TFE version history

Note that many of the changes listed here are due to users' input. TFE
was originally written to meet my needs; it has grown as others have
told me what they need from TFE. If you have a suggestion, please let
me know.

Changes in version 2.21 (4/29/91)
- Added translation of Procomm+ 2.0 dialing directories.
- Added support for new ANSI terminal emulation.
- Corrected handling of TELIX environment variable -- now works when
variable contains only a drive, no directory.
- Now displaying entire name of terminal emulation, rather than just
the letter. This is how Telix does it as well, and I can't recall
why I ever did it the other way.

Changes in version 2.20 (7/22/90)
- Added ability to mark/unmark entries. Ctrl-M marks or unmarks the
current entry. Ctrl-K and Ctrl-U mark or unmark ranges. The fol-
lowing commands work on marked entries (you can still specify a
range if none are marked): Block, Copy, Delete, Export, Move and
Print.
- Added ability to translate Procomm 2.4.x, Procomm+, Qmodem 4.x,
Telemate 2.x, GT Power 15.50, Boyan D-3, Boyan 4.x and Commo 4.x
dialing directories to Telix format.
- Added context-sensitive help.
- Added support for EGA & VGA 43- and 50-line modes.
- Print command is greatly enhanced -- you can select which fields to
print (default is those onscreen, like before), including TFE data
fields).
- Added support for alternate date formats (DDMMYY and YYMMDD). We
use the format specified in TELIX.CNF, and if a date looks invalid
when reading a file, we first try to convert it from another format
before declaring it bad.
- When possible, Delete Duplicates (F3) now "merges" the TFE data of
duplicate entries.
- When doing Block changes, the "replace-with" string defaults to the
value of the current field.
- Added ability to use F1 for script fields.
- Added support for Mark and Space parity.
- No longer forcing blank "Last Call" entries to 01/01/80.
- Fixed Search-and-Replace bug -- it was ignoring the last entry.
- Fixed bug when attempting to read a FON file with an invalid header;
results were weird at best, system-hanging at worst. Now we just
stop trying to read the file, which is what was supposed to happen
all along.
- When done Recording or Playing Back macros, the portion of the bor-
der replaced by the "Recording" or "Playing Back" messages is now
restored in the proper color.

Changes in version 2.10 (1/17/90)

- If no FON files are found in the current directory, TFE looks in the
TELIX directory (if we're not already there).
- Find (Alt-F) function now looks through ALL fields (including TFE
data), and goes to the appropriate field when found.
- 19200 baud was being displayed as 9200. A typo which did NOT affect
FON file data, just got displayed wrong.
- Added Search-And-Replace.

Changes in version 2.00 (9/2/89)
- Completely rewritten, and while I was at it (in no particular
order):
- Added display of current file name.
- Added "TFE Data" editing (F2) (extra info such as sysop name, BBS
hours, etc.). This stuff can be nice, but it REQUIRES that all
Insertion and Deletion of entries be done through TFE.
- Can now Sort in ascending or descending order on ANY field, includ-
ing TFE Data as a whole.
- Added macro record/playback.
- Print routine now places page feeds more intelligently.
- TFE now searches for the Configuration file in the current direc-
tory, PATH directories, and in the TELIX environment variable direc-
tory (unless an explicit path is given).
- Added -c command-line option to specify configuration file name.
- Added -v option to override video access method -- 1 = Direct
writes, no snow checking; 2 = Direct writes w/checking; 3 = BIOS
screen writes.
- Screen rewrites are more intelligent; less flicker involved.
- Added Insert/Overwrite mode indicator -- no longer reset to Insert
whenever we hit a new field.
- TFE now correctly handles filenames whose paths include periods
(e.g. ..\telix.fon).
- TFE deals with the last-call date now. It didn't before, so the
first time TFE is used on a file, a lot of entries may be 'cleaned-
up' if they don't contain valid dates. Nothing to worry about.
- When Exporting data, you can now append to OR overwrite existing
files.
- Added ability to merge entries with duplicate names and numbers
(F3).
- Find (Alt-F) now starts its search following the current entry,
rather than from the top each time.
- A bit more intelligent about detecting when a file has been changed.
- Now displaying usage message when ?, -h or any invalid parameter is
entered at the command line.
- Can now Copy, Move, Add or Insert entries to the END of the direc-
tory. That is, when specifying the destination of a Copy, Move,
Add, or Insert, you can point past the current end of the directory.
- Print now prints the fields currently shown on the screen; no lon-
ger always prints the first several fields.

Changes in version 1.10 (12/31/88)
- Added ability to sort indicated ranges only.
- Can now sort by phone number as well as name.

- TFE can now create new FON files.
- Fixed various bugs involving insufficient validity-checking of
fields.
- Now fairly intelligent about asking for confirmation when reading a
new file or exiting, if the current file has been changed but not
saved.
- Now handles wildcards at all Read File prompts (and the command
line); if no name is specified, TFE will present a menu of all FON
files in the current directory (if only one is present, it is simply
loaded without fanfare).
- Introduced bold new policy of having other people beta-test new TFE
versions BEFORE inflicting them on the general public.
- Screen updates are a bit more intelligent when indicating ranges.
Those using BIOS-video, in particular, should appreciate the differ-
ence.
- Data-handling is much more bulletproof now. TFE can intelligently
handle invalid data (finally), replacing them with default values,
notifying the user, and considering the file to be changed (so the
user it prompted to write the file when exiting). This has been
tested on all-0, all-FFh, and random-data files.

- Fixed bug when TAB-ing or shift-TAB-ing past the beginning or end of
the screen.
- Got rid of infinite loop when sorting and two entries had identical
names AND phone numbers.
- Various editing-key changes.
- Changed default protocol to Zmodem.
- Can now select field-menu options by hitting highlighted letter.
- Added on-screen entry numbers.
- Added Find function (Alt-F).
- Added Help screen (Alt-H, Alt-Z).
- Changed impOrt (Alt-O) and Insert (Alt-I) to Import (Alt-I) and Add
(Alt-A).
- Changed Read (Alt-R) to Load (Alt-L).
- Added Block Change (Alt-B).

Changes in version 1.01 (11/29/88)
- Fixed bug in initialization of video routines when no TELIX.CNF
present.
- Fixed bug in bios-level screen i/o.

Changes in version 1.0 (11/22/88)
- Initial release.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
