HighTest Contest
Almost everyone at one time or another wants to know what the
fastest personal computer (in a particular category or class) is.
Even small business persons, school teachers, students and
professionals are looking for more PC performance. The trend will
probably continue forever as user interface technology becomes more
and more sophisticated and applications become smarter and smarter.
T H E C O N T E S T
We want to know who makes the FASTEST IBM-compatible systems, as
measured by HighTest Lite MIPS*16 and MIPS*32 scores. Each month, the
names of the five people who refer us to the five fastest PC's in each
category -- that can be verified by Intelligent Devices Corporation --
will be posted on the PC's Best (tm) BBS (begining Q3FY92) along with
MIPS*16 and MIPS*32 test result scores.
Real MIPS
We said "that can be verified"! No verification, no T-Shirt.
All systems must be running the latest version of MS-DOS (5.0 now) or
PC-DOS (in the case of IBM systems). Tests must be run with NO
autoexec.bat and config.sys files installed at bootup (so everyone is
comparing apples to apples) except for systems that must have special
video or disk device drivers installed in config.sys. Only verifiable
MIPS*16 and MIPS*32 scores will be accepted.
Contest Categories
The categories for testing PC include the following:
1. "Stock" Competition
a. The 5 fastest 8088 PC's.
b. The 5 fastest 80286 PC's.
c. The 5 fastest 80386 PC's.
d. The 5 fastest 80486 PC's.
e. The fastest PC of any type at any price.
f. The fastest PC of any type at the lowest price
2. "Nitro" Competition
These are PC that that are faster than "stock" PC's because
they have been accelerated by using special hardware modi-
fications such as fast crystals, CPU refrigeration devices,
faster cache memory, etc. Such systems must survive burn-in
testing of 48 hours at normal room temperatures of up to 80
degrees Fahrenheit (what good would a Nitro-PC be if it only
ran 10 milliseconds?).
Verification
Verification will be done by IDC staff or designated
representatives, either on IDC premises or at the site of the system
being verified. Under no circumstances will IDC accept unverified
test reports.
