Hi David,

This is a message cribbed from the FIDO echomail showing the performance
of the Bates Anti-Virus package. (It saved me retyping! 🙂 ).

Hi All

The following data is based on an article in the UK PCBW magazine
dated 23rd October 1990.

This is my analysis of their table of virus detection software
performance, I have limited my attention to the section of the table
listing detection and analysis performance. The table lists the
virus detection software in a best first order. Detection
performance allways overrides classification performance!

Bates Associates VIS V1.2
100%, 100%, 100%, 100%

Sophos Vaccine with Sweep V4.2
91%, 91%, 100%, 100%

S&S International Dr Solomon's Anti Virus Toolkit V4.2
78%, 62%, 100%, 64%

Visionsoft Immunizer V1.4
74%, 70%, 100%, 93%

Microcom Virex-PC
70%, 59%, 71%, 50%

McAfee Proscan V1.4
63%, 50%, 64%, 43%

PC Security Eliminator V1.17 9A
42%, 30%, 43%, 21%

PC Enhancements PC-Eye V1.1
43%, 34%, 21%, 18%

IBM Virscan V1.1
43%, 33%, 21%, 18%

Defiant Systems Virus Hunter V2.0
28%, 27%, 21%, 21%

The ratings under each virus are:
Detection of 110 Virii, Classification of 110 Virii, Detection of 11
Virii likely to threaten UK users in the present to medium term
future, Classification of 11 Virii likely to threaten UK users in
the immediate to medium term future.

Classification scores are rated against the nomenclature adopted by
Virus Bulletin.

Although I am tempted to ask where they got their virus samples
from, bearing in mind the fact that only one virus scanner found all
of them, and their previous connections with Messrs Bates Associates
when their mailing list was involved in the 'Aids Information Disk'
Trojan business last December, and I am also tempted to ask who
identified the 11 'present to medium term future threat' virii, I
must admit that it makes interesting reading.

Note that the '11' are the same viruses which Symantec/Norton Anti
Virus failed to detect recently.

Rgds
Denis
