- stack overfCreating a database consists of defining the fields that
you want in the database and assigning the database a
name.

Usage:

There are 4 options for field definition:

1. Field Name: This is the name of the field and may be
up to 10 characters long.

Note: In order to make full use of a memo field,
make sure that the field name for the memo field is 9
characters or less.

2. Field Type: There are 5 options for field types:
C = character-based field
N = numeric field
D = date field
L = logical field (Y or N, T or F)
M = memo or full text field

When you designate a field type for a new field, a
default field length will be placed in the field length
column. This default field length may be changed as
defined below to suit your need for the field length.

3. Field Length: This designates the length of the
field. Lengths for fields may be defined as follows:

Character fields: up to 255 characters
Numeric fields: up to 19 places including the
decimal point.
Date fields: 8 characters (fixed length)
Logical fields: 1 character (fixed length)
Memo fields: 10 characters (fixed length)

4. Demicals: If the field type is defined as numeric,
you may specify the number of decimal places the field is
to maintain. Remember, a numeric field may be up to 19
places including the decimal point.

To save the new database structure, press [F10] and enter

R600This option opens up a database structure for modi-

Usage:

There are 4 options for field definition.

1. Field Name: In this version of db-Express, you may not
change a field name after the database has been created
This would result in lose of data for that field. If you
must change a field name, delete the field, and add
another field with the name and definition that you want.
But, remember, deleting a field will cause all the data
for that field to be lost.

2. Field Type. Field types can be changed only if the
database being modified does not contain data. See the
manual for instructions on changing field types.

3. Field Length. This designates the length of the
field and depending on the field type, may be defined as
follows:

Character fields: up to 255 characters
Numeric fields: up to 19 places including
decimal point.
Date fields: 8 characters
Logical fields: 1 character
Memo fields: 10 characters

4. Field Decimals. If the field type is numeric, you
may specify the number of decimal places the field is to
maintain.

Field Groups

1. Report Column Definition.

Column Heading: The column heading allows for four lines
of text to be displayed above the column.

Contents: Enter the field for the column. Use the real
field name (not the label). Press [F9] for a list of
field names and their lengths.

Note: If the specified print field is a memo type
field, for the field to print properly, enclose the
field name with MEMOTRAN(), e.g. MEMOTRAN(COMMENTS)

Print field width: Enter the width of the column (in
number of characters). If the width specified for the
column is less than the actual field width, the field
will wrap onto the next line.

Print decimal places: If the field for the column is a
numeric field, enter the number of decimal places to be
printed for that field.

Totals for this field: If the field is a numeric field,
a subtotal for the column can be printed at the bottom of
the column on each page of the report with a final total
on the last page.

2. Report Form Layout

The Report Form Layout option defines how the page layout
of the report will look. The options should be self-
explanatory.

3. Field Groups

Field groups allow you to sort a field (place all records
for a common field value together). For example, if you
were defining a report in which the database had the
fields "State" and "Senator," you could define the field
"State" as a Group. This way, each unique state value
would print as a sub-column header with the records
matching the state value printing immediately after it.

Note: For the Field Groups option to work correctly, the

Default Database: If you enter an existing database

Memory Options: db-Express can use Extended or Expanded
memory for disk swapping and index caching. You may

Links are a way of establishing a relation to another
database "on the fly." A link is literally a match on
the same field name and field value in another database.

To establish a link to another database from the current
field, enter Full Screen ("Edit") mode and press [ALT]+L.

Note: A link cannot be established if a field filter is
active.

If you have already established which database to
link to (see: Topic "Set Links"), a link will be
established automatically. If not, you will be asked
to which database you wish to link.

Next, you will then be asked if you want to add or view
links:

Adding a Link: This option will append a new record to
the linked-to database and will place the value from the
original field in the new record, thus establishing a
link. Complete the new record as desired.

If you wish to add another link to the linked-to file,
press [PgDn] on the last screen of the record. You will
be asked if you want to add another.

Viewing a Link: This option finds all matches in the
linked to database and displays then in an overlapping
Browse Window. Pressing [ALT]+E on a record in the
window will open that record in Full Screen (Edit) mode.

NOTE: Once you exit from a link to a second database, you
will be returned to the Main Menu.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
