Introduction
------------

The enclosed File Conversions Disk contains the latest Word for
Windows file converters (including the Word for the Macintosh file
converter), the latest version of HIMEM.SYS, and the PCX graphics
converter.

Please be aware that these files are beta versions and have not
completed the full testing cycle. If you experience problems with any
of these files, please report the problems to a product support
technician at Microsoft Product Support Services by calling
(206) 454-2030.

The two files on the enclosed disk, PCXIMP.EXE and CONV.EXE, were
compressed using the PKZIP file compression utility. Note that these
files are .EXE files and will decompress themselves when you run them.
To use the files, do the following (type all the commands without
using the quotation marks):

1. At the DOS prompt, type "md c:\tempfile" and press ENTER.

2. Insert the enclosed File Conversions Disk in Drive A.

3. Make Drive A the active drive by typing "a:" and pressing ENTER.

4. Type "copy a:\*.* c:\tempfile" and press ENTER.

5. Type "c:" and press ENTER.

6. Type "cd c:\tempfile" and press ENTER.

7. Type "PCXIMP" and press ENTER.

8. Type "CONV" and press ENTER.

Installing the File Converters
------------------------------

These file converters have been modified and improved to work more
efficiently with the latest version of Microsoft Windows.
To install the improved file converters, do the following:

1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor.

2. Verify that the WINWORD directory is in the DOS path. If you have a
full version of Windows, verify that the WINDOWS directory is also
in your path. The path should look something like the following:

path=c:\;c:\dos;c:\windows;c:\winword

3. If your path does not contain the necessary directories, use your
text editor to edit the path in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and save the
file. Reboot your system by pressing ALT+CTRL+DEL. If you have any
questions regarding this procedure, consult your DOS manual.

4. Format a high-density floppy disk by inserting it in Drive A,
typing the following, and pressing ENTER.

format a:

Be sure to specify a:.

5. Make a backup of all the files in the WINWORD directory ending with
.DLL by typing the following and pressing ENTER (if the WINWORD
directory is on a drive other than Drive C, make the appropriate
adjustment to the commands):

copy c:\winword\*.DLL a:\

6. Remove the disk from Drive A and label it with a descriptive name,
such as "Old File Converters."

7. Type the following (substituting the correct drive, if necessary)
and press ENTER:

del c:\winword\CONV*.DLL

8. To install the new file filters, type the following command
(substituting the correct drive for the WINWORD directory, if
necessary) and press ENTER:

copy c:\tempfile\*.DLL c:\winword

Defining the File Converters
----------------------------

File converters require a definition in the WIN.INI file. If the
conversion .DLL files are in the WINWORD directory and the WIN.INI
file can be found in the DOS path, Word will automatically add this
definition for you the next time you start Word. If this is not the
case, you must edit the WIN.INI file manually and add the following
section:

[Microsoft Word]
Conversion=Yes
CONVNUM=14
CONV1="MS Word" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WRD.DLL ^.DOC
CONV2="Windows Write" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WRI.DLL ^.WRI
CONV3="MS Works" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WWP.DLL ^.WPS
CONV4="DCA(RFT)" D:\WINWORD\CONV-DCA.DLL ^.RFT
CONV5="WordPerfect 5.0" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WP5.DLL ^.DOC
CONV6="WordPerfect 4.2" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WP.DLL ^.DOC
CONV7="WordPerfect 4.1" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WP.DLL ^.DOC
CONV8="MultiMate Adv II" D:\WINWORD\CONV-MM.DLL ^.DOC
CONV9="MultiMate Advantage" D:\WINWORD\CONV-MM.DLL ^.DOC
CONV10="MultiMate 3.3" D:\WINWORD\CONV-MM.DLL ^.DOC
CONV11="WordStar 4.0" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WS.DLL ^.DOC
CONV12="WordStar 3.45" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WS.DLL ^.DOC
CONV13="WordStar 3.3" D:\WINWORD\CONV-WS.DLL ^.DOC
CONV14="Mac Word" D:\WINWORD\CONV-MCW.DLL ^.MAC

Note: We highly recommend that you allow Word to add this
section automatically.

Installing the PCX Graphics Filter
----------------------------------

The PCX graphics filter, PCXIMP.FLT, supports Paintbrush files in the
PCX format. The files are imported to Word in black and white. Color
images are not supported with this version of the filter, but this
feature will be considered for a future release.

To install the PCX graphics filter, do the following:

1. Copy the PCXIMP.FLT file from C:\TEMPFILE to the WINWORD
directory. For example, if your WINWORD directory is located on
Drive C, type the following at the DOS prompt and press ENTER:

copy c:\tempfile\PCXIMP.FLT c:\winword

2. Edit the WIN.INI file and add the following line to the
[WWFilters] section:

PCX Filter=PCXIMP.FLT,PCX

3. Close Windows and restart Windows and Word for Windows. You can
now import black-and-white PCX files.

Installing HIMEM.SYS
--------------------

The HIMEM.SYS file on the enclosed disk is the most recent version of
the XMS driver. Replace the old copy of HIMEM.SYS with the new version
by doing the following:

Note: If you have Windows version 3.00, you have the latest
XMS driver and can skip this procedure.

1. Copy the new HIMEM.SYS from C:\TEMPFILE to the directory in which
the old HIMEM.SYS resides (usually the root directory). For
example, type the following at the DOS prompt and press ENTER:

copy c:\tempfile\himem.sys c:\

However, HIMEM.SYS could also be in the WINDOWS or WINWORD
directory.

2. Reboot your computer for the new version of HIMEM.SYS to be
functional.
