GIFFY v0.90a BETA

Distribution:

GIFFY is a BONUS utility for REGISTERED users of TranScan - "The
Permium File Scanner & Converter!" It SHOULD NOT be distributed.

Description:

GIFFY is a simple program that tests GIF files. It also provides
a built in GIF Comment editor.

Usage: GIFFY filename[.GIF]

GIFFY will read the GIF file testing all Data Blocks against the
GIF standard. Ift it detects a problem it will fail the file.
If the file passes and it is a GIF89a file it will then display
the comment editor. You can edit the existing comment or add
your own. Pressing [ESC] will save the comment. A summary will
then be displayed and the program will exit.

I plan on several enhancements to this program in the future.
Look for an update of GIFFY on the TRANSCAN BBS!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

CRCTEST v0.90 BETA

Distribution:

CRCTEST is a BONUS utility for REGISTERED users of TranScan -
"The Permium File Scanner & Converter!" It SHOULD NOT be
distributed.

Description:

CRCTEST is a simple program that tests files to determine their

CRC.

Usage: CRCTEST filename.ext

This information can now be used with TranScan. When you detect
a BBS ad you can use CRCTEST to calculate the CRC for this file
and put the 8 digit CRC value in your TS.DEL file. When TranScan
detects a file with this same CRC value it will delete the file.

CRC value are to files what finger prints are to people. Yes, it
is POSSIBLE for a file to share a CRC value with another file
just like it is possible for a person to have the same finger
prin. Right?

Actually, the chances are...

1 in 2,147,483,647
(One in Two Billion, One Hundred Forty-Seven Million,
Four Hundred Eighty-Three Thousand, Six Hundred Forty Seven)

I plan on several enhancements to this program in the future.
Look for an update of CRCTEST on the TRANSCAN BBS!

o The DOS window is back. It should correctly display the
PKZIP and PKUNZIP programs within the window correctly.
o I reduced the size of the GIF comment buffers by 75%. This
should eliminate the "Not Enough Memory for GIF Buffers!'
message, and also fix the problem where GIF Resolutions and
descriptions were not being written. It should also solve
the problems where GIF2JPG was not working.
o Added NETSCAN.EXE command line to Scanner List.
o Fixed problem where TranScan was not exiting with error
levels.

TranScan v4.05 (2/11/93)

o Fixed problem with TranScan reporting the WRONG file size in
the Wildcat database. The file size it was reporting was
the file size of the DESC.SDI file it had added instead of

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 50
-----------------------------------------------------------------

the file size of the archive.
o The handling of PKZip comments was changed slightly. It
will not do a hard return before displaying comment.
o When file is failed in TranScan the filename appears in the
subject of the message sent to the user in Wildcat.
o Rewrote routines that determine what kind of file is being
processed. The rewrite fixed a few problems with some
signatures and also increased the speed of this procedure
significantly.
o *.COM files are now treated exactly the same as *.EXE files
when date and time stamping with YoungestEXE and OldestEXE.
o Corrected all known problems concerning the importing of
short and long descriptions. This included the removal of
the ghost "*INFO" messages with Wildcat.
o TranScan was converting self extracting files even when this
was turned off in the config. This has been corrected.
o Corrected problem where TranScan correctly identified that a
file already existed on the BBS but changed the original
area in the Wildcat database to "0".
o Once again fixed Runtime Error 204.

TranScan v4.03 (02/08/93)

o Eliminated PKZIP Error 12 which was caused by TranScan
trying to compress a new DESC.SDI file when it did not
exist.
o GIF process:
Eliminated the Runtime Error 204.
"INFO" no longer appears if there is no long description.
User descriptions are now retained with GIF Resolutions
added.
o TranScan was not always adding files in the "TranScan Add
List"
o "Add to Overlay Buffer:" and "Use EMS for Overlay?" now work
correctly.
o Optimized Overlay. TranScan v4.03 uses 38k less memory than
TranScan v4.02.

TranScan v4.02 (02/03/93)

o TranScan was experiencing problems with NON-STANDARD IRQs.
This problem is now fixed.
o TranScan was trying to PKZIP a DESC.SDI file even though it
had not yet created it. This resulted in a "PKZIP.EXE
Error: 12".
o Changed the following prompt in "BBS Set-Up:
"GIF Short Desc?" to "Import Short Desc?"
"GIF Long Desc?" to "Import Long Desc?"
These features now work. If you want the FILE_ID.DIZ,
DESC.SDI, and internal GIF descriptions imported to your
short description select "Y". The same for Long

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 51
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Descriptions. If you select "N" TranScan will retain the
user entered description.
o TranScan was using the full 79 characters allowed for word
wrapping the long description in Wildcat. The SysOp editor
only supported 72 characters and WCPRO only supports 78
characters. The description looked fine when viewed in the
BBS. But, because it DID look bad in the SysOp editor and
WCPRO I adjusted the width to 72 characters.
o In the BBS Set-Up selecting "Left" for the "GIF Res. Pos."
was causing an additional resolution to be added to the
short description when TranScan processed the files a second
time. TranScan now determines if it previously wrote the
resolution and if so it will not rewrite it.
o TranScan was not exiting with the proper errorlevel in some
instances.
o Time stamping for "Youngest EXE" and "Oldest EXE" was not
working correctly.
o TranScan was incorrectly identifying some EXE files as Self
Extracting LZH files.
o Flashing light was not flashing when adding file comments.

TranScan v4.01 (02/02/93)

o If TS.HLP not found TranScan locked up durring Exit.
o Changed GIF Signature to "GIF8" instead of "GIF". TranScan
was incorrectly detecting some text files as GIF files.
o GIF descriptions added by users were not being saved even if
there was no description added by TranScan. It was telling
Wildcat that there was extended info even when there was
not.
o GIF Resolutions were not being imported.
o TranScan was not properly reading the "Configure-BBS Set-Up"
"Add DESC.SDI files?".
o When DESC.SDI files are added their file time is stamped the
same as the compressed file they are added to.
o If an External Program was not found TranScan was failing
the files as it should, but it was also carrying out
the"Reject Action:". It will now record this in the TS.LOG
but it WILL NOT delete the file.
o Improved the way TranScan decides whether or not to send a
message after an upload in Wildcat. It first checks to see
when the last upload to that node was made. If it was
yesterday it automatically sends a new message. If it was
not yesterday it checks to see if the last upload to the
node was by the same person making this upload. If it is
not it will not write a new message.
o Failed files were not being marked in the Wildcat Database
as failed.
o TranScan was not informing Wildct that the upload scan had
failed (it was not creating the SCANFILE.BAD file).
o TranScan was not updating the wildcat file database when a

TranScan - "The Premium File Scanner & Converter!" Page 52
-----------------------------------------------------------------

file was converted from one compression to another. Instead
it was adding the new file and not deleting the old record
in Wildcat.
o LHA and ZIP have both changed the signature on their Self
Extracting files with their most recent versions. In a
future version of TranScan it will support a number of entry
fields for signatures. For now I have hard coded the new
signatures in the program. You should download the most
recent PKZxxx.EXE and LHAxxx.EXE file as soon as possible.
o The DOS View window was overwriting the status line at the
bottom of the screen. I adjusted the window one row.
o When using "TS -L" to process the files OFFLINE with files
to be ADDED "Exclude Recompressing" set to "Y" PKZIP.EXE was
exiting with an Error: 12 "Nothing to do!". Consequently it
was failing the files. This problem should now be fixed.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
